There’s a small section about the security guard character in the recently released fanbook.

Guard: "What?! A question for me?"  Interviewer: I want to know your name! Are you aware of Ekubo using your body again and again? Guard: My name is Yoshioka Mamoru (吉岡護), I am a true background character. 

 (The word for background character is Mob, so the joke is that he's a real mob....) 

I'm one of the most popular characters despite my very small role. As for me, I'm copyright free, or at least I think I am, so please make lots of spinoff content! 

 (What he means here is that he's not one of the main cast, so he's not a trademarked character. This is similar to our concept of something being in the public domain. Making and selling fanworks is technically illegal in japan....but he's safe so you can make as much fan content as you wish of him. In fact he's asking you to do so because he's rather minor )

Okay so the new MP100 book came out....

And we learn that:

Reigen’s father is a local politician/elected government official. Reigen’s mother is a homemaker Reigen’s sister is a bank clerk.

If his father is an elected official, image would be really important to him. It recontextualizes the seperation arc, because if Reigen was all over the news. He must have brought a lot of scandle to his family. 

His mom scripted an apology for him because he’s the son of a public figure.

It makes sense now that he held a press conference to address the allegations, instead of say, releasing a statement online. 

Reigen would have grown up watching his father maintain one face for his voters and another for his family.

It makes sense now that he’s great at debate and managing situations with words, because he would have grown up in a family where choosing your words carefully was an essential skill, having watched his father, campaign, debate other candidates, give press releases....etc

Everything makes sense now, why he is the way he is. Why he feels compelled to make a name for himself. Why taking on facades comes so naturally to him. All his inadequacies......

Coffee

There was that one day. A couple in their 30′s came into the consultation office.  It was the same as always for me. I read comics at the reception desk. Handwritten sign at mob’s lil table: Reception But then, while he was supposed to be talking with the clients, Shishou came over to where I was sitting. 

Reigen: Mob, I’m sorry, Can I ask you to run a errand for me?  We’re out of coffee for the guests.

Reigen: But I don’t want you to get it from the convienece store that we always go to. I’d like you to get it from the supermarket that’s around the corner from the bank. Ugh... The convienece store hasnt been carrying that brand of canned coffee that we usually get, so there’s no choice but to ask you to go a bit further than usual. While you’re at it, feel free to get a few snacks for yourself.  Mob: Got it. I’m going now.

Reigen: Watch out for cars okay? Mob: yes Shishou walked with me to the front door of the building.  I did as Shishou told me to do. I bought the brand of coffee that we always get for the office and a few small snacks for myself.  The supermarket was really far away.

When I returned to the office, only the lady client was still there.  After she drank one of the coffees that I had bought, she expressed her gratitude and left.  I noticed it then. As she was leaving, the lady client looked a bit different from when she first came in.  We waiting until she was gone. Shishou’s voice broke the silence.  Reigen: Mob...Don’t ever forget...

Reigen: The kind of person that society rejects without fail, are guys would raise their hand at a woman. Mob: ..... Got it....

Moon

Reigen: Oh! The moon is huge tonight.  Mob: It really is Reigen: Nowdays, the average person can go to the moon. You know how much it costs? Although, I think it’d be really difficult to do it in my lifetime. 

Reigen: But for you, you’d beable to just fly up there.  Mob: Um.... that’d be impossible... for the most part. Reigen: Being able to accomplish it “For the most part” is already really impressive.

Mob: .............. Reigen: Mob? What’s wrong? 

Mob: Huh .... I guess it doesnt hurt to try. Reigen: Eh? What? 

Reigen: H..Hey... I was joking just now okay?  Mob: We just talked about celestial bodies in geography class today. I guess that’s kind of similar.  Reigen: What, hey! This is..... Stop! Mob Wait! 

Reigen: You understand that it’s super SUPER far away right? It’s 380000 kilometers away. It’s like going around the earth 10 times. And there’s no air in space either...or air pressure. (I love how Reigen decides to trust his judgement. Like he lists all these reasons to not go, and says “that’s why you should”.... then he realizes that Mob can make his own decisions, and it’s okay. And he choses to be a supportive adult rather than a controlling one.)

Mob: Um.... Are you alright?  Reigen: Sorry about this. Calling you out so late at night, right before your exams. 

Mob: Though....using psychic powers on a person...... Reigen: It’s for an exorcism! So it’s really being used on spirits!! Mob: um.... Ekubo: Shigeo, lift him up a bit higher Mob: Like this? Ekubo: Yeah, like that.  Reigen: Oh.....

Reigen: .....Oh hahaha..... I’m flying......

Thank you.....You.... You wanted to make my wish come true didn’t you? It would be incredible if I could fly in the sky,.... I did say that didnt I..... (Note: Reigen’s childhood dream was to fly. It’s in Chapter 97 of the Manga)

Reigen: ....well, that should be more than enough. Mob: Master is flying.... Ekubo: It’s your powers holding him up Mob: Yeah.... but..... He looks like a huge bird.  Ekubo:...... I hate birds.

Reigen: Thanks Mob Ekubo: Slow down a bit Shigeo, his bones might not have returned to normal yet.  Mob: Okay

Reigen: I had to rely on you after all Mob: I think Ekubo could have done it if he really tried. It would have been more complicated. He probably didnt want to risk hurting you. Ekubo: Hey.... Shigeo... that’s enough...

The story of the box

Reigen: Ekubo What do you think this is? 

-Narration- ...he said, while holding out a small box.  Ekubo: Well... It does feel like there’s something there, but it’s so weak there’s almost nothing left. Something like this really can’t considered a spirit anymore. It’s more like there’s some residual energy left behind.  Reigen: It’s not like a harmful negative energy, is it?  Ekubo: It doesnt even have positive or negative qualities anymore. There’s barely anything left. If you just left it alone, it would dissipate on its own. 

Reigen:  Well, regardless, why dont you take a look inside. Reigen puts the box in Ekubo’s hand.  Ekubo: Huh? Ekubo: What’s in here anyway?  The box opens with a click

-Crying sound- There’s a piece of flesh inside. Its smooth texture glistening within the confines of the tightly sealed square box.  Moist and reflective. It’s moving... as if it’s breathing.... as if something beats within Contracting  methodically.... beat by beat. It continues.

Ekubo: Rei....Rei....gen....You.... Why did you.......

Perhaps it was a dream

I should hear him out at the very least, so I bent down towards him “So lonely”  “It hurts”  “it hurts so much”  “scared”  “dont leave me” “He’s having a hard time”, I thought.... and so I gave him a pat on the head

Reigen is throwing up. I said I was a man and tha’t it wasnt possible... that there was nothing I could do.  -Splat- He dissappeared then, and I thought that was that.....but then..... -Reigen breathing noises-

Reigen: Well, if it’s harmful, then I’d feel a bit differently, but since it’s harmless I guess I’d...... Ekubo: THE HELL !?

Ekubo: What are you talking about?! Were you going to hold on to something like this? Reigen: But...

Reigen: This thing.... it’s that child isnt it?  Look, it’s still moving. 

Reigen: He’s still.... Ekubo cuts him off: ....Reigen

Ekubo: That thing..... it’s already dead. I told you already, it cant even be considered a spirit. It doesnt have a soul left anymore. It’s already gone.  It’s not a spirit, nor it is a living thing.  There’s nothing more you can do for it.  It’s nothing more than a piece of flesh. 

Reigen...... Is that so? Ah.... It’s stopped moving

Reigen: I guess.... perhaps I had a child of my own, if only for a moment. 

Ekubo: Dont say things like that. 

Ekubo: If I told you at that moment that it was still alive, you would have held on to it wouldnt you? 

Sometimes....You’re quite scary too..... (I wouldnt call this Ekurei, since theres no shipping. I love Ekubo’s bewildered, freaked out expressions in this one, as well as his irritable but common sense take on the situation.)

Reigen: So.... uh... I think I might have contracted some kind of pigeon curse or something.  Ekubo: What did fight with some pigeons for breadcrumbs or something?  Reigen: What?! No! Ekubo: So then, what’s going on? Reigen: I have no idea. That’s the problem Ekubo: Are you sure this is some supernatrual thing?.... as opposed to say, some weird genetic problem that you have?  Reigen: None of my relatives are birds. Reigen: .....and I hate birds. Can you just shut up and cut the sass?! Ekubo: What? You dont like my Reigen-impression? I thought it was spot on!  Reigen: Shut the fuck up.

Ekubo grabs the blanket. Reigen: Hey!  Reigen tries the pull the blanket over his head: Fuck off!  Ekubo: Yeah, yeah, whatever, just let me take a look.  Ekubo looking at Reigen’s wings: You know.... I think this suits you, Reigen. 

Reigen: Stop talking about it like it’s not your problem! Ekubo: Well.... this really ISNT my problem is it?  Reigen: If Mob sees me like this, he’s going ask “Shishou, are you really an angel?” Ekubo: Stop flattering yourself, he’s going to be like “Is this a cosplay?” Ekubo: It’s so strongly manifested it looks solid and real. Something like this looks like it’s going to be very challenging to remove. Are you sure you have no idea how youbrought this upon yourself?  Reigen: None at all. I’ve always been kind to animals. 

Ekubo: So then... Why did you specifically ask me to come with a body? Reigen: Um...yeah about that. Reigen: I can’t go out like this right now, so I wanted you to go and get groceries for me.  Ekubo: YOU CALLED ME HERE TO RUN YOUR GODDAMN ERRANDS?! Ekubo: WHY DONT YOU ASK SERIZAWA?!  Reigen: Well, asking an employee to come and take care of the boss outside of work, would be a abuse of power of the employer employee relationship, wouldnt it? Ekubo: OKAY BUT WHY AREN’T YOU EXTENDING THE SAME SORT OF COURTESY TO ME?! Ekubo: You....Goddamit....You really.... (Hahaha I love this part. Seri is am employee. Becasue the the hierarchy between Reigen and Seri, Seri can’t refuse. Ekubo is just his friend, so it’s okay to ask him.)

Ekubo angrily shops for groceries Ekubo angrily walks back with groceries Ekubo: YOU ARE GOING TO DIE HORRIBLY SOMEDAY

Reigen: Yeah, I’m sure you’re going to heaven or something too. 

Ekubo thinks: Birds, huh...They can be surprisingly aggressive creatures.  But... it is merely the spirit of a normal animal? Doesnt seem like it. Not when it’s so strongly manifested.  Wait.... why am I dwelling on this? He’s even not making a big deal of it himself, so why should I be so fixated on this? 

Ekubo floats into the office and stares at the empty desk.Then he sighs and leaves. Some time later, he rings Reigen’s doorbell

Ekubo: Hey! Reigen! I’m here to see you! Open up! He starts kicking the door. It’s very quiet and he starts getting bad vibes.  Ekubo: Hey! Reigen! Reigen:  What do you want? It’s open.  Ekubo: Eh?!

Reigen: Wh..at....do..you....want.....

Ekubo: Hey! Reigen! Wake up! Are you still alive? Goddammit. All of your goddamn feathers in the way.  He grabs and lifts one of the wings.  Reigen is struggling to breathe: Ekubo....shut up... Ekubo: What the hell! Stop scaring me! Are you okay? Reigen: I guess.... It’s so hot..... everything hurts......I’m sorry Ekubo.....Just.... let me rest for a bit.... Ekubo: .................. Forgive me...... 

Reigen: ....ugh..... Ekubo: Hey... you awake? Reigen: Ekubo...... Ekubo: Reigen. How much do you weigh?  Reigen: Huh? Around 66kg (145 lbs) i think.... Ekubo: Your weight right now is not even 50kg (110lbs).

Ekubo: Those wings are using your body as a source of energy. The act of them manifesting themselves, is causing changes to your body.  When I possessed you to get you into bed just now, your body felt hollow and empty, it felt like if I exerted any effort something would break. And on top of that, you have a fever.  I’m just speculating, but I think your bones are hollowing out.  Birds have hollow bones with internal struts, so that would cause your body to become lighter.  Should have taken those wings off by force from the very beginning.  You could probably fly with those now. 

Ekubo: There’s something else Reigen: There’s more?  Ekubo: Yeah... just a bit... listen. Ekubo: They’re not pigeon, i dont think.... they’re crow.  Reigen: Why? Ekubo: You want an explanation?

Ekubo goes into a lenghty explanation: Well, pigeons and crows are both medium sized birds, but they have different wing structures. In crows the 10th primary is very short. The feather arrangement in pigeons have an internal gap, crows have this too, but they’re~ He gets cut off. Reigen: THIS IS SO UNNECESSARY!! ARE YOU SOME KIND OF PROFESSOR, YOU EVIL SPIRIT.... Ekubo: Hey, I just looked this up while you were out. You dont even know what you are possessed with. You are so much trouble. Reigen: Oh....um.... thank you so much for putting in all of this effort.  Reigen: Actually.... now that you mention it, if it’s crow, I think I might have some ideas on how this started. Ekubo: Huh? What did you do? 

Reigen: Well, nothing really. I just greet them every morning. There’s a saying that if you greet a crow, then it won’t do bad things, like go through the trash and such.  Ekubo: Why? Reigen: I’d just say hello to them and stuff. Ekubo: So they probably regarded you as one of their own. And if they did, it’d baffle them why you didnt have wings. 

Ekubo: You wanna see if you can fly?  This isnt a curse, or a hex or somethiing like that. It’s more like a very strong wish. They want you to fly too. 

Reigen: I feel like if I flap my wings, I’ll die. 

Ekubo: That makes sense. You probably dont have the muscles necessary to use the wings. Even if you jumped off of a high place, you’d only beable to flutter while falling. 

Reigen: Yeah

Mob: I heard master was in trouble so I came as fast as I could.

Tome: Thanks for coming with me to pick up my stuff Ekubo-chan. Ekubo: Heh Youre a student. How could you forget your homework? Tome: Hehe -They round the corner and there’s sounds of arguing- Tome: Huh? Ekubo: Huh? Voice: You made me feel so good after. Reigen: Well thats really…. Voice: I wanted to ask for your help again, and I never thought I’d run into you here. It’s too much of a coincidence. It must be….

Ekubo: What are they doing? Who is that? Man: You saved me! It was all your doing. Reigen: Im glad to hear that. Man: I’d love to have you over so I can properly thank you. Please come to my place. It’s very close to here. Reigen: Oh you dont have to thank me. It’s my job. I couldnt possibly accept.

man: It’s really very close! Reigen: I’m so sorry, today is a bit inconvienent. Ekubo: Why is it this guy (Reigen) who’s run across an unsavor character? Tome: What a needy client... Man: Surely, you’ll accept, right Master Reigen? I’d love a personal massage from you. Reigen: I’m sorry, Curse removal house calls are not part of the service package that we offer.

Tome: Ugh gross Tome thinks: Oh

Ekubo: Hey Reigen Got Trouble? Reigen: Ekubo

Reigen: Oh no, He was just on his way home, right? Man: Um well... uh.... yeah,... sure. I’ll see you around then.

Reigen: Ow! The hell are you doing?!

Ekubo: He transferred his obsession... things like this arent worth eating. He grabs it and it pops. 

Reigen:?  Ah, Tome, did you pick up your things?  Tome: Ive got everything, Thank you Mr. Reigen. Reigen: As you just witnessed, there’s  dangerous stuff out here. It’s best you head straight home.  Tome: Okay

Ekubo: That situation didnt look good... and why are you come along? Reigen: I wrapped up earlier than expected. Why don’t you go return your body and I’ll take Tome home. Ekubo: So then... who’s taking you home. Reigen: What?  Ekubo: um Ekubo thinks: Shit....  Reigen: Hey... You....uh... Ekubo: Apologies, I did not mean to imply you were an idiot or anything Reigen: Sounds like you did.  And how long were you going to hold on to that body anyway.  Look, I appreciate the concern, but enough is enough. You can’t keep doing this. Ekubo: I’m aware

Reigen: If youre aware, why don’t you get going? Ekubo: This guy works the night shift today, so it’s not problem if he sleeps later. Reigen: I know but...

Tome: So then... this too is a form of favortism is it not? 

Tome: Ekubo-chan is an evil spirit, so he shows a kind of favortism for certain people.  Ekubo:................ Reigen: Um...Wha.... Tome: He said so earlier.  Tome: Isnt that an odd thing to say? He said it was because he’s an evil spirit. | Reigen:..... Ekubo: Having favoritism for specific people is something that humans have too, you know. 

(Note: I’m not sure if theres a better word for this, but the term that’s being used is Favoritism + Preferential Treatment. Ie. treating someone better than other people, because you like them. Like a positive bias thing.)

Reigen: Tomechan, we’ve.... lets leave it at that.   Tome: Huh?

-Narration- I don’t quite understand how these two relate to each other . If I had to describe it, theyre like bastard friends that still for some reason trust one another. 

-Narration- Bastard friend (This is kind of hard to describe, but it’s a bad friend that brings out the worst in you.) Friend Employee It doesn’t really matter what you call it. What ever it you call it, it ought to be preceded by the phrase “An Important”  Whether it’s giving importance to the other... or for you yourseld to be regarded held up as important.....they seem happier around each other because for it. It’s like the calming glow of single bulb at the dark core of them both. 

Tome: So then.... one would give preferential treatment to someone they’d assigned a special importance to. I guess an evil spirit would think in that manner.  Reigen: Please kill me Tome: Evil spirits are so difficult to analyze... Ekubo: I’m being analyzed?

-Narration- The evil spirit will be back at the consultation office tomorrow. Because he has a kind of affinity towards the boss

-Narration- No one is asking him to come, and he has not obligation to be there. He does so out of a kind of favoritism, bringing a kind of caring of his own accord.  Tome: Ah....So....do you know what he smells like? -Narration- I guess this is fine Reigen:You mean Ekubo? How would I know? Ekubo is sniffing his sleeve: Cigarettes. This guy smells like cigarettes, Im pretty sure.

-Narration- As for reason? It’s because he’s an evil spirit.  (Note: Im not sure who is speaking below:) Reigen: Can I take a whiff? 

Ekubo: Wha..This idea that people have their own unique smells to people isn’t a thing. This is ridiculous,

Tome: Guys? 

Reigen: I feel like he’d should smell like cucumbers

Tome: Huh? Ekubo-chan, you’re the only one here?  -Narration- There’s an evil spirit living at my work place. Ekubo: Why are you here again? And dont call me Ekubo CHAN.  Didn’t we tell you to stop coming? 

Ekubo: ennh...so tired -Narration- Well actually, he used to follow around one of the students at my school that was a grade below me.  Tome: Where’s reigen Ekubo: Errands. I’m keeping an eye on the office.  -Narration- Though I’ve never actually seen them (Ekubo and Mob) together.

-Narration- He doesn’t have a body. The one he has now is borrowed. In his original form, he looks like a green balloon. One day he started coming in to the consultation office in this body. Now he does it every once in a while Tome: Ekubo chan, would you like some tea? Ekubo: Sure, I’ll take some. 

Tome thinks: lukewarm (ie. The tea has gotten a bit cold) -Narration- A while ago, the office suddenly closed for a few days Ekubo: Lukewarm -Narration- After that was when it started (”It” being Ekubo coming in, in his body) I’ve asked my bossed about it. Tome: Why did you close the office with no warning? 

-Narration- His reply was

Reigen: The truth is, I became an angel. You have to keep it a secret though. 

-Narration- This guy never seems to have a straight answer. I dont know if it’s just too much trouble to explain, or if he doesnt want to talk about it.  Tome: Sure  Tome: What does he mean by angel? Ekubo: No shame at all huh!....

-Narration- I remeber clearly the way that spirit looked then. He seemed to stare at my boss rather meaningfully. But I dont know if my boss noticed. He didnt say anything.

He’s not an employee, because he’s not being paid. He’s goes to the office at the request of the kid he’s always following around, but he seems rather dedicated and invested in his right.

He’s an evil spirit If he wanted to he could dispatch the boss without breaking a sweat. 

Because the boss, Reigen aratake is not a psychic. 

Tome: By the way, how’s Mob’s entrance exams going? Ekubo: Ah.... He’s having a hard time. But Ritsu is helping out But, I think he’ll be okay. He works hard. 

-Narration- When the topic of conversation turns to my former underclassman (Mob) he doesnt feel like an evil spirit at all. He seems quite calm. I realized through this that his interactions with the boss is something different. 

Classmate: Eh? Tome?  Tome: Oh? You’re just now headed home? Classmate: Yeah. Did you forget something? Tome: Yeah

Classmate: And this man is..... Tome: Ah haha He’s from my part time job. He came with me because it’s unsafe to walk alone. So overprotective, am I right? Classmate to Ekubo: You’re a good guy.....sorry Ekubo: heh Tome: He’s got a scary looking face, but the red patches are his trademark.

Classmate: Is everything okay? -Narration- He’s an evil spirit Tome: Um... ye...yeah...We’ll anyway, see you tomorrow. -Narration- I keep saying this over and over.  Tome to classmate: Bye! 

-Narration- He’s a soul. Composed of nothing but energy. With no body. Existing outside of human constructs of morality.  Ekubo: Heh...you scared now?  I’m not going to eat you, you know.  Tome: Ekubo-chan

Tome: The red patches on your face... No one else can see them?

Tome: What.... Hey! Stop!

Ekubo: I can choose who sees it. It’s because I’m an evil spirit. It’s a kind of favortism if you will Tome: favortism.... (T/N Im not sure what word to use for this, but something like Partiality or preferential treatment. He’s saying that letting other people see what he truly is, is a favor afforded to a some people he selects.)

Tome: Youre pulling my leg right? Ekubo: Nah, you’re pretty badass. Tome: What?  Ekubo: That Hoshida guy, He’s got good taste. (Hoshida is the boy that was interested in Tome in the Reigen spinoff)

Tome: You mean upperclassman Hoshida? Why? Ekubo: No reason.  Ekubo thinks: Isnt it obvious Ekubo: Terrible -Narration- He’s an evil spirit. The body he’s wearing now isnt his. 

-Narration- Thinking about it, his voice, his physical sensations, the he who uses someone elses body to eat. Nothing is his, even something as simple as his own unique smell.  Or many he does and I just dont know. Maybe he does as a spirit and I’ve jsut never gotten close enough. I wonder what the otherworld (Spirit world) smells like.

Tome: Thanks for coming with me to pick up my stuff Ekubo-chan. Ekubo: Heh Youre a student. How could you forget your homework? Tome: Hehe -They round the corner and there’s sounds of arguing- Tome: Huh? Ekubo: Huh? Voice: You made me feel so good after. Reigen: Well thats really....
