Russian commander killed in sandstorm ambush in Mali

Russian commander killed in sandstorm ambush in Mali
A commander in a Russian mercenary group has been killed in Mali following an attack by rebel fighters during a sandstorm, the group said. The military regime in the West African state had turned to the notorious Wagner group in 2021, seeking support in fighting jihadist and separatist forces. On Monday the Russian outfit - which has now morphed into a group named Africa Corps - said it had joined Mali's military in "fierce battles" against separatist rebels and jihadist militants last week. However, the separatists launched a major attack, killing an estimated 20 to 50 mercenaries, sources close to Africa Corps told the BBC.
Similarly, several Russian military bloggers reported that at least 20 were killed in the ambush near the north-eastern town of ................

The American Consul General in Ghana, Elliot Fertik, has revealed that the number of Ghanaian visa applications the United States Embassy receives has tripled since 2019.

The breastfeeding athletes driving Olympic change
“I cried a lot on the bus ride to the Olympic village. I was just watching videos of my baby and looking at her pictures. Then I got there, and I just couldn’t sleep without her.”
When marathon runner Aliphine Tuliamuk headed off to the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, one thing was clear: she was not going to travel without her six-month-old daughter Zoe.
The unique set-up of the Games came in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the marathon held in the northern Japanese city of Sapporo.
It meant Tuliamuk could be with her family, except on a distressing first night when she stayed at the athletes' village in Tokyo, where children were banned.
As a result, she was separated from her baby, whom she was breastfeeding.
“The first time I ever slept without Zoe was in the village. Zoe and my .............................

Kenya rolls out poison in bid to cull a million crows

Kenya rolls out poison in bid to cull a million crows
"Invasive alien birds" sounds like the strapline to a scary Hollywood blockbuster, but for the people of coastal Kenya, it is not a matter of fiction.
The authorities there are so worried about the nuisance created by Indian house crows that they have begun the process of culling a million of them.
They have not targeted humans, as in the Alfred Hitchcock horror film The Birds, but these ones have for decades caused widespread disruption by preying on wildlife, raiding tourist areas, and attacking poultry farms.
Poison is now being used in the towns of Watamu and Malindi to kill the first tranche of the ruthless sub-species.
This ambitious poisoning campaign is aimed at halting the crows’ advance towards the capital, Nairobi.
The birds, known on the coast as "kunguru" or "kurabu," originated from India and other parts of Asia, often spreading elsewhere by travelling on ........................
