Random Acts of Kindness Day
Have you ever experienced something rude? I bet pretty much all of us have. We’ve experienced being shoved in a store without an apology, having someone cut in front of us in line, or even being cut-off on the road while we’re driving. It isn’t fun, and some bad thoughts can go through your mind when it happens.
Today is a day to forget those bad thoughts. It’s Random Acts of Kindness Day throughout the United States! So, here is a challenge. Forget about those rude people for the rest of this week – just completely forget about them. Show them kindness.
When you’re in line at a fast food place, buy the person’s lunch behind you – even if they’re a stranger. Purchase a cup of coffee for someone. Offer to give a neighbor a ride to the store. Spend some of your free time volunteering at one of the many organizations here in Santa Fe. Purchase some dog or cat food for the animal shelter. The list can go on and on. You’ll feel amazing, and you’ll know you did a great thing for someone who really appreciates it!

Help Others Throughout Santa Fe - Volunteer Opportunities
When we were young, we were always taught to share our toys, be kind to each other, and help others. Once you become an adult, that challenge seems to get harder and harder.
Throughout Santa Fe, there are a ton of volunteer opportunities – from assisting in local animal shelters to providing transportation to helping someone learn to read and write. Sometimes, the challenge is finding the time to commit to volunteering. If you have even just a little bit of time each week, you could make a huge difference and impact on someone else’s life.
Consider volunteering and devoting some of your time to some of the many organizations throughout Santa Fe. Some of our organizations which offer volunteer opportunities include:
ReadWest – ReadWest is an adult literacy program which services students from Rio Ranch to Albuquerque. Over 85% of the students are learning English as a second language. For information on their program, or to become a volunteer, visit their website.
ProjectShare – ProjectShare feeds the hungry and homeless of Albuquerque every night of the week (except for Wednesday nights) from 5:00 pm until 6:00 pm. They are always looking for helping hands and welcome volunteer opportunities. Visit their website for more information.
Santa Fe Botanical Garden – The Santa Fe Botanical Garden offers docent opportunities. For those who love plants, this is a great volunteer opportunity! You will provide tours, sell tickets, and help visitors with retail purchases. For more information call (505) 471-9103.

The History of Monopoly
A little bit of history for you – the board game, Monopoly, first hit the shelves of stores on February 6th, 1935. How long did it take to create this popular board game?
In 1903, Elizabeth Magie Phillips wanted to explain the concept of the concentrating land in private monopolies. She created a game called The Landlord’s Game, self-publishing that game in 1906. From 1906 to 1935, several different versions of Elizabeth’s game were created which involved buying, selling and developing land.
Parker Brothers created the Monopoly game which many of us know and enjoy playing today in 1935, giving several people throughout the East Coast and Midwestern U.S. the opportunity to submit ideas for the game. The first game format was based in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and has the popular Boardwalk and Park Place spaces, as well as multiple spaces named after Atlantic City streets.
As you play Monopoly with your family and friends, purchasing houses and hotels to place on your properties, you might consider selling your own home – or looking for a new one.
