   𝓘𝓽𝓼 𝓼𝓽𝓪𝓵𝓴 𝔀𝓪𝓼 𝓽𝓸𝓸 𝓵𝓸𝓷𝓰, and here there be thorns, dancing up its thin green neck. They scratched over her ear, nicking her temple. Her hands traveled with his, over the bloody petals and dancing with the thorns.

   𝓢𝓱𝓮 had to lock it in place, properly, herself. 𝓑𝓾𝓽 𝓽𝓱𝓪𝓽 𝔀𝓪𝓼 𝓯𝓲𝓷𝓮.

   𝓗𝓮𝓻 middle finger pressed against a red thorn, and she feels the skin break. Wetting the stalk, she keeps it there. Cozy and secure, her blood dribbles.

   𝓒𝓱𝓮𝓮𝓴𝓼 and lips and brow curve smoothly pale, like a pearl’s. May sees the preternatural shine of his eyes within the hollow blackness. It wasn’t his face, but May found it more familiar than any flesh and bone could ever comfort. Pure, homely porcelain.

   𝓑𝓾𝓽 he was weird. And May was very close friends with 𝔀𝓮𝓲𝓻𝓭𝓷𝓮𝓼𝓼. (Odd and strange were also good acquaintances.) But the relationship had been soured lately. It was all 𝓳𝓪𝓭𝓮 instead of rose-colored. However, that man was weird with the volume turned up. She couldn’t hear herself over him, his presence, the face with an affinity like Suzie’s. 

   𝓣𝓱𝓮 rose is pressed into scalp, burning the blood and thorns into her nerves. She remembers her life as a cautionary tale, but the rose seeded hesitant 𝓱𝓸𝓹𝓮.

   𝓜𝓪𝔂 smiled, quiet and shaky.

   “𝓣𝓱𝓪𝓷𝓴 𝔂𝓸𝓾.”

   𝓣𝓱𝓮𝓻𝓮 𝔀𝓮𝓻𝓮 𝓯𝓲𝓿𝓮 𝓸𝓷 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓻𝓲𝓷𝓰, and they never overlapped. Taking their own fair space: three women’s, two men’s. May could identify the cut as clean and open, done with a hand that, while not professional, was experienced. Experienced through time, and 𝓼𝓸 overjoyed in its lacerations.

   𝓢𝓱𝓮 nudged them with white crescent of her nail. Kenneth had declared them 𝓸𝓵𝓭, yet, there was no rot. May slid them about, respectfully, until she had parted a new opening between two of them. Then, the ring was turned, and she bowed her ring finger.   

   𝓣𝓱𝓮 gold bit into the flesh, pressed right under the root of her ring finger. In between cyan nail and layered rings, her own scar-tipped finger fell right into place. If only it wasn’t still connected.

   “𝓣𝓱𝓮𝔂'𝓻𝓮 great,” she croaked, “don’t look…don’t look a day over a 𝓭𝓪𝔂.”

   𝓗𝓮𝓻 head lifted to look at the clown. (She knew many a people who would’ve been scared. But he reminded her of her own porcelain clowns, and couldn’t find any fault with him.)

   𝓢𝓱𝓮 smiled, and it croaked too. The dim effluvium of the caravan suffocated the freedom of her expression. Her lazy eye wandered slightly to the left.

   “𝓗𝓸𝔀 do you do that? Amy is always…” her chest heaved, and paused, and she resumed, “Amy’s been having a lot of 𝓹𝓻𝓸𝓫𝓵𝓮𝓶𝓼 lately.”
