Someone from a comment section on Instagram: I’m bisexual. I can’t be biphobic.
Also them: you’re not bisexual if you’ve never had sex with a woman but only a man.
Many lgbt teenagers and young adults growing up on the internet today have socially conservative beliefs that they voice at all times that they got from their conservative parents which they’ve never challenged because they think the life experience of being gay or trans makes them politically progressive
The way if you even mention you think Tom can act, it’s an instant belittlement of you supposedly “fancying him” so your “judgement is clouded” like I’m a lesbian luv.
honestly, the hate people send to tom holland on film twitter is so uncalled for, he's a great and successful actor and i am sad that it's seen as a bad thing to have a positive opinion of him lately
Okay this is one of the few times I am going to fall into my total movie geek zone so if you follow me for my other content feel free to ignore this:
I am seeing a lot of people compare Tom Holland’s performance in “Cherry” to Leo DiCaprio’s performance in “The Basketball Diaries” which actually doesn’t surprise me at all.
The Basketball Diaries was received by critics in a very similar way that Cherry seems to be. They love the actors portrayal and performance but they hate the stylistic and directorial approach the Russos chose to take. However, the initial criticism for Cherry seems much more hostile then it was for The Basketball Diaries.
In many ways these two movies are the same. Both are based on semi-autobiographical novels (though the novel Cherry is more of a fictionalized account of Nicos life) both follow the story of young men who fall into drug addiction, and both are independent films staring popular, talented actors wanting to show their true potential.
I have read the novel that Cherry is based on and I can say that just as the reviews for film say it was uncomfortable to watch at times, it is also very uncomfortable to read due to how unemotional he is in recounting these events which indicates to me that the film at least in some way did its job in being unapologetic and straight forward about this persons life and the events that took place.
I have not seen the film yet and probably won’t until it is available to stream due to the pandemic. However if Tom’s performance in Cherry is anywhere close to Leo’s in The Basketball Diaries I am sure I will at least enjoy that aspect of this film which in many ways I think that is really what should matter at the end of the day.
Don’t let your dislike for the choices made by the directors overshadow a potentially outstanding performance by someone who has already proven he is much more then just a cute guy in a Spider-Man suit .
the article ‘the bowl, the ram, and the folded map: navigating the complicated world’ by the blogger elodieunderglass is so beautiful, oh my goodness. you all. i loved it so much. read it here.
“I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where. I love you simply, without problems or pride: I love you in this way because I do not know any other way of loving but this, in which there is no I or you, so intimate that your hand upon my chest is my hand, so intimate that when I fall asleep your eyes close.”
