Discovery is important because you can grow as a person, develop your knowledge base and improve yourself for the better. Learning something new gets us access to new and different opportunities and the chance to try new experiences that might be the best ones someone has ever tried. Discoveries can help someone find a new skill that they never thought they could do and this can influence the way you do things day to day and they will make doing things quicker and easier, as well as save your time, energy and stress. Finding discoveries across our lives is essential for staying up to date in an ever-changing world. If we stop discovering things, we can stagnate and have no progress.

Wollstonecraft discovers how marriage is problematic because it is seen as a duty and that marriage should be seen as a process to better the self. She realizes that this causes a woman to lose herself and makes her focus on another person's values and morals. The idea that a woman’s sole duty in life is marriage and then a woman’s life stops to have meaning after marriage is a negative and has no benefits. She thinks people go into marriage blindly because marriage is a societal expectation. Even though she thinks romance is important, she discovers that compatibility and comparison are equally important. She discovers that love can be felt by all, but not all have the intellect to be able to be marriage “It is acknowledged that they spend many of the first years of their lives in acquiring a smattering of accomplishments; meanwhile strength of body and mind are sacrificed to libertine notions of beauty, to the desire of establishing themselves—the only way women can rise in the world—by marriage” (9). Wollstonecraft considers marriage problematic in her time because she felt that women spent too much time focusing on appearances instead of educating themselves and loving themself as a person. This GIF relates to the thesis because you have to discover from within yourself how to love yourself and try not to please other people by adapting to them and their needs which she mentions. It can also relate because it can show how women are forgetting about their own identity. The discovery of yourself can finally give you a chance to love yourself which can be the best for a person.

Kuhn had thought about discoveries and their role in the development of science. In Kuhn’s text on pg. 143 he says, “How are they able, what must they do, to convert the entire profession or the relevant professional subgroup to their way of seeing science and the world? What causes the group to abandon one tradition of normal research in favor another?” Here Kuhn is emphasizing the struggle within progressing science. Because people have believed one thing for so long, these questions must be presented in order to discover how to go about getting solutions to getting people to accept the new things. This ties to the picture because in the 6th Century BC, people declared the world was round although other Greek philosophers remained unconvinced until 330BC when Aristotle defended the idea of a round Earth. However, it took many more centuries before the fear of falling off the edge of the Earth was put to an end by explorers such as Christopher Columbus when he set sail around the globe in 1492. This image relates to the thesis because it shows how essential staying up to date in a world that is constantly changing really is. Discovery of different things can replace the ignorance of society. He made claims when it came to the progress of scientific discovery and emergence of new scientific theories and paradigms. We are naturally inclined to use these discoveries to know the world around us.

Coates discovers that if his son goes through the struggle which he most likely will have to endure due to his race, he will learn a lot of lessons which can make him and better person. This picture relates because this could be how Coates encouraged his son Samori to be vulnerable to participate in this “struggle” because he knows that this will help shape his son to become a better man. This image ties to the thesis because it can show how the discoveries his son will find in the future can help him be influenced which can help him during his life. By not handing his son everything in life, and not shielding his son from all the negativity that can happen on the streets, it will make him become a stronger and more importantly a smarter young man. This image can relate because Samori can be sad as he hears Coates telling him to uncover, find his own answers, explore his own discoveries because this can be hard to him. Even though his son may want to be shielded, this can help him to be more stable and functional in the tough society. Coates also does not want to provide his son with all the answers to the questions that he comes to him with, he wants him to go out there on his own and discover these things with others to find out answers and get other peoples’ points of view, not just that from his father. The line from the book that really makes this stand out on page 68, it reads “The struggle is in your name, Samori— you were named for Samori Toure, who struggled against French colonizers for the right to his own black body.” Coates named his son after a man who struggled his entire life in captivity, just to symbolize all of the pain that African Americans have dealt with up until that point when he was born.

Hayy wants to know everything he possibly can as he is truly eager to discover. He is intrigued by everything around him. He wanted to know knowledge about other animals. “Constantly learning and improving the quality of his mind until he had reached the level of the finest natural scientists”(117). This shows that he wants to try and discover as much as possible. The picture of the heart ties to Hayy because Hayy dissects his mother, which makes him observant and shows the discoveries that he has gained despite being raised by animals. Deciphering that the heart is the source of all life, this shows that he has very high-level thinking capabilities. It also ties to the thesis because Hayy grew as he discovered new things. Hayy has upper-level thinking now since he has started discovering and he is able to use this higher thinking when processing life’s events, such as understanding the heart. I feel as if he is fond of discovering because he grows up to discover the truth about the world and his own place in it, unaided, but also unimpeded by society, language, or tradition. Hayy’s discoveries about God, nature, and man challenge the values of the culture in which the tale was written as well as those of every contemporary society. The most important thing to take from the text is the search for discovering new things that Hayy has.

Galileo pondered a lot about Catholicism’s viewpoints on the world and he believed that God didn’t give us just the Bible to view the world but to also give us the ability to try and explore outside of the bible’s doctrines. This quote from Galileo says, I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with senses, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use and by some other means to give us knowledge which we can attain by them” (page 5, lines 185-187). He’s saying how beautiful it is to look at the world and have that full understanding since we aren’t prohibited to look at the earth in other ways. The Catholic church told Galileo that he could not believe in Catholicism and be a scientist simultaneously. Galileo thinks that religious people should experience things for themselves such as science and try to make important discoveries instead of falling for anything someone tells them. This image shows how the earth revolves around the sun which was Galileo’s scientific theory. He saw it with his own eyes through a telescope that he made to look at the stars close up. The Catholics believed the earth did not move and was the center of the universe. It relates to the thesis because Galileo would want the religious people to make discoveries for themselves and not just follow the pack without question. Galileo believed that God had given humanity it’s intelligence for the purpose that we use it to stay away from being stagnant.

Plato understand the importance of discovery when he describes the Allegory of the Cave and understands that the ability to obtain new discoveries and knowledge he can find outside of the cave. Aladdin is on a magic carpet and he tells Princess Jasmine that they can leave the palace and explore the world. Princess Jasmine is thrilled by this ride as Aladdin shows her the world around her and this causes her to open her eyes and see the world differently and this causes her to change her point of view. This can relate to the Allegory of the Cave because they do not understand anything besides what they have seen in the cave and it is the duty of the people imprisoning them to teach them what the real world is like. Aladdin does this by giving Princess Jasmine this opportunity to see how the world looks on his magic carpet, which gives her a different perspective. Like Princess Jasmine, the prisoners need to see this wake-up call and stop settling for an imperfect and unexplored life, but also to be skeptical of everything and to take everything you encounter in life as an opportunity for finding the true reality of the world. This quote states, “All in all then what the prisoners would take for true reality is nothing other than the shadows of those artifacts” (page 209, 515 b11-c1). This explains how we just see the shadow of things in our lives, but we don’t see the true form of these things that we see. I believe this picture relates to the thesis because she is trying a new experience and it seemed to be the best thing for her. We are given the chance to break free and try to push ourselves further and realize that discovery can be for the better, then we must help those who did not get that opportunity.
