Ossetian Notes
This project is presented in the form of photographs and text.
It is a reflection that leaves the reader free to interpret and understand.
In connection with the world pandemic I was lucky to go home to Ossetia, where I managed not only to once again appreciate the scale of the universal madness, but also to look into the past. As the history is cyclical, I turned to an ancient burial site in the town of Dargavs. This beautiful gorge is home to a “city of the dead”: people who knew they were sick went there to die. This place clearly echoed the quarantine situation around it. However, what we saw in everyday life was more like a farce…….
Since the truth is ours and cannot be “helped by good deeds”, a friend in Ossetia was imprisoned for exposing fake news.
A photograph of Dargavs in the form of an Instagram post is a protest. The protest against fake news, against the lies that enveloped not only our city but the whole world, it seems.
The phrase that the Dargavs dying people wrote: "look at us with love, we were like you, you will be like us," leaves more questions than answers. The fact that a person at the end of his or her life turns into a pile of bones is fair and understandable, but can we be the same as those people, can we not lose our human appearance? Can we freely look into the sky and choose when to live, and when to wait with a clear conscience of death?
The idea of sacrifice runs through the entire text. But why do we need sacrificesThe larger the question, the more ancient its essence. Therefore, I turned to the Ossetian epic about the Narts.
Shyrdon is an ambiguous character, on the one hand a playful and everyday-like figure, on the other hand an instigator possessing higher powers, a werewolf who was not accepted into Nart society.
Shyrdon's abduction of the Sacrificial Cow caused revenge, as a result of which he lost his family, but created a Musical Instrument from him. This is a very important moment in the epic, since music has become the redemption of his soul and will take him back to Nart society. However, Shyrdon himself subsequently destroys the Narts when he incites them to measure his strength with him.
Pride does not allow the Narts to stay alive, and they can commit mass suicide, so to speak. But their fame remains, and most importantly the music.
But in reality, things happen worse than in Fairy tails. The number of victims
increases, and the methods are all anti-human. So at the other side of the city of the dead, there is in Ossetia a parallel pole as the symbol of forced death: the city of Angels.
The cemetery in which the victims of the terrorist attack in Beslan are buried is surprisingly quiet and calm. On each grave there are statues of angels. They are all different, thoughtful, silent.
In the process of preparing the materials for this project, I read a lot about the tragedy of the captured school in September 2004. Since the reason of the first explosion at the school remained apparently unexplained, I enquired further and became familiar with the video materials of the trial of the terrorist Nurbalashi Kulaev. This is where you can feel the pain of Beslan mothers who came to school on September 1 with their children. The most interesting thing is that no one wanted the attacker to die, and even they did not want him to repent. They despised him.
Unfortunately, eternity is not enough for me to describe all the events and their causes.
The victims of the Beslan terrorist attack are children. Clean and innocent, who have become a symbol of the helplessness of adults, that is, the state, before a moral choice.
Thus, my projectis more about the victims. Only people remain victims, not only because they’ve got no choice, like children in Beslan, but also of their own free will, caused by inaction and lack of will as such.

Ossetian notes
Prt.1 CITY OF DEATH
In the 18th century, a plague came to Ossetia. From 200 thousand Ossetians there are 16 000 left.
There was nothing to oppose the plague. The doomed gathered with whole families and went to die in cities of the dead, in pre-prepared family crypts.

Note 3: Researcher V.F Miller in "Ossetian Etudes"
speaks of the beliefs associated with the perception of the afterlife by the Ossetians: "The Ossetians have a belief that the souls of some people leave their bodies while they sleep and take action.A trip to a mysterious area from which happiness, harvest and disease are brought, especially on the shelf... People who ride there on New Year's Eve, the so-called burkuzauta, sit on the best, strange horses that start coughing after the trip, or on people while they sleep, after which these people mourn" [7, pp. 454-455].
Prt.2 ANGELS
On 1 September 2004, terrorists took hostages in school No. 1 in Beslan. A total of 1,128 people were taken hostage, most of them children. On September 3, explosions took place in the school gym, the hostages started running out of the building and the school was stormed.

personal observations : on this day, September 1, 2004, I'm going to school for the first time, like these kids. But I don't remember anything except my mother crying at the TV all the time. My mother is also from Beslan city.
Ever since you drive from the airport to the city, the car slows down when the angels appear on the horizon. There are angel statues on every grave here.
Beslan children who survived and came out of the burning school are silent. In our courtyard of an apartment building in one summer there was a boy, someone's friend. Silent and wild-eyed. Beslan. He said he would never go to school again. I think he kept his word.
Prt.3 MUSIK . redemption .presentiment .reflection. FREEDOM
1.Redemption
In the Ossetian epos of Narts, the origin of dyuuuadæstænon fændır is associated with the mythological hero Syrdon, who became the first rhapsody of the Narts. According to the legends, Syrdon created this tool from the lives of his children, whom Hamyts cooked in a cauldron in revenge for the fact that Syrdon stole his cow.
When Syrdon came home, he began to take out the bones from the cauldron and was horrified to find out what had happened. He made a son of a harp from the humerus (bazyg) of the son, pulled twelve strings from the hair of his mother on it or lived his sons and sang to her sounds, sobbed about his grief.
dyuuuadæstænon fændır in the epic is a symbol of the Union of the earthly with the divine. The story of Syrdon is the story of a father who grieves for his lost children, the story of a man who in remorse and pain showed the purity and height of his soul, forever immortalizing the fandyr he created. And his music-music-sorrow, music-purification.
The creation of Sound turned out to be a saving act for him: “The crying of Syrdon and his playing the harp shocked even the harsh Narts. They forgave him all his past deeds and accepted into their midst as an equal person. ”
The ability to create is probably what distinguishes a person.
2/presentiment
A prophetic gift, intuition - that is what geniuses really differ in, you can meet where there is waiting in the air.
And a child, a girl of 11 years, a month before the terrorist attack in Beslan writes a poem.
I'll go over there, over there.
Where everything is and where everything can be
I'm tired of waiting any longer,
It's just not possible!
It's all happened.
And not sooner or later.
Because-- forever,
Because it's so complicated.
I've got a ticket to heaven.
And it's going to get there soon.
On the first flight, I can do it.
It'll be a little easier...

Reflection. FREEDOM
21st century plague coronavirus is trying to equalize people. But not everyone agrees with the rules.One of my acquaintances in my childhood, a singer, was so captured and so moved by the music that his heart shone like a hundred suns. He turned around and felt the need to share this heat, otherwise he could burn himself. And along with music, he began to help his people. However, not everyone liked his desire to make the world a little better. His fire burned too brightly and prevented the greedy and cowardly. A simple person needs a hero. BUT this is not a fairy tale but life, so for another five years you will not see my friend. BUTprison is not an obstacle if a hundred suns in his heart burn. And flush up even more. Freedom to Vadim Cheldiev!
Prt.4 The death of the NARTS!
I bring to your attention one of the myths of the Nart epic.
ГИБЕЛЬ НАРТОВ
All their lives Narts have been valiant in battles. They broke the strength of many rapists, and there was no one to measure for their strength. Sirdon asked the Narts why they should not measure their strength with God. On the advice of Shyrdon, they began to ignore God, so that he would appear to them for dialogue. And the God sent them a swallow asking why they thought he offended them.
- Why should we discuss! - said Narts. - This case has long been discussed. We served God for a long time, but he never even appeared to us. Now let him come out against us, let him measure his strength with us.
Uryzmag passed everything to the swallow.
A swallow flew away, appeared to God and handed him the words of the Narts.
God again sent a swallow:
“Come back again and tell them: if I master you, then what do you want: that I completely uproot your clan or still leave you bad offspring?”
Once again, a swallow flew to the sledges, told them the words of God. The sleds looked at each other and said:
- If he wants to eradicate our family, then let it completely eradicate.
Some unreasonable ones spoke:
- What to be without offspring, it is better to at least have bad offspring.
And then Uryzmag said:
- Than to leave bad offspring, it is better to remain completely without offspring. Why do we need eternal life? We do not need eternal life. May he give us eternal glory.
And all the sleds agreed with what Uryzmag said. Then God was angry with them, sent Uastirdzhi against them, and cursed Uastirdzhi:
- Let your one-day labor give you no more than one bag of grains.
And so it was. And how many kopecks of bread will not be threshed by narts per day, but more than one bag of grains does not work. But the narts were smart, they thought about it and began to grind in a day only one fading, which was out of seven sheaves. From every seven sheaves, they began to receive one bag per day, and from each sheaf ten bags.
And as before, their life passed in satiety.
God found out about this trick, once again cursed them, and their fields remained eternally green in the sunlight, and they became mature and fit for harvest only at night.
When the narts came out during the day, the bread was all green. Then they tried to reap at night. But as soon as they approached the cornfield, immediately mature bread turned green.
Narts again on the trick. They put huts near their fields and in the evening they went there, armed with bows and arrows. They put on bifurcated tips on the arrows and fired arrows at night on ripe bread. They cut ears with bifurcated tips - and these ears remained ripe. Now, when the narts were grinding bread, they did not separate the stems from the grains, and they ground all together.
So they lived another year. And then they said to each other:
- Well, what are we doing? After all, we ourselves agreed to God: it is better to die with glory than to lead an inglorious long life. Then each of them dug a grave for himself and rushed into it. Thus came the end of the glorious narts.
Prt.5 Do not close your eyes
We feel hundreds of looks on ourselves for life. In this whirlpool of life, we encounter each other's views. And the moments in which nothing is pronounced, but is said through the eyes, are the most intimate and truthful.
«Look at us with a loving look. We were just like you and you will be just like us»
this inscription was made in Dargavs in the city of the dead.
to look with a loving eye means the same as blazing suns in the heart.

For this work the starting point was a research on the assimilation of words. I collected words in lists, structured by their first and second letters. I included into this collection all words that I could think of (no matter which language).
I started working with these words in different ways, as writing, as music / making a song, and finally on this audio I uploaded here. In this one I am using a sequence of words which all have the letter k as initial. On the one hand I morph these words up to the point where there is no linguistic meaning anymore, but only the sound of a voice (marked as deconstructed in the structure sketch). On the other hand I learned to speak the words in reverse, and then also deconstructed them more and more as sound. Additionally I copied these two layers of audio (one with the words that are not reversed, one with the words that are analogically reversed) and reversed them digitally. These are the ones you can hear at the beginning of the track. Towards the middle the piece slowly changes into the two original audio files which were not digitally reversed.

Ex limes is Latin and means beyond the limits. It is inspired by the notion of Ex-Voto (beyond the vow), which are objects offered in thanksgiving for a vow granted (by a god), and also objects with supernatural beliefs, often used in pagan rites.
I think beliefs were born out of fear, and I’m afraid of the dark.
