What my intentions were with making Negan comic gray unlike his environment: Negan fights with depression a lot and has considered suicide plenty of times. But the comics tell you a lot through his actions that he’s a survivor. He wants to give up but it isn’t in him. I love that about his character.

So he’s gray to symbolize depression but he’s in nature that reflects him (I’ve always considered sunflowers to be his sort of symbol of hope)

And he’s in gray except for his eyes which are the warm brown color I love so much. He’s still alive in there and he’s looking forward toward the future.

The sun could be setting to symbolize the end or it could be a sunrise to symbolize a beginning. He chooses wether he’s had enough or if he wants to wait for a new day.
