Celebrating Black Artists
When the average person is asked to imagine an “artist” they usually think of the dead white guys (Da Vinci, Van Gogh, Picasso, Warhol). This is because the art world, reflecting our larger society, has long excluded people of color and ignored their stories. That’s why one of my goals in Multimedia is to expose you to artists of color working today.
As you prepare to exit the class, I hope you have a very different understanding of art and artists than the old-fashioned picture I had in high school. And as people around the country fight to affirm that Black lives matter, I wanted to highlight some of the amazing Black artists we studied this year in Beginning and Advanced Multimedia.
These artists create complex portrayals of the Black experience that challenge simplistic stereotypes. They have helped me to think more critically about our past, present, and future. I hope you’ll take some time to look through these images, explore the artists’ wider bodies of work, and discover new Black artists. During this isolating time, I also hope this helps you to feel a greater connection to, and perhaps even outrage over, what’s happening in the world right now.
Thanks for looking! 🖤

Friday Check-In: Starting Our Final Project!
Hi everyone!
On Monday I will release a new video lesson going into greater detail about our final project (a group video documenting our lives during Covid-19).
If you want to get a head start on filming your part this weekend, feel free! Here are the directions, followed by my example clip.
I chose “Show us what comforts you”:
I chose to edit a few related clips together and use narration so that people would understand what they were seeing. You can respond to the show/tell prompts in whatever way makes sense to you.
Upload your clips to the google drive folder linked on discord, or email them directly to me.

Thursday thoughts...
Hi all! Hopefully you’ve had a chance to watch this week’s video lesson.
In the video, I try to remove some of the pressure of coming up with a great idea from scratch. Instead, I encourage you to incorporate play, parody, and randomness into your art-making. That way maybe art could actually be...fun?
As you think about “making art for fun” here’s another idea you can try:
Re-make a pre-existing artwork.
We’ve already talked about re-creating scenes from a movie like the artists of Shrek Retold.
You can also take someone else’s Scratch game and modify it using your own characters and backgrounds. I modified giraffecheesecake’s “dog hop, run and jump” to create a game about navigating the NYC subway in a wheelchair. My game isn’t meant to be fun, but you could make one that is!
And for my challenge submission this week, I borrowed the composition of a medieval artwork I saw in a book....
to create this drawing:
This is a strategy I use a lot! I find that having a pre-made structure for my scene allows me to focus more on fun details and storytelling.
