Quote 1: How do I even begin? Okay, so Emet-Selch is an Ascian, part of a group of nigh-immortal villains who for most of the story had just shown up, been mustache-twirlingly evil, and then either fucked off or gotten killed. When we meet him, he's different. More affable. Offering to work with the protagonist and see if they'll see things his way. Because it turns out he and the other Ascians are the last remnants of the original inhabitants of the planet the game is set on. The planet had been split into 14 shards of itself (long story, it involves an apocalypse) and all they had done was part of an effort to put it back together--restoring their people at the expense of everyone currently living on the shards. Unfortunately, the heroes cannot allow this to happen, and the player character and their party do kill him. The above quote is his last words, a final request that we keep him and his people alive in memory.

Quote 2: Listen. This man is utterly batshit. He shows up directly on the heels of an expansion where the villains were complex and tragic, and while he's sort of affiliated with them (and also does turn out to be pretty tragic himself), he's being completely straightforward about his motivations in this quote. Dude just wants to cause the apocalypse so he and everyone else will die.
