i cannot stop shaking, i watched Kpop Demon Hunters yesterday and since then i've watched Kpop Demon Hunters five times (no joke) and yet i cannot get this out of my system. i fear that the only thing that will clench my thrist is a second movie with jinu alive :))))

listen, no one cares but to me? the most interesting thing about sam, the thing that explains why sam is captain america, and why walker never could be, is that sam turned violence and suffering into goodness. (and i talk about 616 here cause this is also why sam is my favorite character) (i’m sorry for how long this is 😭)

sam’s story in the comics? is surrounded by violence. it’s tragic. his home was his safe place and it was taken from him when he was a child. he witnessed his father murder at nine. then he & sarah witnessed his mother’s murder later. in an old comic, sarah tells leila that sam didn’t cry at his father funeral because he wanted to be brave for sarah and darlene, but after his mother died, after she was killed in front of him and sarah, he didn’t see a reason to be brave anymore and he cried for DAYS. and i mean, to see that at all, no matter the age, fucks with your head, but to see all this before eighteen? it ruins you.

in the mcu? lost his parents, and we don’t even know HOW. he never talks about it. neither does sarah. then he saw his best friend being killed in front of him, blow to pieces in the sky. after that he lived, as far as we know, a lonely life. a life full of grief and guilt and regret. sam could be an anti-hero if we look at his background, he could easily become walker. he could easily be angry at the world and go out and kill everybody he thought deserved it, he could make justice with his own hands, to kill everybody like the men that killed his parents and destroyed his family, his childhood— so many characters of marvel that we like and care about do that, started like that: knowing violence as a child, how unfair and horrible is the world, how nobody is there when you need, how the people in power not only do not care but are the hands that perpetuate this violence. and sam has reasons, strength and resources, to become like them. but sam chose something different. he chose something that demanded more of him than anger. remember that thing toni morrison said about evil being boring? that we all can think of different ways of killing someone, that even a child can do that? about how goodness is more difficult, more demanding, more interesting? that being good is an adult thing because it has to involve a choice to do so? that is sam.

sam chose to become a social worker and help his community in a way that no symbol, no shield, no hero suit, could. sam chose to give people second chances, to take care of them. to be of service when people needed him. he chose to be a consuelor and help people with their grief and guilt and regret, even when he was in pain himself. he chose to sacrifice his life to help steve take out hydra and he didn’t ask anything for it, not glory, not power, not money, not even gratitude. and i don’t think people realized that sam doesn’t do it because he is blind to the real world, or because he is an optimistic like karli called him. in fact sam could have and most of us in his place would have, told the world to go fuck itself. he lives in a world where he saves the damn universe from a mad titan but can’t get a loan to save his family business, a world where the police treats him, a hero, like shit, then ask, politely, a known assassin to get in their car. a world where he gives something meaningful, something his best friend gave him, to a museum as a gift, and the government betrays him and gives the shield to the first blond white man they could find. the world was never kind to sam. it was never good to him. it isn’t still. but sam is not an idiot neither is he some happy, positivity poster boy that serves to cheer up other characters. sam just found in himself and chose to take this abundance of violence, this mistreatment, this hate, and turn into something else. simply because he can’t see the world as it is and do nothing about it. some people can. some people can accept the world is broken and move on with their lives. but sam just can’t.

and god that’s why i loved sam from the first comic i read. from the first movie. yes he is charismatic and funny, a great fighter, a great friend but what makes sam unique is this: he tries so hard to fix things, to be what everyone needs and sometimes he fails, and he goes and tries again, even when is too much for him. he keeps trying because this is just who he is. walker could never do that, walker would always chose the easier route, to kill, to hate, to spite, to seek glory, power, status, and that is why so many men relate to walker and not to sam. they are walker. being walker is easy. being sam demands something, giving part of himself for something that might not benefit you in the end. (like god, when sam left the shield in the comics for the first time? he was tired, people took everything they could from him. hated him like he was not even a person, he had no rewards) but guess what, to be captain america you have to be like sam, you have to be like steve.

you give the shield to men like walker and you watch as he uses it to slaughter a man’s throat in a fit of range. but you give that same shield to sam and that man STOPS A WAR. walker could never be captain america, not because he lacks physical strength or abilities, but because he doesn’t have the heart it requires.

the fantastic four meeting the thunderbolts first makes perfect sense.

hear me out, the four are the “perfect” superhero team. where they come from, they’re beloved heroes and celebrities. the public adores them because they’re the superheroes people need.

on the other hand, the thunderbolts are a corporate superhero team who didn’t want to be superheroes. the public is rejecting them because they’re the superheroes nobody asked for.

but they have one thing in common: they’re family. while the teams couldn’t be more different, they’re still families that would do anything for one another.
