Meet the Murd Comics Collapsible Convention Cart! (Dubbed Dolly Carton!)

Take one furniture dolly, one swivel handle, both by Haul Master. Add a scrap of 1x4 and two packs of D-ring hangers (8 pieces).

The dolly’s rated for 1000 pounds, though the swivel handle is maxed at 650. Not that it matters much, 650 pounds of comics and art... is a lot of art! The loaded image above is under 150.

The installation of the handle is fairly straight forward, which is great, because the instructions are pathetic. If you go for this setup, make sure you set the handle far enough forward, so as to not interfere with the dynamics of the swiveling handle. When attaching the clip for putting the handle in the “storage position,” you may find it helpful to slip a small bolt into the clip to push the arms apart, allowing the screw to be driven straight.

The D-ring hangers are originally intended for large picture frames. My intent was to use actual D-rings mounted with... something. That “something” was a problem. But, the folks at Ace (the helpful place) recommended these, and I agreed. We’re not mountain climbing, nor hanging, so it should all be good. These will be used to secure loads with rope... or bungees, straps, gum, w/e.

The center board is a scrap bit from the shop down the way. The bottom center photo depicts holes that are not matched at the opposite end... somebody got over zealous with the pilot holes... oops. The bottom right is proof of measure twice, cut once. Or drill once. Y’know.

Our hand trucks will definitely stay in service; small shows require far fewer accoutrements and the smaller venues aren’t always a great place for trundling monstrosities of material... stuff. But schlepping our goods up hills or several blocks or both will no be a thing of the past. Pretty sure these DIY carts will be all the rage in the next year... or not. But we’ll enjoy it!
