I’ve studied the film industry and I find it funny that when you tell MarkGemmas about Dan’s script re-writes (aging up Helly from 19 to 30, giving Mark and Helly a romantic arc intertwining with the main plot) they brush it off or forget it.

In the film industry, you call that “rare chemistry.” Rare chemistry is when you find two actors with chemistry so palpable you actually re-work the narrative to suit it. Rather than ask your actors to conform to the pre-existing narrative, since they will turn any platonic interaction flirty.

Casting agents actually prioritize rare chemistry over the integrity of the story because it’s liquid gold in showbiz. You accommodate it.

Dan said “it made more sense to let their connection grow organically” which gave us two sex scenes in Season 2, in a show that was originally planned to be totally sexless both atmospherically and thematically.

That’s huge.

That’s the definition of rare chemistry. Rare chemistry almost always has real roots.

But I would imagine that’s too threatening for their ship, which is why they brush it off.
