Field work is part of my job description as a FK Norway (Norwegian peace core) participant, at NWU in South Africa. We test the quality of surface and waste water to make sure it meets South African standards. Clean water is a limited resource in South Africa, and sufficient waste water treatment is extremely important. Through physical/chemical, microbiological and molecular analysis we get an idea on how polluted the water is. I screen the water for antibiotic resistant genes, which can at high levels indicate pollution. High levels of antibiotic resistant genes can have a negative effect on the environment as well as human and animal health. #fieldwork #watersampling #southafrica #fknorway #fredskorpset #lifeasascientist

Cathedral peak (3005 masl). Its a 12 hours hike they said. You need a guide they said. We made it to 2800. Couldnt climb the last 200 meters due to lack of time and equipment. But the 8.5 hours hike and 1300 vertical meters was totally worth it! Amazing mountains. Next time we will start earlier and climb the final peak. #hiking #climbing #cathedralpeak #drakensberg #southafrica #adventures (ved Drakensberg Cathedral Peak)

Dune 45 - Namib Desert
One of my best traveling moments - to watch the sunrise from top of the 170m high sand dune, Dune 45. We climbed the dune before sunrise with a full moon in the horizon. As the sun appeared the dunes were lightened up in pastel colours. Absolutely breathtaking!

Deadvlei - Namib Desert
Just a small hike between the highest dunes in the Namib desert and you will find Deadvlei - a white clay pan with dead camel thorn trees. Deadvlei is located near the salt pan of Sossusvlei. The clay pan was formed after rainfall, when the Tsauchab river flooded, creating temporary shallow pools where the abundance of water allowed camel thorn trees to grow. When the climate changed, drought hit the area, and sand dunes encroached on the pan, which blocked the river from the area. The trees died and the remaining skeletons of the trees are believed to be 600-700 years old.

Fish River Canyon - Namibia
Our first stop in Namibia was Hobas and the Fish River Canyon - the largest canyon in the southern hemisphere. We enjoyed a nice hike along the canyon while learning about the drought-resistant plants and watching the sunset.

Before hitting the road to Namibia we stopped for a few days in Cape Town to enjoy the view from top of Lions Head and the nice city vibe.
