You know, considering who (and more importantly how) Jiang Cheng's mother and father are he could've turned out a lot worse, especially in the early series when he was still a teenager/young adult. Like people be hating but he honestly wasn't a bad person back then. Angry and insecure? Yeah. But also fiercely loyal and loving in his own way.

I've also been rewatching Avatar the Last Airbender, and I think it's sad that Jiang Cheng never got the chance to realize that the love he so desperately wants from his parents isn't actually worth what it would take to get it. Parents are supposed to love you by default, and if they don't that is a character flaw /in them/, not their kid. Prince Zuko was able to come to that realization given enough time, but because both of Jiang Cheng's parents died he never got to actually learn that. Throughout the early series he was bending over backwards to try to please them but no matter what he was never able to because /they didn't want to be pleased with him./ He could've cured cancer, invented 10,000 new techniques, whatever amazing feat you want to think of and it would've never been enough for them because they didn't want to love him. It's so natural for kids and teenagers to blame themselves when they aren't loved by their parents, but in reality it has nothing to do with them.

If only Jiang Cheng had been able to learn that lesson before his parents died I think it actually would've changed the course of the narrative. I hate how people downplay his relationship with Wei Wuxian as being one of only master/servant. If Wei Wuxian was actually nothing more than a servant then realistically speaking Jiang Cheng would've dropped him the moment he sided with the Wen remnants but he didn't. Jiang Cheng actually considered Wei Wuxian to be his brother and he loved him. But even after the death of his parents he still so desperately wanted their approval even in their afterlife that he ultimately made the decision to prioritize trying to make them proud and rebuild the Jiang than side with his brother. If he had made peace with the fact that nothing would ever be good enough for his parents and had stopped chasing their approval before their deaths I think he may have made a different choice, because did Jiang Cheng even really /want/ to be the leader of the Jiang sect? He obviously was never capable of even asking himself that question before, but what if the answer was "no" or "maybe"? Maybe he would've said screw rebuilding sect and sided with Wei Wuxian and maybe together they could've ultimately saved the Wen or maybe they all still would've died anyways. Maybe he could've used the power of the newly rebuilt Jiang sect to help. Maybe they all would've been wiped out again, this time for good. Without the shadow of his parents hanging over him I think that there is the potential that he could've made different choices and I never really see the Fandom talk about that.
