I want to talk about how REAL it was for her initial boldness to start faltering during this scene. Like, the way sheâs fidgeting on her feet before âI want my ownâ and how she doesnât raise her eyes up to Markâs until the words have left her mouth.
Then thereâs the little stammer while she asks if heâd like the same, because he hadnât answered her yet and you can see her nerves doubling down when she looks away from his face again. Those wide, anxious and hopeful eyes completely betray the brave front sheâs trying to maintain.
THEN the subtle softening of her face when he finally answers and gives her that tiny smile. You can see every part of her literally sink with relief. Britt Lower, the actress that you are đđ
And donât get me started on Hellyâs little smile and the way she beckons Mark to follow. Although we didnât see it, she absolutely sussed out the desk room on her way back to find him just before.

Does the word realism have any meaning to you as an actor? No. When you say realism, I think of naturalism, and I think about natural acting. And when I think about natural acting, I think about natural behavior. And I think sometimes that destroys movies, you know? Because we donât just want to see imitations of life. We want to see something that is beyond that. Cinema is not just about telling stories. Everybody clings to this. Telling stories, telling stories, telling stories! Itâs about light. Itâs about space. Itâs about tone. Itâs about color. Itâs about people having experiences in front of you, where, if itâs transparent enough, they can experience it with you. You become them. They become you. Thatâs the communion. Thatâs the experience.
--Willem Dafoe summing up my feelings about the obsession with realism and an impoverished notion of "storytelling" in film in an interview with Matt Zoller Seitz
