"Heh good one kid, well puzzle making is the favorite past time and tradition of most monsters." He chuckles a bit as he says it though there is a bit of a confused air to his eyelights as he looks to the elevator. Hm... So Mettaton must have mucked things up in the CORE to prevent Frisk from leaving so easily. It also likely meant there might be traps along the way. Maybe he should just use a shortcut... But if there was to be a fight then he'd need to be as fresh as possible.
Hearing how Frisk isn't a fighter makes Sans smile more genuinely, "I can tell and that's a good thing." He then focuses more on what they say about the battle ahead and sighs, "well that's good at least... He'll still probably be broadcasting but at least we'll only have to worry about him." Not that it meant much at all. He's not met the robot personally but his brother does love watching his shows for whatever reason so he knew the other was dramatic. When Frisk mentions how he wants their soul the skeleton looks down, painfully aware that he was aiding against the very goal monsters were hoping for. It was easy to imagine how angry many would get.
Tumblr media
"Can't really imagine anything that Alphys built as being malfunctioning honestly. She's the best at tech stuff aside from the previous Royal Scientist that I've seen." It was said with sureness because it was true, he really hasn't met anyone who could best her now a days. However instead of focusing on that he hums in thought at what they say. A normal fight for a monster could also entail being a puzzle. Their questions make him pause but he shrugs a bit, "aim's pretty good but my dodging is better. Just don't ask me to juggle on top of all that yeah?" It was a dumb joke but he was trying to lighten the mood. For now he gestures for them to follow him and he heads towards a more concealed doorway, punching in a code as he does to open the door.
"I know a shortcut through here. Just uh, just don't touch anything alright? You might be in for a shock." Was this an employee only path, maybe, but it was also the most direct route to the end of the area.
"This place is full of puzzles, right to the CORE, huh?" they chuckle a bit as they enter the CORE. Seems Alphys statement still held up, the elevator was down and the crowd surrounding it didn't seem happy about the fact.
Hm, right should probably text here that they are here now. Frisk goes to do just that, pausing as they probably think on Sans' question. Truthfully they're not one hundred percent sure what to expect from the upcoming battle ahead of them. "Eh, that's fine I'm not a fighter at all."
And despite how irksome Mettaton could be, they still didn't want to actually hurt the guy. The human's attention shifts to the right slightly, a slightly soured expression. Chara in typical fashion suggests a more violent option that the human didn't care for. But they turn back to Sans fairly quickly.
Tumblr media
"Well as far as I can tell this should just be a normal battle, not another one of his wacky segments so maybe we have less of his antics to begin with," hopefully anyway, they're almost tempted to ask how good Sans is at defusing bombs just in case. "He's pretty hellbent on the whole 'getting my soul' as anyone else is here, Alphys says he's malfunctioning but honestly I don't think that's the entire story."
Muffet mentioning that someone was willing to pay an extremely large sum of money to anyone that captured their soul....Frisk wouldn't make any assumptions but wouldn't put it past Mettaton to rely on underhanded methods like that.
"Haven't quite figured out how to talk him out of it and unlike Undyne running away isn't much of an option." hypothetically Sans could distract Mettaton while Frisk made their way to the capital but they didn't like that idea, it'd basically just be leaving the skeleton to deal with the robot on his own and even then they doubt that even with a distraction it'd be easy to get through.
That's not even mentioning Asgore but one fight to think about at a time.
"....how good is your aim honestly?" the shooting segments of those battles were the ones that Frisk struggled the most at. They don't want to attack Mettaton any or have Sans do so on their behalf but someone to at least help them defend against the onslaught would help. "Better question, how good are you at dodging?"
It's asked with some concern, they'll reset in a heart beat if worse comes to worst but they'd rather not to begin with. It was one thing if they died, they don't wish the same thing to happen to any of their friends.

Zossaux chuckles at the eugief's apparent joy at being in the Regalia model. Hell, he could even hear Alphinaud laugh as well after the initial surprise of the lift off. Sure the boy had been in plenty of airships but this was an all together different kind of way to travel. "Oh I'm sure if you told him the details of these gauntlet runners he'd have a field day trying to create his own."
Hearing that from Alphinaud has the warrior chuckling imagining it to be true but then he remembers one of the employees under Cid's employ. She hated how her boss was so easily side tracked from the requests and jobs Cid has that he didn't necessarily want to add to that list with a gauntlet runner. For now though he focuses upon getting them back to Ishgard. It takes some time but eventually he does manage to get them back to the Skysteel Manufactory entrance to land and let them out before he dismisses the mount.
"Alright, I believe he'll be at the airship field still working on that job. Ah, and we should let you attune to the aetheryte if we can sir Heismay. It makes traveling much faster and easier." Though now he can't remember if the eugief had attuned to the Moghome aetheryte either. Perhaps another trip in the Regalia is due then. Regardless he leads the way to the airship landing where they do indeed find Cid, Biggs and Wedge. "Cid, it's good to see you once again." Alphinaud greets with a small wave.
Heismay watches as the vehicle began to drive and then take off not long after. To say it reminded him of the skyrunner was an understatement.
Tumblr media
"Ooohohoho! I've ridden in transportation like this before, though it was quite a far bit larger. We ride in vehicles called Gauntlet Runners, and a friend of mine named Neuras made a variant called a Sky Runner. I believe he would be ecstatic to learn about this personal sized version." The eugief laughs, feeling like a bit like it was home again.
He would have to talk to Cid about potentially showing him some blueprints for these devices. Neuras would love a new invention to work on.

Honestly Zossaux was glad that Alphinaud had thought to have Estinien wait here for their return. After all, his remaining would see that the city is safer. He nodded to the dragoon before summoning forth the mount that he gotten from Cid based upon that one traveler from another world. It was a strange contraption to everyone but Zossaux, as there was no other mode of transport available like it.
"Hop in everyone. We'll have to take the slightly longer way back since I don't recall Heismay attuning to the aetheryte of Ishgard. Don't worry, we'll be back soon." It was one of his faster mounts he had after all. The duskwight hopped into the driver seat while Alphinaud finally recovered from his shock and confusion, taking a seat behind his friend. "You never fail to surprise me my friend. I'm assuming this is also one of Cid's inventions?"
Zossaux nodded and looked to Heismay, "our friend and ally Cid is the world's top most inventor. He's the one who created this vehicle based upon a lost traveler's version. I would just use this to get to Nidhogg but there's no way it would get past that storm alone." He smiled and once everyone is in he starts to drive off before he kicks off from the ground and the whole ride transforms, sprouting wings as the tires rotate to create the thrust needed to keep them up, as well as the back opening up to give them the momentum to go forward. For Heismay it was similar to the skyrunner he's used to.
Then they're off towards Ishgard, the land below them flying past fairly quickly as they flew with all haste back to the snowy city to find the inventor.
Tumblr media
Estinien gazed out upon the floating island. He knew even he couldn't reach it easily, likely the reason why Nidhogg is there. The dragon likely knew he was here to finish him off, so he hid away. How vexing. He looks to Alphinaud when he courses out a plan of action. "I can do that easily. Hurry all the same." He replies.
Tumblr media
"Cid? Airship? You'll have to explain on the way. I am unfamiliar with both of those." He admits. Though, judging by the name airship, he assumed it was some sort of aerial transportation device. Perhaps akin to the skyrunner?

Alphinaud himself was rather worried when the dragon roared at Heismay's brazen words. How could he not be when it could have enraged the great wyrm and end up in disaster. Thankfully though Hraesvelgr takes it in stride and leaves before things escalate further. The teen sighs in relief and shakes his head when Heismay speaks up again, "true as that may be it was still reckless."
Zossaux also had been anxious over the interaction but had enough faith in the eugief to know what he was doing. When it's all said and done he shakes his head a bit. "Full glad am I that you could overcome such an obstacle." He then nods to Estinien before looking to Ysayle and frowning. It was true that such a statement might cause her own faith to be shaken to the core.
Tumblr media
"... You couldn't have known the full truth before this... Please take heart that you thought you were doing the right thing." He then leaves with the others to head to Nidhogg's hiding place. "Ah... We... May have a problem here." He says while looking at the floating Aery surrounded by a raging tempest. Sure, he had a mount that could fly them up there but the storm was the problem.
It was Alphinaud who got an idea almost immediately, "of course! We should go see Cid and get his help with his airship and the corrupted crystal. Estinien, can you keep watch here so that Nidhogg remains focused upon his eye?"
Heismay is unphased by the roar and simply stands his ground as Hraesvelgr berates him. He chuckles lightly at calling the eugief a preacher and how such a thing would get him killed. He waits until the dragon leaves before he speaks again.
Tumblr media
"Well, he is not wrong. It's just that I've already experienced the aforementioned "attempt at killing me for my preaching." My allies and I overcame it all the same." He says before turning to the others. "Regardless, we must make our way to Nidhogg. Sir Estinien, may you guide our way forward here?" He asks the Azure Dragoon.
"Indeed. With his eye, Nidhogg cannot hide from me. Come." He says turning to leave.
"...I need time...to think about my actions. About my methods." Ysalye says solemnly.

The dragon knew that Ysayle had called forth a primal in the name of his beloved Shiva but also knew that her true spirit rested within himself. It was his sole comfort over these many long years. So imagine his utter shock when the eugief speaks up about grief.
There was another mighty roar at the smaller man but he does not attack nor flee. Instead he just huffs, "you speak from experience then little one... You know the grief of losing one you hold dear and then dealing with it... I can see it in yours eyes. So you would know then that your mission is a futile one. There is no way to console the grieving, rage fueled Nidhogg. His mind has long been stuck upon but one thing... Seeing Ishgard suffer and burn in the name of our sister." He growls lowly before adding on, "and you are wrong about one thing, I do not grieve for my beloved Shiva as she has never left me. You should take care of who you preach to next little traveler, it may get you killed." With that said he turns as if to leave.
Tumblr media
Zossaux then speaks up, "so you will do naught to help nor stop us then...? Whatever may happen next, you could live with it?" That does stop the dragon and he merely huffs, "his war has long since become the stuff of madness." With that the dragon lifts into air and leaves them all be. The warrior sighs and shakes his head, this was one battle that he could not win but, "it seems that if we are to stop Nidhogg it will be alone. But at least he will not be stopping us either..."
Ysalye, for her part, was unaware of the full story herself. She had hoped her channeling of Shiva would bring her closer to understanding. But was it all delusion on her end? Did she truly understand so little?
"Tis not Shiva, that stays your claws." Suddenly, the eugief speaks up. Stepping forward, putting himself before the great dragon.
Tumblr media
"It is grief. I can see it in your eye. You grieve for the loss of not only your beloved Shiva but also for your sister. Ages pass, time marches on, but you, and perhaps even your brother, are no closer to fulfilling your grief. You try to hide yourself away from both others and your own emotions. While your brother buries himself in what he calls righteous revenge. But in truth, you both simply are unable to move on from your grief." Heismay speaks, from what sounds like a place of experience.
Estinien is admittedly surprised by the gumption from the older man. It was as if he didn't let his fear or concern stop him from calling it out as he saw it. The question was, would Heismay's words find purchase?

It was Zossaux and Ysayle alone that seemed unsurprised by the dragon's way of communication. After all, the pair had been seen and spoken to before by great dragons. The warrior of light can feel as Midgardsormr nears while hidden away, merely watching and judging the interaction.
Alphinaud is surprised with Heismay at the speech, he was fascinated and wanted to know more but he doesn't dare bring that scientific curiosity up now. This was not the time after all.
Hraesvelgr merely gives a low growl at what Ysayle says, "you would have me stop my brood brother his revenge for what your people started? How he punishes your kind for their greed and treachery that broke the peace first? You, child, who knows how this started would still ask my aide?" He asks directing the question at Ysayle.
Alphinaud looks confused by what he says and speaks up, "my apologies great Hraesvelgr but how did this all start? We know precious little of the truth and we seek only to end this as peacefully as possible." He flinches when the dragon roars at them, but does his best to stand his ground. He does not though that Zossaux had tensed at that roar, ready to defend everyone if necessary.
"Nidhogg seeks revenge for our brood sister Ratatoskr whom your ancestors killed in cold blood just to steal her eyes and power. They then tried the same with Nidhogg when he came to avenge her. I can already tell that dragoon there has his stolen eye. Knowing these things you would ask me to stop this righteous rage? A dragon never dies and never forgets... It is only the spirit of my beloved Shiva that keeps me from joining him in his rage and rancor."
Heismay nodded at Zossaux's response. There was not much more to say, truly, he could only hope whatever they did would allow a peaceful resolution. He would awaken with the others when the morning broke. And followed them closely as they all made their way to the spot where they would call upon Hraesvelgr. Then the dragon spoke and even he was somewhat surprised by it.
Tumblr media
"...To take their own tongue, and make the meaning known in my mind...impressive." Heismay admits. But now he goes silent, as he can't help but feel there is something in the dragon's one good eye that is familiar to him.
"Great Hraesvelgr, we beseech your aid. This war has claimed countless lives on both sides. Please, help us in bringing your brother to his senses." Ysalye pleads.

The warrior of light could agree there. He couldn't understand how Nidhogg could stand to send so many young and lesser dragons to fight against Ishgard just to die in most cases. Surely that would weight heavily upon the great wyrm's conscious? It even resulted in the death of his consort!
Tumblr media
"One would think it would..." is Zossaux's response to how the death should weigh on the great wyrm's. However he sighs and nods when the other stands and speaks getting rest. It was something he greatly needed given how little he seems to get while on missions... So rarely ever if he admitted it. At least, rarely ever the amount he should be getting. Thankfully he falls asleep quickly and wakes up when the others get up to continue their quest forward.
Once they all arrive to the meeting place of Hraesvelgr and Zossaux sounds the horn, the party is soon met by the great wyrm himself. Heismay would be able to tell that this dragon is immensely powerful but not made from magla like the ones he's used to. As he speaks in draconian everyone would be able to understand the words in their minds. "Whom comes to disturb me...? Leave mortals, you are not welcome here."
Heismay hummed as he listened to the dark skinned elezen explain what little he knew of the conflict. So, a dragon's call here results in them being forced into their will? What a tragic and sad life they must live if they have been stuck in this war for as long as the others have.
Tumblr media
"I cannot tell what drives Nidhogg down this path either. Yet, surely the loss of their children and their children's children must be weighing on both him and his brother. They might only prolong this conflict out of empty anger. Whatever the case, though, we will know soon." He muses aloud before standing up. "Come. We should get some rest. Come dawn, this war must end, one way or another."
Eventually, morning breaks, and the path forward is clear ahead.

The duskwight chuckles softly at what Heismay says and nods, "agreed, he's got much potential and shouldn't let that mistake haunt him for forever... I just know he needs more people in his corner so he can believe in himself once more." Zossaux smiles as he finishes while looking to the sleeping teen. Alphinaud was a strong young man and he was constantly impressed by him.
Tumblr media
When Heismay speaks up again and asks about the dragons he sighs and shakes his head. "I cannot say with certainty but... I heard from a reliable source that when a great wyrm roars the others have to answer that call. I doubt that the Ishgardians know this though and if they did there is little they can do but defend themselves from the onslaught to survive. It honestly seems that they are born hating dragons with how long this has been persisting." Zossaux shakes his head sadly, long silver braid moving as he did.
"Nidhogg is one such wyrm and he craves above all else to see Ishgard suffer and die with an unending rage... I... I doubt entreating his brood brother Hraesvelgar will yield results but perhaps we can finally learn the truth to the cause of such hatred." The warrior can feel the aether near him moving as Midgardsormr moves closer to them though still hidden away from all others.
"I want this cycle of hate to end, for both sides' sake... I feel that 'the sons have paid for their father's mistakes' already and now only the children suffer." He says the quote that Midgardsormr himself said to him during that fateful meeting.
Heismay hummed with a soft smile. "I am glad to help. He is a fine lad, intelligent and wise beyond his years. Whatever mistakes he made, they will not be able to undo what he can offer." The eugief replies nodding. He softly gazed around, seeing the dragons avoiding them in the night.
Tumblr media
"Zossaux, humor me a moment. Do the dragons truly wish to fight your kind?" He asks. "It does not appear any of them truly desire a confrontation. Not that they wish to forge a connection, but they simply want to be left to their own devices." He continues, before looking up at the Elezen. "Do they truly have a choice? Are they fighting with their own hearts and minds?" He finishes with.
Zossaux recalls one time, how it was said to be Nidhog's roar that began the assault on Ishgard. When a greater wyrm roars, the lessers are made to fall in line.

Thankfully it seems like Alphinaud is comforted as he chats with the others over dinner before they all settle down to sleep. It seems that he has a slightly harder time doing so but he does fall asleep soon enough. Zossaux smiles at the sight of everyone resting and then to Heismay when he sits by him.
Tumblr media
"Of course, I don't mind at all. I'm glad for the company honestly... It makes the time pass and doubles our safety." He gives a quiet chuckle and looks out past the fire's light. "... Thank you for humoring Alphinaud... He recently lost his confidence and way... I think this has helped him more than I could alone."
Heismay chuckles. He doubts they'll have any need of this much, but it was a good experience to share with Alphinaud. He hopes his words provide comfort to the young man, and that he will be able to find headway with his father. For the night watch, the eugief joins in with Zossaux.
Tumblr media
"I hope you do not mind me joining your night watch. I do not sleep much, after all." He tells the tall elezen.

Sadly there was no way for the young elezen to know that Heismay came from an entirely different world altogether so he was going based off what he's heard and knows. It was strange that there was a land that they didn't know yet but he also knew the world was vast. For now he focuses back on what the other says and can feel himself blush a bit. "I can only hope that's true..." He did look up to his father quite a bit after all. However he says no more until they get back and smiles at everyone. "I daresay we likely got enough tinder for two fires."
Tumblr media
Zossaux chuckled and gave a little wave in greeting back, "you were gone a fair while so I'm sure you did." He didn't look at all worried since he knew the pair could care for themselves. Plus he figured with how curious the teen was there had been chatting. The warrior of light takes the proffered wood from Alphinaud and begins to make a fire with practiced ease so he can work on cooking up something for them to eat before they all settle down to either sleep or stand watch. Tomorrow promised to be a long day after all. Despite his own exhaustion the duskwight seemed to be settled in to do first watch, not quite ready to sleep yet.
Heismay does not believe aether and magla to be similar at all. He knows what magla is and its point of origin. And from what little he's seen and heard of aether so far, it's radically different. He does not have any specific knowledge of it, but his gut feeling tells him they are not that similar. Nonetheless, he will have time to entertain these thoughts another day.
Tumblr media
"Hah, indeed. But, should you desire to know more when we end this war, I am more than willing to share. I can tell you are a fine young man, and I believe if your father could be truthful, I have the feeling he'd be proud of you." He replies as they make their way back.

It wasn't a strange thing for the teen that Sharlyan practiced non-intervention. After all, it's where he was from, born and raised surrounded by the greatest fount of knowledge in the world. Then his grandfather had shaken everything they'd known up by leaving with the desire to help others with this knowledge. He didn't think he'd follow suit but here he was.
As Heismay explained a few things Alphinaud gained a thoughtful look. "... I see. It's true that the names are completely foreign to me. Perhaps however that magla and aether are in essence the same thing in different forms as I can't imagine you being able to use your "Archetypes" without it?" The teen was trying to understand these differences with the little info he has. It was like trying to solve a puzzle while missing pieces. "Thank you for indulging me sir Heismay. It's always a treat to learn more about your comrades and friends." He smiles as he says that before adjusting the hold he has on the tinder in his arms. "Perhaps we should be getting back hm? The others are like to wonder what happened to us."
So, the whole of the nation practiced non-intervention? What a strange policy, though perhaps that is simply his experience talking. He had been part of a group, a kingdom, that had decided to help no matter what. So the idea of non-intervention for a whole people was practically foreign to him, especially as he is now.
Tumblr media
Then Alphinaud noted how strange he was. "An astute observation. I suppose I can tell you some things. I hail from a land, not on any map of yours. Where instead of aether, we use magla. My homeland is the United Kingdom of Euchronia. A nation and people so far away, I doubt the name would be familiar to anyone here." He explains.

The teen sighed softly as Heismay speaks again and shakes his head, "I'm sure he does, at least outside of Sharlyan policies. The country as a whole is more about preserving knowledge and history than using it to help others. They remain wholly neutral in all things." Alphinaud shook his head again with a soft sigh. "Ever since starting this journey it feels like a rift has opened that I fear shall never mend." That last bit was muttered but he knew the eugief would hear it.
When Heismay gives the go ahead the young elezen took on a more serious expression, "what land do you actually hail from...? I understand if you cannot say but I know there's more than meets the eye here. I may not have Zossaux's Echo or powers of observation but I know something is odd." He looks to Heismay evenly wondering if he'd get the truth or not. Of course he would not push for it should the other wish to remain secretive about it.
Ah, a scholar, and one who seems to prefer reclusiveness. A strange choice, and he can't help but wonder what causes them to choose this path? Surely, there must be a reason why his father chooses the path of abstinence.
Tumblr media
"Your father likely has his reasons. Perhaps he waits for the proper time to act. Or there might other reasons holding him back. I can not do more than guess, however, since I do not know him personally." He replies before hearing the young man wishing to ask him something. "Of course, lad. What do you wish to know?" He returns the question.

It was true the Alphinaud and the others were curious over Heismay's whole deal but they knew better than to ask or pry. There was always a time and place and right now wasn't it. So Alphinaud focused more on collecting the tinder needed and nods to Heismay when he confirms that they had collected enough. Then at the question he pauses and looks down.
"No I can't say we have... He doesn't approve of such activities and barely allowed us to come to Eorzea to begin with. He'd much rather see us use our schooling and talents back in Sharlyan where we have a higher standing but... we wanted to see the land that our grandfather died to save." The teen sighed and shook his head. "What good is knowledge if it cannot be used to help others? I'm sure he would disapprove of all that I've done since coming here but I aim to continue working to help others in any way I can."
The young Scion looked determined at that before a question pops into his own mind, "might I ask a question in turn sir Heismay?"
Oh how the old man wished he could be more open about his life, but it would be odd to share such personal details. Especially when it was because said details involved his son's tragic death. For now though, he walks around with Alphinaud, gathering wood and tinder for the camp.
Tumblr media
"There, we should have enough between the two of us. A bit extra in case we need it." He says to Alphinaud. "Have you and your father never done things like this before together?" He asks the Elezen as they begin making their way back. The lad does strike him as more of a noble bearing, but that doesn't mean much. After all, Strohl's parents would often put the lad through manual labor to teach him to understanding the common folk.

Alphinaud blinks at the way Heismay shakes his head as if trying to clear it. He couldn't hope to understand what was going through the eugief's mind at that moment so he instead focuses upon what the other says after. He smiles at this and nods, "I can use what you taught me before." The teen follows after the other, taking care not to draw the ire of anything around that would wish them harm. It was nice to use a new skill he'd learned to help others after all.
Tumblr media
While the pair gather firewood the duskwight in the group smiles. He's glad that Alphinaud seems to have perked up during this mission. Of course there were tense moments but for the most part he feels that this has been good for the teen. After all, he still blamed himself largely for the missing Scions... No matter what he, Tataru, or their friend Haurchefant would tell him. Zossaux begins to dig through his inventory to gather up some cooking ingredients to make a simple meal for them all when the fire is made.
Heismay looked to Alphinaud, and in his mind he saw not the young elezen standing there, but his own son. So willing and wishing to be of help to his father. He shakes his head clear of these thoughts, trying to not grow too attached to him. The eugief was not of this world after all.
Tumblr media
"But of course, Alphinaud. I would welcome your assistance! Come, I recall seeing some branches of a tree not far from camp that should serve us." He tells him as he leads the way.

Heismay was not alone in his wonderings over the dragons lack of aggression. Sure Zossaux had taken care to help lead them to avoid them but certainly they would have attacked when noticed. Hm, perhaps their faith in Nidhogg was just that strong. Strange but he wasn't going to question it.
Once they reach the campsite and Heismay offers to go get the firewood Alphinaud smiles, "if you wouldn't mind company I'd like to help." After all the teen had been feeling rather useless lately. He wanted to prove that he could be of help, if only to gather something as simple as firewood.
Tumblr media
Zossaux gives Alphinaud a fond look, figuring that the teen was feeling less than stellar lately with everything happening. If Heismay denied the offer of help he would jump in and ask the boy for help with dinner instead. Surely that would help perk his friend back up.
Heismay nodded in understand, t'would be best if they made camp before long. The eugief follows along with the rest of the group, keeping ahead slightly to serve as scout. Thankfully, it seems the dragons are either less hostile up here, or more fearful. Or...was there some other reason as to why they do not all fight?
Either way, they set out a site to camp out at. All they needed was fire wood.
Tumblr media
"If you all wish, I could easily find the tinder necessary for our campfire tonight." He offers. One of the many benefits of night vision and sensitive hearing. Tasks like this are significantly safer for him to perform.
