I'm so bad at doing character designs but I really wanna make my own Medicine Seller, one of the weaker 56. At least there's a clear template to them now that we have 2 reference points

Love all the random shit he pulls out of his box here. I can just imagine him packing in Juuyoku like “Will I need my octopus for this one? I might. I’ll put it in just in case.”
#mononoke#ri kusuriuri#I love rping as him and describing all the random stuff he has in his cabinet ehehehe

Okay but, I watched the Ayakashi Bakeneko arc again with a friend, joking that "haha, it's Medicine Seller's first day at a new job so he's different from the Mononoke series". And when we get to the point where the Bakeneko shows its Reason this is how he looks at it all
All of his joy and optimism, gone. He was actually lighthearted before shit hit the fan, flirting with Kayo and teasing Odajima. But now it's like this enlightened creature realizes for the first time what atrocities humans are actually capable of. It's just disgust and disappointment. No wonder he's so different in the Mononoke series, because now he has expectations for what his job is gonna be like

I've probably said this before, but it still bothers me that the Ayakashi Horror Tales DVD subtitles have Kusuriuri's response to "You're an interesting man" translated as "There's nothing remarkable about me" when what he actually says is more like "I'm not an extraordinary human." (Even someone who doesn't know Japanese that well can probably pick out 人間 in his dialogue.) Translating it that way turns what he says into a straight-up lie when, in reality, it's technically true, and the change makes his characterization different in a way that annoys me.
I think, like the fae, Kusuriuri would rather tell the truth creatively (or very creatively) than tell a baldfaced lie. If he absolutely had to lie to get the job done, he probably would, but I feel like he'd consider it somewhat beneath him. I've tried to remember if there are any times he does blatantly lie, and I can't think of any. I think it would be interesting (although I recognize it probably isn't really the case) if he were somehow prohibited from lying and had to work around it.
#fae rules are so so cool to me#puts them on all my favourite non human characters#(aka. all my favs ever#theyre all non human woops)#mononoke#ri kusuriuri#kon kusuriuri#they all should have this

Given that the Medicine Sellers are apparently strong enough to carry around 400+ lbs no sweat, you gotta believe they have to be extra careful when grabbing humans, knocking them over, or throwing them around not to do some serious damage. They would need to exert the bare minimum amount of force. When Ri Kusu and Kon Kusu kick over their respective grouchy samurai, they're probably actually being very gentle.
