The ridge narrows ……
The deeper footprints are from earlier in the week. We leave hardly a mark on the Snow, just the tooth prints of the crampons.

Day 6 - An Casteal
Distance - 7.3 miles. Height gain - 2,713 ft.
Adversity - 5, strong, bitterly cold wind higher up.
Final day. The forecast had improved from yesterday and showed a good amount of sun, but also - 4 to - 6 on the tops with the wind gusting to 40 mph - was going to be cold.
To maximise our chances of being cloud free decide to go for a lower, but still Munro, walk - An Casteal. Lucy, needing to do some lesson planning stays behind in the cottage, A and I are out of the door by 9 am. A 15 min drive brings us to the car park (old bit of the A82) for 9.15. The is a large group of 30 to 60 year olds from a van which says Caerphilly on the side who head off 10 mins before us, but we have caught them after the first mile, before we leave the track and head off up to the ridge. We can see 2 people ahead of us just getting onto the ridge.
Last 200 ft onto the ridge we opt to do on snow which has frozen solid. Crampons on and ice axes out it is akin to walking up tarmac, just on a 1 in 2 slope.
Once on the ridge the Snow has largely gone for the next half mile, so crampons off. Then back on as we climb towards the summit. By now we are walking into the wind which quickly becomes bitter/cutting, despite the climbing. So we keep walking. A short section of reasonably narrow ridge and a couple of steps made more interesting by the wind buffet, but no real difficulty and we are on the top at 995 m.
We have met one person coming down as we climbed, no sign of the other so presumably they have walked on.
We look at the ridge leading round to Beinn a Chroin, which looks fine, but the last 200 ft onto the top of Beinn a Chroin is rocky and very steep and whilst it would be fine in summer looks to be beyond me in the current conditions. So we happily turn our back to the wind and retrace out steps. By this time the group from Caerphilly are just appearing onto the ridge and so are about an hour behind us!
We drop quickly off the snowfield and stop in the shelter to have our lunch. After a leisurely lunch looking across to Ben Dohrain and Ben Lui, we set off down the hill and finally cross with the others - some looking cold and a bit grumpy given their slow pace.
Final session with crampons to get us off the ridge down the steep snow (with signs of others having glissaded off earlier in the week with the soft snow - not today!!!) and we are back at the car by 2.30. Home for tea, crumpets and a cottage tidy before supper at the Real Food Cafe in Tyndrum.
We have neighbours now in the cottage next door. But they do not appear to have been out today despite the lovely conditions (at least low down) and judging by the number of bottles on their window sill, they are probably not planning to go very far!
Back home tomorrow after a very good week of winter walking. 5 Munro’s, 4 new ones for me. Very varied conditions from very deep new snow, clear sun to dense cloud (difficult!), deep settled snow ideal for glissading to the hard packed and frozen snow of today which is so easy to walk on, provided you have crampons of course.

Day 5 - Rest day (yes, really)
Woke with an aching body, very relieved to see the forecast is still for cold, strong winds, cloud and mist on the tops. Good moment for a rest day!
A not really understanding the concept of a rest day opts for a mountain bike ride (eco miles). Lucy and I opt for a trip across the Corran Ferry to Dorlin. We notch up a golden eagle at the top of Glencoe (A also sees one, quite possibly the same one).
Timed our arrival at the ferry perfectly and a quick easy journey to Acharacle tucked in behind a Golf R doing all the work. Cottage looks to be having work done, with a chimney liner going in - wood burner? Sit on the castle island for 45 mins having lunch and then walk down the Silver Walk, looking for otters. Curlew, oystercatchers, goldeneye, mergansers, ravens, hooded crows and shell duck, but no otters. Decide not to go over the top, but to walk back to the castle to maximise otter prospects. As we come onto the beach Lucy spots a tell tell tail just of the castle rocks - otter! We go back to the island to find it just in front of us, but sadly it spots us and swims across to Riska island. But still a good view.
Back to the car (seems odd not to be going into the cottage for tea with everyone) and back to the ferry and this cottage. Large group of deer by the Buachaille car park at the top of Glencoe.
Forecast for tomorrow a little better, so plan is to do An Casteal and Beinn a Chroin just south of Crianlarich.
