hot artists don't gatekeep
I've been resource gathering for YEARS so now I am going to share my dragons hoard
Floorplanner. Design and furnish a house for you to use for having a consistent background in your comic or anything! Free, you need an account, easy to use, and you can save multiple houses.
Comparing Heights. Input the heights of characters to see what the different is between them. Great for keeping consistency. Free.
Magma. Draw online with friends in real time. Great for practice or hanging out. Free, paid plan available, account preferred.
Smithsonian Open Access. Loads of free images. Free.
SketchDaily. Lots of pose references, massive library, is set on a timer so you can practice quick figure drawing. Free.
SculptGL. A sculpting tool which I am yet to master, but you should be able to make whatever 3d object you like with it. free.
Pexels. Free stock images. And the search engine is actually pretty good at pulling up what you want.
Figurosity. Great pose references, diverse body types, lots of "how to draw" videos directly on the site, the models are 3d and you can rotate the angle, but you can't make custom poses or edit body proportions. Free, account option, paid plans available.
Line of Action. More drawing references, this one also has a focus on expressions, hands/feet, animals, landscapes. Free.
Animal Photo. You pose a 3d skull model and select an animal species, and they give you a bunch of photo references for that animal at that angle. Super handy. Free.
Height Weight Chart. You ever see an OC listed as having a certain weight but then they look Wildly different than the number suggests? Well here's a site to avoid that! It shows real people at different weights and heights to give you a better idea of what these abstract numbers all look like. Free to use.

If we wanna read your writings, what tags do you use for those? Do you have an AO3? What about original works?
I use the tag ‘baps writes sometimes’ there’s not a lot on there, just some older oneshots, nothing more. Though some of those oneshots will link to my AO3 which is ‘CourtyardJester’ truth be told, I haven’t posted anything on there in a while given I’ve been hella busy just trying to keep my head above the water that is medical debt.
However, if you want to read my original works, I’ll be posting that sort of stuff on my side blog SoupyBones! I’ll be posting previews of my original works over there under the name M.K. Winters along with links to the published works when they come out.
I’ll also be posting artwork of characters and places as I finish them so please follow that blog if you want to read any of my original work!

If you could convince people to read the first book of the Septimus Heap series - without spoiling the book - by telling them about one thing in it, what would it be?
Other than the world building and lore dumps you get just about every other paragraph? I’d have to say that reading about the existential identity crisis of a millipede is probably up there in the top 3 funniest things I’ve read in a published novel.
By far.

They talk about guns in the first four chapters of the first book and I know they’re used spatially throughout the series. I’d need to find where they’re described, but I know they lean towards flintlock pistols or muskets that are magically modified to reload by themselves (again, this is all from memory, I just remember that the Contemporary Guard hate magyk and anyone who practices it unless it benefits them) rather than 10mm and AK-47s.
Rereading the Septimus Heap series after all these years and comparing it to the other Magic based book series that came out a few years earlier… how the hell did it NOT become widely popular?
You got:
A ‘lost’ princess
A magical boy of prophecy
The best friend trope of the two who is crushing hard on the princess and it’s a childhood friends-to-lovers slow burn
One-sided gay crush sub-plot with boy of prophecy
A supposed crazy lady who lives in the woods, but she’s actually pretty chill
As you read, you learn about the lives of each character you meet, lore about the locations visited, and grow attached to it all as time goes on. You actually can envision what’s happening with how detailed things can get.
The author is pro-LGBTQIA+/trans rights
There’s small illustrations at the start of each chapter and they’re so beautiful
The book cover artwork?? Hello?!
Guns.
Like… bruh, the first book came out in the early 2000s, and Tumblr has YET to find it?! Y’all were asking for recs when JKKK Rowling outed herself and NO ONE talked about this book series!
It’s time to talk about this book series! Read them!!!!! I promise they are infinitely better than the Harry Potter series.

The only thing being talked about right now (because I actually read the spotlight) is the fact that the majority of reported works are being reported as ‘Non-fanworks’ a good portion of them aren’t, but some of them are.
Fanworks include:
fanfiction, fanart, podfics, fanvids, fancrafts, fannish non-fiction, original works, and more
Original works like free novels of OC content have been known to have been reported as non-fanworks when it does count as fanwork!!
People posting their comics and artwork on AO3 is considered fanwork!
What isn’t considered fanwork (and should 100% be reported as non-fanwork) are the following:
Fic searches or requests for recommendations
Advertisements for roleplay partners or servers
Personal messages to other users
Updates, polls, or announcements
Reaction, blog, or vent posts
Spam, shitposts, or memes
Reposted novels or other published works
Placeholders and other empty works
Links to or lists of works you've read or created
Ideas or prompts for fanworks
Requests for other users to provide you with ideas or prompts for fanworks
The spotlight makes it very, VERY clear that AO3 is NOT and has never been a social media site, so don’t treat it as such. It’s an archive site. It even offers easy to follow solutions to where you can go to do all those non-fanwork behaviors that don’t involve posting on AO3.
It also lays out how to correctly submit a report of a non-fanwork and their process of reviewing reports. All they ask is that you keep your email up-to-date so that you aren’t surprised if you one day can’t log into your AO3 due to actually being terminated because they want you to be able to post your fan content WHEN YOU HAVE FAN CONTENT TO POST!!!
That being said here’s some advice:
Best thing to do rn in order to stop these bots is private your fics. Aka make it so only those logged into AO3 can read and comment on your works. Don’t delete your works. If you’re going to delete it off AO3, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD POST IT SOMEWHERE ELSE SO IT CANT BE STOLEN!! BECAUSE IT WILL BE STOLEN AND SOLD WITHOUT YOUR CONSENT BY FANFIC SELLERS IF IT GETS POPULAR ENOUGH!!
Despite what people say, if you can prove you wrote it, you can send a C&D to a fanfic seller because you can prove you wrote the fanfic. You don’t have to own the OG copyright of the work you made the fanfic/fanwork of to send a C&D to someone selling YOUR fanwork YOU spent time on. You own that copyright to your own fanwork!!
Wow, now there's a bot going around on Ao3 telling people that the "moderators" will delete works from "deprecated" fandoms and impose bans.
Fearmongering bullshit, but it's fearmongering bullshit that seems to be taking advantage of the recent spotlight series in order to trick authors into deleting their fics.
Just. Why.
What the hell does anyone get out of making these bots.

If you're in the US military or National Guard, and are given an illegal or unconstitutional order, the GI Rights hotline (1-877-447-4487) is there to help give you the support you need to do the right thing by refusing it. It would be good to think about this now before it becomes a live issue for you and it would be smart of you to memorize that number.
