"Get a bandana. More versatile, you can wear it however you want, or obscure your identity for... privacy reasons."
Ree knew exactly what she was talking about but for 'legal reasons' this was 'a joke'.

“I wish I had a champion-branded hat for my championship, but like … let’s be honest here. My hair looks awful in a hat.”

"If I was going to ask you to adopt, I would have just asked. I'm not one to foist little creatures at anyone who can't handle it. It's not good for the little menaces to my skin."
At least her arm was healing, and the menaces were cute.
"I meant what I said about your skills. No catch attached: you're very skilled, know how to handle yourself, care a lot for those who need it. Plus you're a specialist of one of the most notorious types to train next to dragons. Even our Elite Four Karen knows your name."
Compliments sure but honest observations. There weren't any catches in it.
"Would you want me to take a look at your Noibat?"
"From my personal experience, I confidently think you could do just fine training a Deino. A lot of dark type methodology translates over pretty well. Your skill and natural charisma wouldn't make it too difficult."
She says, covered in bite marks. From seven babies. Maybe not seven baby dragons, but still. Shay does this for a reason.
"Respect for knowing it's not an everyone thing."

❝ mhh ... DRAGON-TYPES have always been ... a lil' DIFFICULT for me to handle, honestly. ❞
❝ doesn't mean i dislike 'em, that's not the issue. they're just PRETTY TOUGH to train, y' know ... dragon tamers kinda deserve their reputation. ❞

That being said, if Shay does tell you some vulnerable things, then that's a sign she trusts you nearly completely. It might not be mutual, but her being honest is her biggest tell for trust. She hates hiding things from people she trusts and cares about, even if it's agonizing to talk about.
Shay's relationship with being vulnerable is the metaphor of a wounded and abused beast: try to force it, and there are teeth, claws, and regression into the shell. It is pain she is not prepared to handle if it goes wrong. Its why there is the bitchy, standoffish demeanour and her being critical in observing everyone.
It's the want to be honest that ties into her being okay with being vulnerable once a significant amount of trust is established. Honesty is her biggest trait. Even if its telling someone she has feelings for them, she won't tell them until she has built up enough mental preparation to deal with likely rejection and potentially losing that person as a friend forever.
She is very much growing past her wounds of vulnerabilities being abused and taken advantage of, but it is slow. She is aware of this. This does give her insight for like-minded individuals, and them being vulnerable with her is a huge aign of trust. She has been there. She won't pity you or judge you for it. Shay knows how hard it is.

The sooner she can find adoptions for these Deino, the better.
Problem is she can't just adopt them out to any person willy nilly.

"They can be - ow - stay here." She's on the phone, speakerphone to be exact.
Which is made all the more obvious when her mother, Yura, belts out from across the room:
"You're part of the family dumbass, you can come over whenever you want! Been that way for years! Don't you give me that crap about me bein' okay with it, I always am! Been gone so long that you forgot?"
Shay just stops speaking for the moment, and let's that sink in.
"You heard Mom." She chuckles. "Better get here within the hour."
"Oton, can you come over for like... a week? These baby Deino won't sleep without me and I can't risk losing another arm function. Vio already feels bad about it."

" sure can. they've only recently hatched, right? they'll be at their most vulnerable at the moment until they hone their senses. " he remembers when nexus' mate had her first kits and how difficult it was in comparison to the other dragons, but he's glad he's gotten quite a bit of experience with it now.
" did you want them kept at the sanctuary or did you want to transport them here? I don't mind staying over if your mom is okay with it. "

⠀ponchik waddles on over, wrapping his fins around shay's legs.⠀he loves purple mama, too.
There was a familiar soft bump, and then pressure around both her legs. Well now she couldn't move. Looking down there is Ponchik! It brings her a smile, as she pets his head, then manages to wiggle downwards and sit on the ground, at the Cetoddle's level.
"Hey sweet baby boy.~" She coos at him, giving him a return hug and picking him up just a tad.
"I love you too. We're gonna go get snow cones again later."
Spoiled baby!

Shay, what dragon-types would you recommend for beginner, intermediate and expert tamers to raise?
"I want to preface this by saying dragon types are not a Pokemon you casually train. You need to be attentive, empathetic, and most of all very, VERY patient. They are social in their own different ways and have particular needs that if not met, they will leave.
"For beginners, I would recommend Applin or Noibat. Applin know how to be naturally self-sufficient and don't require as much protein until they evolve. Same for Noibat. Noibat have their own natural hunting instinct, and you can apply baby feline play practices to them. Noibat do make a lot of sounds and noises to perfect their echolocation. You can feed them mostly fruit and nuts but do give them some meats. Applin are also incredibly sugar fiends, so its necessary for them to have a pound of sugar a week while they grow.
"The less proper your meals are for them, the more independent they become, but also they may just up and leave. Applin and Noibat are more forgiving than other dragons because of how social they are. Swablu also make great starting dragons; they are very social, love to relax with you, and love to clean. Just be prepared for some white hairs. Swablu and Altaria saliva have a natural bleaching agent in it that helps keep their fluff and feathers pristine white. They love to groom their trainers as a sign of affection.
"Intermediate suggestion goes to Druddigon, Dratini, and Cyclizar. Druddigon don't evolve, and are very observant and perceptive. Their biggest needs is heat, and hunting stimulation. They love to chase. Especially when it's food time. If they stay too cold for too long, you will get them sick. Muscle atrophy, weak, flaking scales and sluggish movement are just some of the issues you can have. They are dependent on a lot of sunlight to function. the diet requirements aren't strict for Druddigon but they need a large variety of food.
"Dratini are the most commonplace dragon starter in Blackthorn, but aren't for any child. Dratini are social, and naturally curious and kind. That's part of the reason they get poached. They love warmth and will sneak into every sleeve, sock and pant leg you have. They also shed a lot. Their diets need a lot of oily and fatty foods, such as fish to keep their scales and skin healthy. It also helps them shed. They do require a lot of water in the beginning, but Dragonair learn to regulate their fluids a lot better.
"Cyclizar, like Druddigon, doesn't evolve and have been around Paldean people for centuries. They are very used to people, but their needs are why they aren't good for beginners: they need stimulation, exercise and enrichment. Cyclizar are the embodiment of dragon zoomies. If they want to go somewhere, they will go, and will drag you with them. They have high sugar and protein diets to upkeep all that energy. They are prone to mental health issues if neglected, or left alone. At least what's what my Paldean studies and experts I've talked to there have mentioned.
"Expert level is anything under the pseudo-legend category that I haven't already mentioned. Other than that, specifically Axew, Bagon, and Tatsugiri.
"Axew are growing their tusks. They are going to be using them on everything. Your furniture, walls, and basement foundations are not safe. It's worse as a Fraxure, and as a Haxorus, that's a dragon with a glaive on it's face. They need a fuck ton of calcium as they grow, and eat a lot to get their armor dense. If they get angry you have to deal with a weaponized beast flailing shark weaponry everywhere. Early development of dealing with emotions is fucking important, unless you feel like losing limbs.
"Bagon is similar, but it has a need to fly. You need to watch it because despite it having a hard head, an understimulated Bagon can give itself concussions from falling too far. They are not immune to gravity. You need to love and support it's dreams of flying because it's up to you to help it evolve to get there. Especially if they evolve into a Shelgon. They don't have the best spacial awareness because they are in a pseudo cocoon. Do NOT stick anything inside or you are losing fingers.
"Now, why Tatsugiri for experts? Tatsugiri live in symbiosis with Dondozo. If not, then in large groups of other Tatsugiri. they are smart bastards. You need to be on par with being their Dondozo. They are not going to listen to you if they think they are smarter than you. They are smart enough to survive in many aquatic environments. They are smart enough to figure out basic tools and open doors. They can be incredibly critical of you, if you don't imprint on them from a young age.
"Speaking of, if you imprint on a dragon type at a young age, you have a head start. If you imprint on a dragon at a young age and you do everything in your power to fuck that up? Congrats! You're now on a centuries long grudge list where they will cause if not revel in your imminent demise. I could literally go on about every dragon, dragon type and so on, but these are my recommendations from study and personal experience."
