so much of being an ok person is just 1) not panicking, 2) not taking things personally, and 3) not letting the vindictive gargoyle that lives in your head tell you what to do. this sucks because brains love doing those things

So I know these are bird pellets, but they're pretty damn big (a good inch and a half to two inches by an inch across), and from what I can tell they are comprised completely or almost completely of bug parts. Really, really, putrid smelling bug parts (and I KNOW they are really really putrid smelling bug parts because even I, with my terrible sense of smell, can smell them). They are pictured here in the bottom of a tall (32oz) deli cup (roughly 4" diameter on the bottom).
I came out to see what the hell was making such a huge fuss in my front yard for like 15 minutes straight, and found these where the bird had been screaming. Merlin refused to ID the bird by sound and I didn't see it (and I don't actually know it was the same bird anyway).
I took a photo of them with a quarter after putting them on my compost pile (I did not touch them at any point, just used the lip of the cup to scoop them), if that scale helps.

Anyone have ideas what this might be from? In southeast Michigan, USA, found between a big maple tree and my house in the grass.

One of the more annoying impulses of nominally leftist people living in the Global North (and I say this fully knowing that I have had this impulse in the past) is that they'll see a person from the Global South articulate some pretty obvious fact, like how the current gap in wealth between the two global poles isn't a natural state of affairs but actually the relative privilege of people in the Global North is maintained through exploitation of the Global South... they'll take it personally.
Like, you'll see someone articulate the fact that "hey so actually the fact that people in Finland can have cheap bananas all year round is actually indicative of global inequality and Finnish people's relative privilege over people in the global South" and people will draw the conclusion that the only reason that person would be saying that is because they want to call you a bad person. Therefore, because they called you a bad person, they're actually being mean. And when you think about it by being mean they're actually being the oppressor, and it's only natural that you respond by becoming Megahitler.
Anyway this is another indication of how sometimes people on this site play reactionary opposite day. It's a whole "actually masculinity is demonized" but with global inequality. Like those farmers in South America are the ones who are oppressing us by making coffee so dang expensive. How dare they actually.

Run Aground Update!
Tumblr media
The seventh book (and second full-length novel) in the Michigan Fleet series, Run Aground, is now posting one chapter every Sunday on Royal Road, Wattpad, and our new Michigan Fleet website! You can read it wherever you like, and can leave us comments so we know who’s reading where! (Please give us feedback, we’ve been writing this book for so long...) Every other chapter is illustrated by the talented cowriter-artists Roach and Splickedy. The book should stand alone fine if you haven't read the series, although it will be a richer experience if you've read After the Storm and Taste of New York.
After years trapped in a wealthy monster’s harem, actor Rafael Caro is a ghost of his former self. When he meets Rich Merrill, the newest captive, unexpected kindness brings him back to life and headlong into love. Rich, Rafael and their friends in the harem try to keep each other sane and safe in this cruel place—but no one escapes without help from outside...
Note: The series so far has been reasonably delicate with the subject of sexual coercion, but this story has a lot to do with captivity, exploitation, and depersonalization. We take those subjects seriously, and though we try to keep the hurt balanced with comfort, the dark topics are still prominent parts of the narrative. If you have triggers around sexual coercion and abuse, be cautious about this story. If you're into this shit: hell yeah welcome aboard!!!
Content warnings: dubcon, noncon, sexual slavery, violence, alcohol use, noncon drug and alcohol use, murder, attempted suicide.
At the rate of one chapter every Sunday, we’ll finish posting Act One in December, which is when the ebook will become available! Thanks to everyone who participated in the poll and sent us messages saying they actually wanted a single book but had voted for the multiple book option for our sakes or out of impatience – that was very clarifying for us. XD
Now go, read and enjoy on whichever site you prefer! (And if on Royal Road you feel like giving us kind reviews and ratings as well as comments and favs, ratings and reviews are what help the story's ranking the most and thus potentially get us more readers!)

my beloved mutuals a couple of you need to cool it with the moral purity stuff about AI. we do know that opening the chat gpt website does not actually put a stain on your soul, right. like it's fine to critique specific things about AI and how it's used but the devil's sacrament stuff is a little concerning.

Help out indie writers with no ad budget!
Our Michigan Fleet sequel novel (working title "Run Aground") is a good distance through the editing process, and we plan to put it on Royal Road as a free webnovel, posting one chapter every Sunday at noon EST, starting June 8th! One week away!! (If you haven't seen Run Aground's summary, check the bottom of this post.)
The first book, After the Storm, is now fully posted on Royal Road. Today, June 1st, After the Storm's Epilogue went up! Illustration below.
Here's where you come in: we need as many stars and reviews as we can get on this new platform so when we finally start on the new novel it'll go as well as possible! We are SO looking forward to sharing Run Aground with all of you, and every fav, follow, rating, comment and review (yes, on Royal Road comments and reviews are two different things) will help make it a success. (And also we delightedly read and reread every comment and review! Thank you guys SO MUCH for all the lovely reviews and comments, we love them all!!!)

plagiarism isnt bad because its theft -- copying is not theft, and theft is not inherently bad. to the extent and in the places where it is bad, it's bad because it's lying
