des is a fur trader and interpreter for the (once again fictional) st. louis fur company. she knows multiple languages (french, english, omaha, ponca, plains sign language, and more) and is also kind of a natural diplomat. she works with atwood a lot and works in the same areas. they’re close friends who share a brain cell.

also recruited to escort emmett to a remote montana fort in 1816. absolutely nothing goes wrong.

emmett my beloved!

emmett is kind of a socialite and a law student. he is passionate, bold, and emotional, and finds himself speaking about social justice of the time. almost all of his views are in opposition to his democratic-republican father, who very much cares about his reputation and running for re-election (or higher positions like the eventual presidency). emmett is personable and trying his best, really. poor man doesn’t know a thing about the outdoors when he’s sent to montana.

in 1815 or 1816, his dad discovers him in bed with another man (after already hating his guts), and when he confronts emmett, also threatening the man he was with, emmett responds with damaging social information about his father as well (his other, favorite son is a bastard). scared for his reputation, the big proponent for westward expansion sends emmett to a fort out west as a pr move. this little mission is lead by atwood and des. senator bailey intends for an unfortunate “accident” to befall emmett on the way, of course

the man of the hour, atwood. just posting some current art which is all refs

atwood’s a fur trader/trapper that works for the (fictional) st. louis fur company. he generally travels along the missouri and northern mississippi rivers and has a knack for his work, and also is rather independent. he isn’t actually some language genius, he just knows enough french + various native american languages to get by as a trader

in 1816, atwood is eventually tasked with taking a senator’s son to a fort in modern day montana... surely nothing ever goes wrong when politicians are involved!
