2月2日 Summary:

The Fujiwara clan acted as regents of the Emperor for nearly 200 years--though they weren't emperors in name, they wielded the most power. The best method for them to do this was to have daughters marry into the Imperial family and bear heirs (aka sons) to take over the position. Fujiwara no Yorimichi inherited the position of regent from his father, Fujiwara no Michinaga. While Fujiwara no Yorimichi was able to marry his daughter(s) into the Imperial family, no heirs were born, thus making him lose control over the succession of the throne. The power of the Fujiwara clan began to diminish from that point and those who began to control the Imperial court made sure to exclude the Fujiwara clan where they could.

Yorimichi retired in Uji, founded 平等院 (Byōdō-in) and became a monk. A portion of the temple is actually depicted on the back of the 10 yen coin.
