I just realized that in that so‑called “official commission” artwork Rhaelya fans love to flaunt, there’s a Martell sigil right there in the Summerhall scene. Think about it: Daeron II built Summerhall to commemorate the union of two houses and the peace of the Seven Kingdoms, yet Rhaegar abandoned his Martell wife Elia, plunged Westeros into chaos, and played his wretched harp with his mistress in Summerhall, right under the Martell sigil. Thick‑skinned as the Wall. This honestly cracked me up.
Daeron II is Rhaegar’s parallel in every respect — as a mother’s son, a king’s heir, and a wife’s husband, Daeron II truly lived up to each role. Rhaegar, born in a place that symbolized peace, brought nothing but destruction, destroying that very union and shattering that very peace. The things others had worked so hard to build, Rhaegar smashed one by one.

Since we're lamenting over the HBO adaptation, I'm curious, if you were to write and direct an adaptation of Fire & Blood, are there things you would change from canon? Things you would skip, things you would develop more, etc. And what would absolutely not skip, what essential points of the story would you make sure to adapt?
Yeah, if I were adapting Fire & Blood, I wouldn't bastardize the tone or sanitize the material like HBO did with House of the Dragon. I’d lean hard into the political rot and dynastic decay that defines the Targaryen downfall. That means no aging down Alicent to make her more “sympathetic,” no rebranding Criston Cole as some emotionally stunted incel with a sword. Cole stays competent, cold-blooded, a knight who climbs and burns everything behind him with eyes wide open. A political animal, not a lovesick fool.
Alicent would stay her actual age and become what she is in the book—a calculating, deeply political woman shaped by survival and the cutthroat culture of court, not some martyr to be humiliated for Tumblr edits. She’s dangerous because she knows how to play the game, not because the writers say so in behind-the-scenes interviews.
Viserys? Absolutely not that rotting Disney dad archetype they turned him into. He’s vain, weak, indecisive—but not some passive saint who dies whispering dream mumbo-jumbo. He chooses inaction, and the realm burns for it. That’s the tragedy. Strip him of the body horror nonsense and give him the rot of a king too afraid to wield his power.
Daemon wouldn’t be hallucinating dead wives or becoming a cryptid lurking in Harrenhal’s rafters. He’d stay what he is—a violent, brilliant, impulsive chaos engine who plays the long game when it suits him and kills when it doesn't. Rhaenyra would evolve correctly—not the sanitized feminist HBO tried to write, but the paranoid, entitled, increasingly unhinged claimant who ends up feeding her enemies to dragons and ruling through fear. She does war crimes. That’s character. I wouldn’t write that out to protect audience empathy.
And yes—she and Daemon kill Laenor. None of this faked-his-death cowardly garbage. Laenor dies, and it’s ugly. Daemon makes sure of it, because Targaryens don’t do clean breakups. Laena and Corlys would get the expanded roles they deserve—Laena especially, as a political match for Daemon who burns too bright and dies too soon. Give her fire, not just a dragon and a death scene.
Aemond stays a ruthless little freak, shaped by violence, humiliation, and a desperate need to prove himself. He doesn’t “accidentally” kill anyone. He makes war, he maims children, he rides the biggest dragon alive because he wants to. The Blood and Cheese incident? Uncut. Brutal. Children die. The Greens unleash horror, and the Blacks respond in kind. That’s the fucking point of the Dance.
I wouldn’t write anyone out. No whitewashing. No moral binaries. Everyone is awful in their own specific, dynastically cursed way. That’s what makes it compelling. This isn’t a fairytale—it’s a rotting Targaryen dynasty eating itself from the inside. That’s what I’d adapt. And I’d make it hurt.
