Abhaya Libre Update

Abhaya Libre is under heavy development. Now we are in the stage of finalising the weights and looking at interpolated in between weights.

Abhaya Libre Font - Update

Sol sent some latin samples that she thought that matches both Sinhala and Tamil. We can not publish the files because some of the fonts we were looking at are proprietary fonts. But this exercise  helped us to understand the task at hand better and to understand characteristic that made Abaya distinct.

අභය ලිබ්රේ නමින් FM අභය ෆොන්ට් එක නිදහස් කිරීමට අපි දැන් සූදානම්. පුෂ්පානන්ද ඒකනායක මහතාගේ නිර්මාණයක් වන අභය මුලින්ම 1999 වසරේ එළිදැක්වුණු අතර එය බොහෝදෙනෙක් නොමිලේ භාවිත කරනවා. ලෝකයේ වැඩිම පාවිච්චි වෙන සිංහල ෆොන්ට් එක අභය බව අපේ අදහසයි. Google Fonts වල සහය සමග පුෂ්පනද ඒකනායක මහතා දැන් mooniak සමග එක්ව මේ අභය අක්ෂර රටාව යුනිකෝඩ් වෙබ් ෆොන්ට් එකක් ලෙස නිදහස් කරන්නටයි සූදානම්.

මේ ෆොන්ට් එක සිංහල දෙමල සහ ලතින් අක්ෂර මාලාවන් අන්තර්ගත එකක් වනු ඇති. දෙමල අක්ෂර දැනට ඉන්දියානු සමාගමක පැරණි ෆොන්ට් එකක් ආශ්‍රයෙන් නිමවෙන අතර ලතින් අක්ෂර බර්ලින් හි සොල් මාටස් විසින් නිමකරන්නට නියමිතයි. ජාත්‍යන්තරව පිළිගත් සම්මතයන්ට අනුව නිමවන මෙම ෆොන්ට් එක පිලිබදව මූලික සාකච්චාවක් මේ...

We did our first discussion and review about Abhaya Libre project a few days ago and here is the video. Designers Sol Matas, Pushpananda Ekanayake and Pathum Egodawatta discussed the status of the development and took some major decisions regarding the direction of the design.

Ayanna Narrow - Update 1

The font family Ayanna Narrow is under development with financial support from Google. This family will support Sinhala+Tamil+Latin. The Current state is as follows.

The main focus of this font is to develop a clean narrow family intended to take less horizontal space. With the lack of fonts for web we expect this could be coupled with Malithi Web and upcoming Ahhaya Libre font as a title/headline font.

Abhaya Libre Font

Abhaya Libre is the third font project mooniak has started with support form Google Fonts. FM Abhaya by Pushpananda Ekanayake is under refactoring process with support from Google Fonts and will be released under name Abhaya Libre. The font outlines are being improved and there are slight changes in design. Mr Ekanayake is working with us in this project and Sol Matas, an award winning type designer based in Berlin, is working on the Latin. It has been a pleaser and a amazing learning experience for us. We are excited to bring the most used Sinhala font on earth to its new life as a Web font. 

A new extra bold weight is under development and and the there will be qa total of 6 weights. We could expect Abhaya Libre to be available on Google Fonts by late September this year.(Not official)

Concept Note : Aaradhana

We had a preliminary discussion about the video for Aardhana son by Umanga and Kumma. After failed attempt to do an animated video we realised we had to try a simple fast structure if we are to make a video. So first brainstorming sessions was a success.

Animger : A Tool to animate design project development

Its been few months since we atarted Animager project and we didn’t write anything so far. Animager is a tool to animate any design project. The idea came since we started using Sparkleshare.  Sparkleshare is this wonderful Libre tool that makes using git as a collaboration and backup for designers a breeze. Once configured it commits files whenever you make changes and save them. 

Since Git repo has all the different versions that was saved as diffs we thought we could do a nice video of the process if we can extract the versions. So we made it. Lahiru and Pathum worked on this project here on this GitHub repo. 

So this is the outcome

This video is made entirely with just Inkscape and Animager scripts to animate. 

This is the Hangout session we did to review the development and plan the next steps. (Its in Sinhala)

UPDATE: SNB Sinhala

We are starting to expand STICK NO BILLS into a multilingual family first we will work on adding Sinhala glyph set. There is no stencil font for SInhala and we hope this will fill the gap. The only benchmark is the not so good stencil type on railway stations and buses. But they have gone crazy with the stencil adding cuts in all the different places.

UPDATE: SNB Font Italics

So we are starting the development of Italic version of STICK NO BILLS Font. This image shows a automatically slanted version using FontForge’s tools for creating styles. We think the the outcome is ok.. but there are many places that should be fixed.

STICK NO BILLS™ Font v001 is Out

After lots of different iterations the v001 of Stick No Bills font is out. Check it out. A big thanks to Meg and STICK NO BILLS™ for hiring us for the project and agreeing to go open source and make font available under OFL. You can use it, improve it or modify it as you wish.

Most of the work was done by Kosala. We plan on adding more glyphs covering Latin 1 in coming weeks. This is our first full Font project. All the files are on GitHub repo for reference and improvements. Please file issues if you see any bugs.

We did a new project page too :)
