Squarespace tutorials
After considering a digital book and/or website as my output for this project, I had a look at how to use Squarespace to create a website.
Linked below is a tutorial video I watched to better understand Squarespace and how I can use it to produce my final output.

Artist website inspiration - Rob Tennent
Mentioned earlier in my blog as an artist model, I love photographer Rob Tennent's website and how it displays his portfolio.
Rather than simply scrolling through, we click through the home page of Tennent's website, which reveals a new photo/layout after every click. Much like flipping through a book, Tennent's film photography stands out like a photo album through the design of his website.
The website can be found here:

Output ideas...
After debating how I'd like to present my work, I landed on these ideas:
InDesign digital book - a simple design and layout of my photographs in a digital document/book
Website - a more interactive digital display of photographs
Ideally I'd like to print my film photographs, enhancing the nostalgic feeling we often get from film. But for time, I am going to stick to a digital output.

Double exposure
After becoming curious, I asked about double exposure at Imageland when I got a roll of film developed. They taught me how I might do it and I did some more research online as well.
I would like to try this if I get a chance before the final hand in.
Here is an article that I read to support my learning about double exposure.

Developing film at home
This is an article I read about how to develop film from home. From this article I learned that black and white is definitely the easiest film type to develop, while colour can be much more difficult because of temperature sensitivity. I want to shoot colour film for this assignment, so for this reason I won't be developing from home unless I decide to experiment with black and white film. However, this article was still very helpful.

Some thoughts...
As I begin test shooting, I have been wondering about the chosen location as discussed in my proposal.
The Riverbank Lane was the original location I wanted to shoot, focusing solely on the life there and shooting documentary/street style photographs. However, even at the Riverbank Lane, I am drawn to the river: te awa o Waikato.
I have thought about expanding my location and shooting areas or 'spots' along the river, where people can meet, hang out, spend time together, while being at the riverside. The Riverbank Lane can still be included within this, however I want to shoot less in detail there and focus on what else the awa has to offer.
Although not 100% decided, I feel more connected with this idea and exploring the life of and around the awa.

Test shots on the AE-1
Here are some photos from my camera over the last few months as I test and develop.
As we can see, this camera captures light beautifully, which I definitely want to use to my advantage for my project.
From these shots, I can see that now that I understand the F stop of the camera, I now need to adjust the shutter speed as I shoot.
Shot of Fujifilm 200.

Past Project: Zine & Collage
Below are some images of a zine I created in 2023. Its pages are full of collages I made with some of my pictures.
This project will be great to refer back to towards the end of semester as I begin creating my output/s.

Research: Canon AE-1
youtube
For this project I want to shoot on film.
After using a point and shoot camera for a few years, I want to challenge myself for this assignment to use a manual film camera. I have a Canon AE-1 that I am learning to shoot with, so I will be referring to this video throughout the project to help.

Artist Model: Tia Ranginui
Ranginui is a photographer with a distinct style and composition. Through her work, she criticises the misrepresentation of Māori in New Zealand art and often speaks to and subverts the stereotypes Māori have been given in mainstream New Zealand culture and media.
Ranginui combines such messages with the stories of our tūpuna, such as patupaiarehe (fairies) for her work Tua o Tāwauwau.

Artist Model: Rob Tennent
Based in Sydney, Tennent is a film photographer who has a distinct style and way of storytelling.
With two photo books and lots of commercial work, Tennent has discussed the importance of queer storytelling and learning from one another. Through medium-format and candid shots, Tennent photographs warmth and life as he shares his and others' experiences.

Artist Model: David Cook
I explored David Cook's works as inspiration for this assignment.
Cook is a photographer currently based in Wellington. His works often document communities, particularly those in transition.
I particularly looked into Cook's works Jellicoe & Bledisloe for this assignment, where Cook documented the people and community of Hamilton East during the 90s as it transitioned from a state-housing neighbourhood into what it is now.
Below are some images from his series, as well as his website link.

naming my photos + video
URUROA
URUROA refers to the whakatauki:
"Kaua e mate wheke, mate ururoa."
This whakatauki discusses strength and power. Ururoa is the Maori name for hammerhead shark, who are strong fighters. I named my pieces after the hammerhead shark to represent the strength it takes to fight our fears as we feel disconnection from our identity.
