The test-taking check off list:
1. Preview the exam.
Take a couple minutes to look through the test and see how many questions there are.
Why?
Well, you know that some tests don't have many questions while other tests are very lengthy (like the last exam).
Knowing how many questions will allow you to pace yourself and you'll know when to move on if it's a difficult question. Obviously if there are less questions, then you can give yourself a little more time per question.
Don't be embarrassed to be the last person taking the test. Use your time wisely.
2. Write on the test.
On all multiple choice questions, circle the answer you believe is right.
For challenging questions, cross out the wrong answers. If you have to come back to the question later, you'll at least know which ones you thought were wrong. This will save you time.
For hard questions that you can't solve, circle the question number and skip it. Remember, the goal is to save brain power so if you're in the spelling portion of the test and three questions are super hard on one page, just circle the question number in the booklet, put a light pencil marking next to the number on the scantron and move on to the next question.
3. Tackle the easy ones first.
We know this test includes reading comprehension, sentence clarity, spelling and grammar, and the CLOZE portion. You should know which is the most challenging and which category is the easiest.
If every question is worth 1 point each, would you start with 2+2 or the super long word problem that requires extra brain power to solve?
It might feel weird to skip around and not go in order, but you need to save your brain power for the difficult questions last if you want the best results.
Even within each category, there will be difficult questions. You can skip the hard ones and complete the easy ones first.
4. Check your work once you're finished.
I can't tell you how many times I've skipped a bubble on the scantron and had to erase a ton of bubbles I filled in.
This is why circling your answers really helps.
Remember when you skip a hard question, you're also lightly marking it next to the number on the scantron. This light marking can be a little dash line that you can't ignore and will erase later once you solve the problem.
At the very end of the test once everything is bubbled in, you should go page by page to make sure what you circled in the test booklet is what you bubbled in.
At this point, don't even worry about re-reading the questions or answers, just focus on the circles and the bubbles.
If you have time left over, do this process one more time.
Remember:
1. How many questions?
2. Circle answers. Cross out wrong ones. When skipping a question, skip it on scantron too.
3. Prioritize from easy to hardest
4. Check work
