“Being chained down vs bounded to a mortal life are two different things my fine friend.” Mothi corrected Juju with a single sentence. The immortal demon knew all too well Juju wasn’t the brightest demon around; but alas, young Juju did have his wits. Mothi leaned his antlered topped staff on a nearby wall. He took great care to make certain his most prized position would not get damaged amongst the mist of stolen artifacts and books based around mythology.
“You’re right,” Mothi continued to speak, “My master and his daughter are visiting New Orleans for a few days on business and, as expected, I had to come along for the ride. On the side note, I actually wanted to see if you had anymore of these items...”  Mothi handed him a small written list. 5 items, varying from potions, charms, and artifacts had been written down from his master’s hand. “Lily’s illness is beginning to flare up once more, and my master is hoping to find a better alternative besides the medicines provided by “pharmaceuticals”, as the mortals call it. Able to help me out?”

JuJu sat on the floor behind his store’s checkout counter, surrounded by curios and occultic treasures, with a half empty bottle of Jack Daniel’s in his hand. The antique radio in the corner of the shop played some jaggity dark jazz that matched the aesthetic of the voodoo spirit’s shop exactly. Taking a swig of the bottle, the liquid warmed him from within as he grew more dizzy, aiding to his intoxication. The bell over the front door of the store chimed as footsteps entered. With a groan JuJu pushed himself up off the dirty floor and caught himself on the counter,
“Greetings! And welcome to the finest store this side of New Orleans! We’ve got a special sale going on, on gator skulls - three for the price of two! Come on inside and have a look around, and let me know if you need to know the prices of anything and- wait a minute.” his usual spiel ended as the sight of the person in front of him focused into view. “Mothi?! Is that really you?” He grinned through sharp crooked teeth.

It surely had been a long time since Mothi had visited New Orleans in the flesh. An approximate 5 years to be exact. A visit often happened one or twice a year, but to move permanently back here had been out of the question for the Lear Family. Luckily, he found himself back in the grand old city of sin.  Midday New Orleans brought back warm memories of when Mothi would stroll through the streets. Usually in dog form, his surroundings felt different when he approached the small Voodoo shop. As he expected, the shop still sat hidden in the corridors of the 17th century buildings.
“Juju?!”
He called out, not really expecting an answer. Tightly, he kept a grip on his wood carved staff. The feathers, knotted stings of yarn, and bones dangled making a noise as they clanged together.
“Mothi?! Is that really you?”
“Nice to see you aren’t on the streets, my friend.”

Demothi leaned against his staff as he waited for the mortal woman to respond. He noticed the softening of her eyes which made the resurrected demon feel better about all of this.
- “Then I can help you find your family.” -
“Really?” Demothi asked smiling a little, “I thank you miss. I really do. I promise I will bring no harm to you. Its against my nature to do so anyway.”
Demothi sighed but realized something...

Harlow drove through the cracked grey streets in her old blue pick up truck. Beside her sat panting a strange new dog she had picked up while on her quest for Jack Schmidt’s missing letter from 2006. In her denim jacket pocket sat the letter as her hands gripped tightly to the wheel. Staying at the speed limit of the sleepy town, Harlow drove into downtown Carey. The vehicle moved past historic buildings, most of which had been remodeled on the inside as an attempt to modernize the town. Green Day’s Time of your life played from the radio of the car and every now and again Harlow would glance over to the fluffy canine beside her, unused to the company but strangely enjoying it a bit.
“Almost there.” She spoke to the dog, it felt almost awkwardly dropped off as she had no name to call him at the end of her words.
Pulling up on a street lined with red brick sidewalks Harlow parked her car outside of a historical looking white building also detailed in brilliant red brick. Turning her keys to turn the car off she turned to the animal.
“Alright, now listen here because we have a slight problem. There’s no pets aloud inside, so you’re gonna have to be extra quiet and extra fast getting up those stairs. Capisce?”
Looking at the dog as it simply continued to pant she raised a brow.
What am I doing, talking to a dog like it can understand me? Grow up, Harlow.
Opening her car door and stepping out into the unbusy street Harlow checked to be sure no other car’s were coming. Closing her door and locking it manually while her green orbs peered around the lane. All clear.
“Alright, come on out.” She said after walking around to the other side of the truck and opening the door for the dog.
Making their way up to the unlocked front door of the apartment building she reached for the door handle and turned it, giving a small nod towards the dog.
“Here we go.” She whimpered, more to herself than anything at the fear her land lady would catch her with an animal inside the building.
Opening the door as silently as she could she let the dog go first.

Demothi chuckled, “That’s the thing miss, I can and I would. But, for some reason I am unable to remember anything from my past starting from the point I got separated from the family I protect. I do not know what caused this to happen and intended to find out. Please miss, I will do anything. I just need you to trust me.”

“I do not mind standing miss,” he answered softly, “After all, I have been a dog for many days now so it feels rather nice to be on two legs.”
He listened to the questions she had. Nodding, he walked over to a nearby mirror and looked into it. Of course being dead, he could not see his reflection. Yet he knew what he looked like.
“I assume they went back to Arizona...” he paused bringing his hand to his chest. He frowned, “Like I told you, all I want to do is return home to them. Can you help me?”

Demothi sighed and turned to face the woman. He had a smile of compassion on his face.
“Please do not have fear of me miss,” he stated calmly, “I come from the mountains of Arizona where my assigned family lives. I simply want anything but to simply return to them. The daughter I protect is 10 years old. She has a serious medical condition and when she dies, its my job to escort her to the afterlife. We are connected at the soul, so everything she feels… I feel. Her fathers are herbalist and own a small natural medicine store. Please try to understand that I will bring no harm to you. I am not allowed to do harm to any mortal woman I come across. That was the reason why I acted friendly earlier in my dog form. I appreciate you helping me out. Now please place down your weapon.”

Demothi growled to himself. He rubbed his eyes with his forefinger and thumb. Already the mortal woman was getting on his nerves. Then again, he had to understand that no one outside of his assigned family had ever seen a resurrected demon before.
Approaching the woman, he placed a finger on her mouth in attempt to silence her. “First of all, calm down please,” he said trying to sound calm himself, “Everything will be explained to you. One thing you will come to know about you is that I tend to get very very overwhelmed and an overwhelmed demon is never a friendly one.”
He walked around the woman again looking at all the unique items she had collected on shelves and tables. He chuckled, “Just like the father of the daughter I protect. He, too, tends to collect a lot. Yet, you still have yet to answer my question. How did you get your hands on my staff?”

- “You... you shape shift? -
- “That thing does magic? -
Demothi sighed at the many questions the mortal woman asked all at once. Why out of everyone did he get stuck with her?
Although she was nice, she was a nonbeliever in the world he lived in.
Turning around to face her, he lifted his hands allowing fog to form in it.
It took the shape of a small hare. Scratching at its ears a few times, Demothi released it into the air and it hoped around several times moving towards the direction of the mortal woman.
“Yes, to both of your questions,” he answered, “My name is Demothi. I am a resurrected demon brought back from the afterlife to protect the daughter of a family I was assigned too. Unfortunately while in New Orleans on vacation I became separated from that family and from my staff. I still have no clue of how I came to be in Carey, but thanks to you, no less, I am reunited with my staff and finally am able to take human shape.”
He paused to look at the mortal woman who thankfully lowered her weapon though he knew such mortal weapons could not come to harm him.
“Are you getting of this?” he asked.

Kissing the wooden staff, he smirked at the feeling of power flow through his undead veins. Life finally came to him again.
Color hued his pale skin forming him to look more human than a resurrected demon. Moving the staff upward, he heard the sound of bells ring against one another.
- “Hey get away, that’s not yours!” -
Demothi paused to give the woman a unimpressed expression before he coughed a chuckle.
“Of course its mine. I’ve been looking for it for nearly a year now. My question is...” he moved towards her, “...How did a non-believing mortal like you come to get your hands on it? Ya, don’t think I can’t read your soul now miss. I don’t believe in the supernatural.”
“You want proof?” he responded with a question, “I’ll show you!”
Demothi looked around at something he could manipulate. Spotting a almost very dead plant in the background, he walked to it. Moving his fingers through the feathers, skulls, and beads that decorated the staff, he eventually placed his fingers against the moist soil.
After a few seconds, it grew almost three times it original hight and danced softly as it a gentle wind blew against it. A single branch with leaves reached out to Demothi’s finger and wrapped around him.

“Miss please,” Demothi’s voice shook, “I can explain everything. Just please lower the gun.”
At her command, he turned around revealing a rather youthful but aged face. His golden eyes glistened like diamonds as the sunlight reflected off of them.  “You invited me in did you not? I was that dog who was here a moment ago. Please miss just lower your weapon and wait a second...”
He paused as the mortal girl continued to hold the weapon up to him. Raising his brow, a smile grew across his face. He moved forwards towards the woman but moved around her heading to the corner of the house.
“There’s my baby,” he spoke chuckling loudly.

Oh at the worst possible time, Demothi thought to himself rather thankful he was in clothing sewed together from Elk and Bear skins. His long hair covered his face as he investigated himself closer, with his dark golden eyes, to make sure everything was covered properly. He did not want to scar the young mortal woman before introducing himself.
However, he began to think. How did he gain his human form back? Usually he needed his wooden staff to transfer between dog and man. Was this a sign his precious tool was near by?
“Okay,” Demothi whispered to himself clearing his throat, “Just remain calm. If I transferred back that means my...”
He froze. A haunting sound of a gun clicking stopped Demothi’s undead heart. He gulped and brought his hands up, “Please miss,” he spoke dare not to turn, “Do not shoot me. I will not harm you.”

Demothi waited patiently in the living room while the mortal girl got him food. He even took a moment to scratch himself when he felt something off happening to him. His heart pounded loudly against his chest
Oh no, he thought to himself folding his ears back, please not now! Curses! Why now?!
Distracted by a bowl of food, he sniffed it as the mortal girl placed him down in front of him. Yum, it smelt fantastic. Licking his lips, he accidentally started to wag his tail as he dug into the bowl of meat and potatoes.
He pricked his ears up as he heard the woman walk away once more. However, the food became all to distracting. He dug his face into the bowl once more when he realized something had happened....
“OH COME ON!!!”
