“It’s T-H-E-R-E not T-H-E-I-R" Suga said leaning over Daichi’s shoulder to look at his English homework.
“Shit, you’re right,” Daichi cursed as he corrected his spelling. “How are you so much better than me at English? I’m just trying to get the grammar correct and you’re catching spelling?”
“I’m not that great, it’s just a really common spelling mistake so I try to check for it.” Suga returned to his own homework and was about to begin proofreading his English answers when Daichi interrupted.
“You’re so much better than me at everything. English, literature, history, science, I know you’re getting top marks.”
“Mmm what can I say? It’s hard being a genius” Suga teased. Daichi chuckled and nudged Suga with his elbow.
“Don’t let it go to your head now!”
“I kid! I’m really not as smart as you think I am. You’re kicking my ass in math right now, and I’m only good at science when we’re talking about the broad conceptual stuff, chemistry can go to hell,” Suga scooted back from the folding table they had set up in his bedroom and leaned back onto the soft rug on the floor. “Besides, I’m good at school but you’re better than me at literally everything else”
Daichi turned to look at his friend lying on the ground, his hazel eyes staring at the ceiling. Suga's silver hair splayed out around his head like a halo making him look absolutely angelic. Even without his hair halo Daichi thought he looked like an angel.
-----
He remembered the day he met Suga, just 5 months prior on the first day of his first year of high school. Daichi had gotten a little bit lost in the new building which was so much larger than his junior high. He made it on time but just barely.
“Ah last but not least, Sawamura Daichi?” asked the teacher.
“Yes sensei,” Daichi replied with a bow
In that seat Daichi learned that it wasn’t just the sunlight behind him that made Suga glow. His kindness was palpable, and his laugh made Daichi feel sometimes like they were the only people in the room. He was thrilled when he learned that Suga was also joining the volleyball club, since then the two of them had been inseparable.
“You may take your seat” He motioned to the last remaining empty chair. The desks were grouped in pairs and his desk partner was sitting in the seat closer to the window. Sunlight streamed in from behind his partner encasing the boy in a bright glow. When Daichi met his eyes, his desk partner flashed him the biggest and most genuine smile he had ever seen. He made his way to the desk and set his bag on the floor before sliding into his seat.
“Hi, I’m Sugawara Koushi, or Suga if you’d like”, the boy Daichi now knew as Suga greeted him.
-----
“What do you mean?” Daichi asked his friend on the floor. Suga's tone turned from the lighthearted joking of before to something more serious.
“I don’t know, you’re just better at the actually important things like talking to people and making friends. You and Asahi are my only friends, and you know like everyone in the whole school,” Suga covered his face with his hands. “And you talk to our upperclassmen so easily, I get so intimidated by them. You’re cool and confident and so much better than me at volleyball!”
“Hey, Suga” Daichi pulled Suga's hands from his face and held them in his lap, an action that may have been too intimate had Suga not been his best friend. “First of all, I’m not better than you at volleyball, you’re a brilliant setter. Second, I’m not as confident as you think I am. Remember you were the one who was all friendly and talkative the first day of school.” Suga pulled his hands back from Daichi’s lap and clasped them on his own chest. Suddenly the absence of Suga's hands was the only thing he could feel in his.
“Well yeah ‘cause you were the last one there and I felt bad dumbass” Suga laughed
“Hey!” Daichi ruffled Suga's soft grey hair. “You made it less embarrassing, if you hadn’t been friendly right away, I would have just sat there and cringed at myself over and over”
“So I was your savior, your prince in shining school uniform?” Suga teased.
“I’m serious Suga” Daichi said, resting his hand on the floor just close enough to feel the warmth radiating from his friend but not close enough to touch. He stared out Suga’s bedroom window while he spoke, “You might not be friends with everyone, but the people you are friends with...you make them feel really special. You’re a good friend,” He turned to look at Suga to find the boy already looking at him. His hazel eyes soft and full of care. “You’re my best friend.”
“You’re my best friend too, Daichi” Suga said staring up at him. The expression on his face was soft and sweet and made something stir in Daichi’s stomach. His greatest impulse in that moment was to lean forward and give Suga a kiss on the cheek, and he didn’t know why.
