Something to consider about water and skincare

pH levels play a large factor in how well skincare products interact with your skin, and it’s not uncommon for people to use mild or low pH cleansers to adjust their skin during their routine. Skin generally thrives at a particular range right below neutral. But another factor that’s easy to overlook is the pH of the water used during skincare applications. Alkalized tap water is enough to shift the skin’s overall pH for a few hours, which may make it inefficient to use certain actives.

It’s easy to consider using distilled water instead, but instead of remaining at a neutral pH of 7, purified and distilled water still have a tendency to dissolve carbon dioxide from the air, making the water slightly more acidic.

pH testing strips also lose their accuracy over time. There sure are a lot of things to keep track of...

AM: Cleanser: CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser - I haven’t gotten a chance to personally test the pH of this, but I hear it’s mild (5.5). It also feels mild, and I haven’t had any problems using it since last year. It’s nice and straightforward, which I like. It also contains ceramides, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid, which are supposed to be great for your skin, provided you stay properly hydrated.

Essence: Leejiham Tea Tree 90 Essence (testing) - I grabbed this tea tree extract essence for its supposed sebum-managing and irritation-reducing properties. It glides on in a nice slick way and leaves my skin feeling decently moisturized.

Other: Radha Intensive Youth Eye Gel (testing) - I feel like the dark circles under my eyes give me an overall tired appearance, so I picked this up in hopes of reducing their severeness. The fact that this comes in gel form is great--I generally prefer the application of gels to creams.

Moisturizer: Clean & Clear Dual Action Moisturizer - Sticking a 0.5% salicylic acid solution into a moisturizer might not be a good idea, though it might be low enough to not even be effective anyway. I’ve had this since last year and I’m really just trying to get rid of the stuff so I can replace it with something better.

Sunscreen: Bioré UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence - After hearing that sunscreen is the cornerstone for a good skincare routine, I ordered a bottle of this incredibly popular sunscreen. It took several weeks before my order came in from Japan, but it was worth it. It smells very lightly of citrus (due to containing lemon, orange, and grapefruit essences), glides on easily, absorbs quickly, and feels light. And the big numbers and all the plus signs have to mean something, right?

PM: Oil cleanser: Innisfree Apple Juicy Cleansing Oil - I don’t use this very often unless I really need to clean off something heavier, like sunscreen, or if I want to deep clean my pores. I’m not sure if it actually deep cleans all that well though; I haven’t had much luck dislodging sebaceous filaments while using this.

Cleanser: CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser

BHA: CosRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid - One of the first products I bought, this chemical exfoliator was probably the key in evening out the texture of my skin over the past few months.

AHA: CosRX AHA 7 Whitehead Power Liquid - Another chemical exfoliator, I’m not quite sure if this AHA has had any particular effect on my skin.

Other: Radha Intensive Youth Eye Gel

Moisturizer/Repair: Mizon Black Snail All-in-One Cream - Another early purchase, I want to say it’s a moisturizer with the healing benefits of snail mucin. The thing is that I’m not all too sure about it’s moisturizing properties, which I heard works better than the Mizon’s standard snail cream. I do think it’s helped with scarring, acne, and redness though. I may replace it with a more efficient snail product once I finish it all.

Extra: Tonymoly Magic Food Banana Sleeping Pack - I wanted a little extra moisturizing power, so I bought this night cream. I definitely didn’t expect it to smell so damn good (like bright, ripe bananas with a slightly chemical note), and I’m always a little tempted to lick a bit of it to see if it tastes as good as it smells.

Jumping into Asian skincare

Earlier this year, I stumbled onto the subreddits Skincare Addiction and Asian Beauty while trying to figure out some solutions to my skin problems. I’m a light-skinned Asian guy who has been fighting acne since I was probably 13 years old, and I’ve acquired some terrible hygiene habits over the years, as well as lousy products and even lousier misuse of them. My face is one of the reasons why I’m insecure about my appearance; it’s oily and acne-prone, and I was falling down a spiral not knowing how to properly take care of it. In my exasperation at my foolishness, I figured enough was enough--it was time to get educated and start fixing years of damage.

Since this past March, I’ve started a routine involving several Asian skincare products. It’s probably the most money I’ve ever spent on this area within a short time, but I think it’s been worth it. My skin feels a lot better to the touch, and I don’t feel as oily as before, though this may just be due to more regular washing.

I’ll be filling this blog with more skincare posts as I figure things out with the products in my routine.
