As THE Morro blog, this is my time to Shine.

I adore the fact that his biggest flaw is his fear of being wrong. Because it is so visceral, real, and it is the root of everything.

Let me elaborate: He has a deep-seeded fear of being inadequate and lacking due to his upbringing. So when he was not only taken in by a kind stranger, but also led to believe he was special and had some grand destiny? It soothed everything and healed a big part of him.

It’s when Wu tells him he is not meant to become the Green Ninja that this place inside of him breaks again. He doesn’t take Wu’s (and his) assumption as being wrong. Despite cursing destiny, we can see he clearly believes HE is he problem underneath it all. That he must be lacking in something, that he’s wrong for the job. That it was too good to be true. That Wu would revoke the love because he was wrong.

So he spiraled into a descent of denial. He did everything he could to convince himself there was nothing wrong with him, and all he had to do to prove it was become the Green Ninja. Eventually, this extends into genuinely deluding himself into believing none of his actions are incorrect. Because if he were wrong, it’d mean he has always been wrong. And undeserving. And unlovable. Probably moreso now after going so far.

All his cunning, his tenacity, his hubris is rooted in insecurity and fear of failure. This fear of failure leads him to become so hyperfixated on strength meant for another that he never sees his own, even in his dying breaths. Which is a shame, because we can clearly see he is very formidable and one of the toughest Elemental Masters out there without even reaching his Full Potential!

His final scenes in Possession are moreso…a rejection of the notion that Wu could love him and consider him amongst the prized in spite of everything. Because if he failed and he was wrong, then there would be no reason to love him.

Which, of course, leaves me to speculate just how much the Cursed Realm affected him. Because he seems to be in a much better headspace in DOTD after spending some time in the Departed Realm and having more time to heal/process Wu’s parting words and actions.

okay, so: hot take. and don’t point and laugh because it took 11.5 years. but hear me out: jay’s true potential episode is way more insightful and less tacky than it seems.

rewatching the series, and something stuck out to me. he specifically unlocked it after nya tells him that the best and most likable version of him is the person who he truly is.

from what we know about jay’s character now, it makes WAY more sense to view this from the sense of finally feeling valued and accepted for himself. being enough on his own, as he was. having that space of belonging and building relationships on his own merit. more than simply protecting a love interest, he wanted to protect one of the first people who gave him that. the first to vocalize it other than probably ed and edna.

so i’m not sure it was actually about the Stereotypical Romance Subplot at ALL, even if it played into the episode for laughs/to set up the plot of wanting to impress others (her) in a more obvious light.
