So it’s a very personal bit of fanon to me that Jayce DID know about Viktor’s illness and DID hope Hextech would cure it, he just thought they’d have a lot more time than Viktor let on.

In my mind, Jayce thought after the Hexgates, they’d have all the attention and funding they need to expedite Hextech and expand it to other uses, like healing, but it would require massive amounts of resources and a proven proof of concept to ever get there. It’s why he’s so crushed and blindsided by the rapid advancement of Viktor’s illness and wasn’t acting as urgently during his actual decline: he thought they had at least another decade, that they were just getting started but they WOULD find a way.

One reason I sort of wish this was more canon was because it would create yet another Jayce/Singed parallel. Singed allowed all the misery brought about by Shimmer and even promoted it, in the hopes that its widespread use would equal testing and help him develop a path towards curing his daughter.

It would be one more parallel between Shimmer and Hextech as two sides of the same coin, just as Zaun and Piltover are: two technologies ultimately designed to cure a loved one, but put to other ultimately destructive uses in the hopes of accelerating their development. The personal anguish made into a societal catastrophe, two brilliant men actively deciding they no longer cared how others were harmed if it meant accelerating the cure.
