Homeward (Steve Minecraft x Reader)
Part 1
I stared wide-eyed at the glassy black structure in front of me. The obsidian stone reflected the square sun's light as Steve approached it carefully. With one last awe-inspiring look, he reached for the base of his edifice.
"Flint and Steel." He announced silently, looking back at me with a soft smirk before striking the bottom two obsidian stones at his feet. As soon as a fire was lit, a shimmering purple glow emitted from what was now undoubtedly a portal.
My eyes widened. I was shocked that the stories were true, and unbeleiveing in what my own eyes proved to me. I could do nothing but watch as your companion disappeared beyond the violet.
And I promplty followed him.
I'm not sure what compelled me to, in all actuality. Maybe it was because I knew it was what needed to be done, or maybe it was because I felt a magnetism to him that made it so I couldn't stand to be away from him for more tha a minute. No matter the caues, I was being transported at once to a realm beyond anything I had ever known.
The light before my eyes distorted, shattered and unfamiliar. I felt as if the thread of my body was being unwound, but I was in one piece still when I made it to the other side. There I then stood, facing a world of crimson rock and gnarly, twisted trees.
"W...Where are we?" I stuttered, terrified and amazed all at once.
He turned to me and met my eyes with his. My throat grew dryer the longer I awaited a response from him.
With a deep, wistful inhale, he spoke.
"The Nether."
A chill rolled up my spine and sweat dripped slowly down my forehead. The blistering heat was almost too much for me to bear, but Steve seemed accustomed to it.
His face didn't glisten, and his voice didn't shake. He held his sword of diamonds with a tight fist and outstretched his opposite hand to guide me. My hand slid into his as if there was nowhere else it would better fit.
With his fingers wrapped now around mine, he led me forward between the knotted trees of magenta and teal. Mushrooms around us hummed softly, emitting a faint but ever-present glow to help us see where our feet were stepping. It seemed to me that Steve knew where he was leading me, like he had the place mapped out in his mind. I couldn't help but wonder just how many hours he had spent there.
Just as I opened my mouth to ask, my question was stopped short by a blood curdling wail. My heart nearly stopped, and my stomach fell to my feet. I turned in the direction of the hellish sound and saw something unimginably frightening. In front of me, or above me, rather, was a disgustingly pale mass of scorched flesh and reddened eyes. The ghastly creature hovered aimlessly above us, screeching in what could only be aguish.
"Get behind me, now!" Steve's voice rang between my ears. I did what he said without question, instinctively following his command. I leapt into the safety that his large, muscular frame could provide for me while he widened his stance. He stared at the beast with domineering eyes, pointing his blade in it's direction.
With a bellowing howl, the creature spat a ball of pure fire in our direction. It barreled towards us at a petrifying speed. I trembled behind him, my fingers digging into his bicep. I had to trust him completley, but I was far too weak to fight the fear overtaking my body.
There was no fear in Steve's posture, though. He hadn't shed a tear, or screamed, or trembled, or even tensed his jaw. He watched the flames coming closer and closer to us without so much as a muscle twitch.
My eyes snapped shut in terror, and a loud smack echoed between the rock walls around us. Steve had moved swiftly, and before I could even recognize what happened the flames were shooting in the direction opposite to us.
Steve's chest heaved, and he held his sword firmly in both hands like it was a baseball bat. Only then did I even see a drop of sweat rolling off of his forehead.
In an instant, the creature was felled and collapsed into a lava pool. My heart beat out of my chest, and Steve wrapped a reassuring arm around my shoulders.
"All good?" His tone was nonchalant, like we hadn't just been faced with what could have very easily been our demise.
"I...I think so."
