Hashtags and Algorithms on Instagram

Firstly what is an algorithm and why does it matter?

The Instagram algorithm is designed as "a set of rules and signals that rank content on the platform: across users' feeds, the Explore Page, post feeds, etc. The algorithm analyses every piece of content posted to the network, taking metadata, hashtags, and engagement metrics into account"

The reason it matters so much, is the algorithm is responsible for how many people your photographs will reach online. It can be manipulated in your favour if you use tools such as analytics, trending topics and hashtags.

So what is a hashtag?

Hashtags are known as the # symbol, and are used by social media websites to categorise work and show to the right consumers accordingly.

What's the best amount of hashtags to use?

Well that depends on what my goal is with my photographs. If my priority in my photography is reach, then a study by Sprout Social suggests the ideal amount of hashtags for a brand or business to use is around 1-3, much less than I was expecting.

However, if my goal is to achieve the most engagement, then the ideal amount is 7-15, with 9 being the most successful.

What kind of hashtags to use?

Try to keep hashtags as relevant as possible, this means the algorithm will more likely pick up your posts. I mostly tag my posts with things like #photographystudent #canonphotographer and #gigphotography (or sometimes #ipswichgigphotography). These are a mix of niche, but also popular enough that people will stumble across my images on their explore pages.

You can also make personalised hashtags, like I've done for my page called #rhackettvisual. Although niche, it categorises your work into one place and sorts them by popularity. This can be really useful for analysis your work.

I also made a hashtag for my degree project. Although this won't be picked up by the algorithm, it's useful as an account that shares a lot of varied content. It means that if my viewers wanted to see just photographs related to my degree, they could click my degree tag to filter out the unrelated photos such as the Gig photography

my first self portrait on film 🤕 I took about 100 test shots on my digital camera before committing to taking these three exposures. Over covid I started doing mostly self portraits. Not being able to see myself through the viewfinder and get the poses/angles/focus *perfect* is stressful enough… but not being able to get immediate feedback on the film camera like I can with my digital is even more daunting.
