I will say, the Abhorsen trilogy does have the best take on magical animal companions ever done. Like, they have they're own agendas, personal histories and conflicts. Their motives are often complex, obscure, and subject to change. Do they want to help you? Possibly. Are you dependent on their help? Definitely. But they are also surely using you, their human companion and supposed master, for their own purposes. And every once and while one of them makes a serious attempt at killing you or your friends...

the poor fish in the East Sea. First Shen Li sets them on fire and then Xingzhi freezes them. Lesson: leave the fish out of your romantic troubles.
#the legend of shen li#obviously#shen li did not set the ocean on fire for relationship reasons#and you could argue that xingzhi is having an existential crisis more than anything else

Average romantic convo between Shen Li and Xingzhi:
Shen Li: I'm still in love with you.
Xingzhi: I may or may not return that sentiment.
Shen Li: Problematic. If you do have feelings for me, I will help you to sever them. I can cut through anything (with my bloodthirsty spear).
Xingzhi: Many thanks. Btw, when I die, will you come visit my grave? It would be safe for us to be in a relationship if I were dead.
Shen Li: ...wtf man.
Xingzhi: Pretty please :( :(

Legend of Shen Li told from Xingzhi's point of view in the style of a thirteen year olds diary:
Day 1: On vacation and have found an injured chicken. Think I will look after it. Should be a smidge of fun.
Day 5: Chicken is in love with me. Oopsie. We parted ways.
Day 20: Got home from vacation. Found my chicken injured (again) and had to spend a couple days healing it. Who will look after my chicken to make sure it doesn't get hurt again?
Day 21: Chicken's fiance showed up. He'll take care of her.
Day 23: Chicken nearly got itself killed again. Fiance told me to my face that he can't take care of my chicken. Fuck. Have officially gotten to attached to my -- the chicken. Leaving now.
Day 24: Distance will make me forget her.
Day 25: News arrived that my chicken is dead. MY CHICKEN IS DEAD.
Day 31: My chicken is not dead! I found my chicken, badly injured. Memories between day 25 and day 31 are blurry. Froze a sea. Got hit by divine lighting. Wandered bleeding on the ice, calling for my dead chicken. Never going back to that. Since no one else will take care of my chicken, I will do it.
Day 33: Everyone, including my chicken, begging me to abandon my chicken because the world might end. Told them I would prefer the world ending than leaving my chicken again. This upset them and they seemed to think that their distress would sway me. Idk why when I literally told them I'd be okay with the end of the world.
Day 34: Chicken has decided to sacrifice itself to save the world. Oh well. Guess I'll die with it.
Day 50: No longer dead, resurrected! Have no powers and my chicken is finally safe. Will spend the rest of my days in pajamas. Bliss.

there's something uncomfortable about western millennials/gen z's deep obsession with watering Studio Ghibli movies down into "wholesome bean comfort flicks aesthetic uwu japan" when half of these people completely miss the point of these films and the complex nuanced topics they deal with, especially when it comes to post war Japan.
