Task 3: Social Media

Narrative - Photographic Year

This was an interesting year as it was struck by an unexpected global pandemic. There were lockdowns that took place worldwide that ended up limiting our movements to avoid increasing the risk of a virus spreading out of control. Luckily despite our movements being limited, I was able to capture wonderful pictures throughout the year while people were at home. The apartment (documentary) picture was taken when the lockdown was implemented, the abstract and still-life photos were taken when the lockdown was eased. Photography is amazing as even in the wildest of times there are opportunities to capture the times with a camera.

Day in the Life

South Hills

I had a nice photo walk on a partly sunny day in March at an area that is very quiet and a place not many people are aware of. This place is called South Hills which is in Johannesburg South.

To cater for the growing population, new buildings had to be built which meant what was once an open space in the Johannesburg area is now a residential or business area. South Hills is a new suburb located in a hilly part of Johannesburg South. Few years ago, it was an empty hill with nothing but a road and a silver ball which is a water tank but recently it has become a place for affordable housing and new housing units are still under construction.

Before the national roads like the N12 or N17 became the closest highways. The main road was Rifle Range Road where the water tank sits was the major road as this area used to be the outskirts of Johannesburg as the area surrounding South Hills had not existed back then.

I was walking around this area to be amazed at this natural wonder because not many people speak about this area, its quiet and offers one of the best views of Johannesburg. This area to me is wonderful but at the same time its natural beauty is doomed.

South Hills is a residential area with potentially hosting new life there. This field’s days are numbered as it is only a matter of time as South Hills becomes a full suburban area. (258)
