I’ve been thinking of reblogging this and typing a response for so long, but I haven’t. Somehow no thoughts but also head full. I am so blown away. This chapter hit me hard at least 4 times over. It has at least two of my favorite tropes (carving words and false executions) directed at my favorite character from this series. I cannot stop thinking about how Gavin is going to feel about that scar when the family sees it. Just...

Gavin woke with a kick to the gut. He gasped and moaned, weakly covering his head with his hands as he looked up at the guard standing over him. His left eye felt too big for his skull, like it would burst out of his head if he moved too fast. His ears rang and his stomach heaved.

The guard held out a gray cotton shirt. Gavin’s heart ached in his chest as he looked at it, faint brown lines still staining the back of it. His hand shook as he reached out to take it. Despair crept into his heart as he pressed the shirt to his face and breathed.

The shirt smelled like homemade soap and the faint tang of disinfectant. Tears burned in his eyes as he muffled a sob.

Fucking Daniel, pretending he knows what Isaac thinks when a few chapters ago he was threatening to kill Isaac if Gavin didn’t write the note. I hate him so much and he needs to stop pretending he gives a fuck about Isaac, let alone respects him. For that matter, he needs to stop,, just about everything.

Would be a shame if Daniel found out more of Gavin’s past and used that to torment him more. 😈

Gavin groaned and rolled onto his side, hissing through his teeth as the cane marks flared with pain. The air seemed to ache against his skin, his head swimming in the dim light of the basement. He shivered as the cold air chilled the sweat drying on his skin. The faint scent of blood made his stomach roil.

His eyes flew open and he sat up with a gasp. He cried out as pain tore through his back. The collar jerked him to a stop, the rope tying him down shortened until he could hardly sit up all the way. His heart pounded in his chest as his gaze swept the cell. Isaac was gone. There wasn’t even a smear of blood on the floor.

Cold gripped his heart as he raised his gaze to the man standing outside his cell with a smug, twisted grin on his face. Gavin licked his lips and trembled as he met Schiester’s eyes.

“Wh-where is Isaac?” he croaked, terrified to know the answer.

Schiester smiled wider. “Interesting.”

i know it’s been said before but no book character will literally ever be as iconic as peeta “if it weren’t for the baby” mellark. like in book 1 when he confesses to having a crush on katniss on live televsion, that’s strategic. he knows he won’t win the games but he can help keep katniss safe and send her home and get district 12 a victor. but in book 2 he’s like “well we’re all gonna die and there’s no stopping the games so i’m just gonna fuck shit up and make every capitol official’s life a living hell for as long as i can” and then he does. nobody is doing it like him

Gavin nooooo 😭😭😭 he’s going to be so emotionally fucked up,, and this after the callback to Daniel saying “I will break you in ways even your twisted mind can’t imagine”,,, so much trauma will result from this

(like everyone else, I too am loosing my shit at Gray calling Gavin their son multiple times,, Gavin may not deserve the kind of torturous punishment Daniel is giving him, but he does deserve a good parent since the Stormbecks were so shit at parenting)

Her shoulders hovered around her ears, the muscles locked, her hands worrying at each other as she looked out at him. Even from inside, she could see the tears shining on his cheeks, the redness of his eyes. As she watched he heaved a sob and dropped to a crouch, burying his head in his hands.

This hit me so hard that I wanted to let it marinate so I could write a fancy response but then life got in the way of thinking of one so I’m just gonna word vomit because that works too. *inhales* HOLY SHIT. This scene felt so vivid and so real that even though I rationally knew what the plot was I still couldn’t help wondering what was actually happening to Gavin and what wasn’t. I can only imagine it’s so much worse for Gavin, who has no way of knowing where the team currently is in figuring out what’s going on. Sure would be a shame if Daniel kept doing this so that even when he’s actually rescued, he continues to question reality, huh 😈

Isaac shivered as Finn stared at the note, their brow furrowed, their mouth twisted in a grimace as they leaned on the counter. Ellis stood just behind them, reading over their shoulder. They had circles under their eyes and looked exhausted, wrapped in the blanket they’d stolen from the couch.

Vera stood behind them both, her face like a storm cloud. She absentmindedly rubbed Tori’s shoulder as she clutched her tight. Tori’s eyes glittered with unfallen tears she as watched Isaac closely. Across the room on one of the couches, Zachariah, Sam, and Edrissa sat huddled in a pile of tangled limbs and clasped hands, worry stamped on each of their faces. Gray near Isaac, close enough to touch him but leaving him room to breathe.

As for Isaac, he stood back from everyone, watching them all through red-rimmed eyes, burning alive.

 …It was driving her mad. She was watching as that grown man dragged that plush around, talking to it as if it was alive and not putting it down not even for a second.

A man that was her friend. Someone she had known for a long time, that had studied with her and who had worked together.

And she couldn’t bear to see that shit any longer, someone who was so smart, funny and who had his fucking life together, crying over a fucking plush, apologizing to the thing for ‘taking her away from home’, soaking that dirty purple fur with his tears, curled up on the corner.

…She couldn’t take it anymore. She yanked the plush of his hands, and Blue – no, not fucking Blue. His name was Cecil and he had to accept that. HE needed to! – stared at her with wide eyes, making an absolute miserable yelp and trying to get her back.

But she was relentless.

“No. This is for your own good” she shout, as Cecil tried to grab the plush “It’s plush Cecil! A fucking plush, it’s not alive!”

“NO! G—g-give B-b-bonnie back! B-b-bonnie, please, please, w-w-why, B-b-b-bonnie!” his voice was loud and squeaky and desperate. She threw the plush on her bedroom and locked the door, holding Cecil back by the collar.

“Stop. Cecil you are a fucking adult! You don’t need a plush, you need to remember!” She shouts, feeling tears running down her cheek “PLEASE! I Just... I just want you back!”

“B_-b-b-boonnniee” Cecil tried to push her, fumbling with the lock, but of course it wouldn’t open.

“Talk to me. Please!” She screams again, the man doesn’t even pay attention to her, pushing at the door “…Just… Just let me know you are still there…”

…She sits on the floor, and watches as Cecil shouts at the door, screaming ‘Bonnie’ and ‘Sorry’ over and over. Eventually he tires… But doesn’t move. He leans his head against the door and stays there, crying silently.

He does not move or react to anything else. All he does is stares blankly at the door, whispering ‘please’ from time to time.
