It is only through forgiveness
Day 1 of @scottappreciation
Rating: Teens and Up
Word Count: 957
Characters: Scott McCall, Jackson Whittemore, Derek Hale, Lydia Martin
Sumary: Scott is a naturally good-natured person, he will go to great lengths to protect those he deems as innocent, those he thinks deserve the chance to do better. Because everyone does and he's willing to take that risk.
Warning: Not Beta Read
The first time he had to grapple with forgiveness was Jackson Whittemore, oddly enough. And it’s not like he hated his lacrosse captain he was just kind of always… an ass.
He never quite got why the other teen was like that.
Conceptually, he understood there had to be some power trip involved. Jackson was rich, so was Lydia Martin, and so was Danny Māhealani. His girlfriend and his best friend.
In a way, when Allison came into the picture, she also fit the bill. She was pretty and at the very least well off financially. Argent was, legally, in the business of security and legal gun trading, so that checked out.
But where Lydia and Danny were, for the most part, indifferent to those that weren’t on an even playing field with them, Jackson was mean. Almost bordering on bullying behavior.
So, he almost surprises himself when he jumps in front of him, to protect him from the surprise attack that the hunters had organized to trap Derek in his old family house.
He had first noticed that something was off when he entered the school lockers and noted a particularly strong scent. He could really explain how he was so certain, but he knew that it was Jackson’s smell. Maybe it was the distinct scent of the cologne.
Nevertheless, he followed the scent back to the Hale house, and from outside he snuck to the second floor to be able to put himself between Derek and Jackson more easily.
Jackson is pushy, and irritating. And Derek Hale has little to no patience for that type of personality, as evidenced by how he can’t really stand Stiles.
“-No one cares that you have perfect hair, and no one cares that you're captain of the lacrosse team.” He could hear Derek finish the sentence, as well as Jackson’s fear by the way his heart rhythm became erratic.
So again, he’s surprised. But it’s not like he regretted it.
Derek had no business trying to kill Jackson.
Again, asshole. But they have literal werewolf hunters trying to kill them. As is, it’s really not smart to give them any more excuses to act on them with lethal force.
So, yeah, he saved him. And he still seemed to fume at the fact that he hadn’t been turned.
But at least he was alive. He could continue to mess up and be with the people he loved, Scott had to guess that it had to be his parents and Lydia. And because he was still human, he had a chance to be free.
So obviously, because fate liked to laugh in the face of Scott trying his best to give people an option out, and Peter Hale did not count in this case, obviously Jackson had to go and ask Derek for the Bite.
He was also mad at Derek, too.
Being a werewolf, being turned into one rather, wasn’t exactly a walk in the park, and he didn’t really view it as a gift.
He was doing mostly good in spite of it, not because of it. Hell, he’d be doing better, because he wouldn’t have to worry about an old hunter trying to get his head. And every other new supernatural in the area. Which now included Jackson of course.
To top it all off, Derek’s intentions had clearly been for the bite to kill his co-captain, so that was a thing on top of another.
He seriously felt for the guy, but he really had to stop doing all he could to put other people in danger!
So really, Derek Hale was the second person to actually made in into his “you’re such an asshole but I still don’t want to see you getting killed” list.
Was it so hard for everyone to just try to stay out of mortal danger for five minutes?
The irony was not lost on him, but it still sucked.
So, then they figured out that it was Jackson who was killing all those people.
And he wanted to stop him, but he was done playing into the “killing him is the only option” agenda.
Not only was taking another life a huge thing. As in, depriving someone else’s ability to live, but Jackson also wasn’t actually the one controlling his own actions.
On that note, Scott wasn’t exactly happy to find out that Gerard had killed Matt.
Matt deserved justice, what had happened to him was horrible, and he couldn’t help but think that if someone had just… said something, this whole thing would just not have happened in the first place.
“Why did you never give up on him?” Lydia asked him, about an hour after Jackson had finally become a werewolf.
“I don’t know, he’s just a kid. Like us,” Scott shrugged.
Lydia looked up at him, incredulously.
“Somehow you’re always full of surprises, Scott McCall.”
Scott let out a sheepish smile.
“We can only change for the better if we’re given the choice to do better, right?”
That gave Lydia pause.
It wouldn’t be until Jackson went away, until people started to be attacked yet again, this time in an effort to make sacrifices for… something, that Scott understood the power of second chances.
“I thought you were going home,” Scott spotted Lydia just beside him, very much present at an event she hadn’t wanted to attend.
Lydia shook her head.
“I can’t.”
And if Lydia, who didn’t really understand her own abilities, who truly had no one to possibly learn control from, was willing to do whatever she could to save lives, then he could still see a world were death was not a norm.
Where death was a tragedy, not the solution.
Where life matters.

Man, Scott's murder just gets to me. It's the cruelty of it. Theo tears away all his friends and manipulates him and betrays him and humiliates him and poisons him and leaves him to bang on the bars of his cage for hours, knowing his murder is coming. He makes one of Scott's best friends try to kill him, makes Scott pick between dying and killing this kid. And Scott takes a violent beating and the only reprieve comes from another loss--that someone else has died, someone Scott has tried so hard to save, someone else he's failed. And Mason is so scared and needs answers Scott doesn't have, help he can't give. And all of that's over in seconds because Theo's gonna kill him even when it gets him nothing.
It's the smallness of it. Scott dies for nothing except Theo's desire to kill him! He won't get any power out of it, the Doctors don't care. Theo wants to kill him because he's "perfect," something that has to be so bitterly laughable to Scott right now. He's gonna kill Scott because he's a werewolf--because he was attacked in the woods one night and has been a target ever since. He's gonna die for that! He's gonna die because Theo is so obsessed with things that don't matter, being a real werewolf doesn't matter. It's so small and Theo's killing him so violently over it.
It's how desperately Scott clings to whatever little he has left. He's ground down so relentlessly into his own powerlessness. He can't save anyone, he can't escape, he can't fight, he can't breathe. By the time Theo kills him, he can't even stand--Theo is holding him up by the claws he's got buried inside him. Mason's lying unconscious beside him and Theo could kill him so easily if he wanted and Scott can't stop him and he's got to spend his final moments facing that. He's fought so desperately to have any control over his body and his life and to make things better for others, to make meaning of the violence that was done to him, and this is where it's gotten him and everyone he cares about. He's got a few final breaths before this person he thought was his friend--whom he tried to help--silences him forever and the only thing he's got is man, at least I know what matters. And does it really matter when all it gets him is those final tortured breaths before he dies alone and in pain.

As happy as I am about Kpop Demon Hunters, there's waaay to much English in these songs, which was one of my fears going into this. Like, it's freaking awesome as a whole, but Netflix and western media really knows how to water down culture. As a kpop fan since 2015, I used to have to look up lyrics to understand the song because it was mostly used for the chorus and it was only a phrase at best, but that never took away from the voices, the choreo or the concepts to be enoyable.
