Trans woman JoJo Striker shot and killed in Toledo, initially misgendered in media reports

Police found the body of JoJo Striker, 23, in an empty garage in Toledo, Ohio, on Feb. 8, WTOL reported.  Striker died of a single gunshot to her torso. Police do not currently have a suspect or motive for her death.

WTOL reported that Striker’s mother, Shanda Striker, believes the killing was a hate crime. “The police told us to leave it alone but that will never happen because I will always search for my son’s killer,” Striker told WTOL misgendering JoJo. “This is a hate crime and it needs to stop.”

Initial media reports misgendered Striker. On its Facebook page, Equality Toledo invited media to training workshops to educate them on better reporting practices. “We are saddened to hear of the murder of JoJo Striker,” Toledo wrote. 

“As a way to honor her life, this is a direct invitation to all media sources in the Toledo area to a workshop on how to appropriately report on the lives of the LGBT community, particularly our transgender siblings.”

Phaylen Fairchild, a Toledo-area transgender woman and advocate for the community, said in a phone interview that Striker’s death has shaken many of the community’s young transgender women, who already feel Toledo’s environment is extremely oppressive to trans women, especially trans women of color.  Read more (2/14/17 5:00 PM)

Antonio Martin -- just a few things

Unarmed, 18 year old black male shot in Berkeley, MO (near Ferguson where Mike Brown was shot), December 24 2014

Shot for fitting a description (between 5’3 and 6’7, black male, black hair) of a recent robbery

Eyewitnesses did not see a gun at the scene, pictures of the area show no gun until 3 hours after Antonio Martin was shot

Do you see this? Do you see how unbothered they are? Absolutely no sympathy for the mother as she cries aloud. They don’t see her pain and they’re standing right next to her. When Antonio Martin was shot, he was still breathing, he died right where he laid. His mother watched her son die before her. The cop didn’t call the medical unit. That’s all the evidence you need to realize these cops don’t care!! Shooting to wound isn’t something they practice. Shoot to kill is

the police and the media are going to try to portray antonio martin as an “adult” or a “grown man”, just like they did with mike brown. they were both only 18. they were teenagers. antonio martin was a senior in high school. mike brown was going to go start college a few days before his murder. these are kids

Already the media is making sure we know that Antonio Martin dropped out of school and that his mom was a teen when she had him. Fucking scum of the earth, media and pigs alike.

Another black person, Antonio Martin, was killed just hours ago, just two miles outside of Ferguson by a white cop. What we know so far is he was unarmed, he was at a gas station, the cop stopped him for “matching the description” of a suspect and then shot him for refusing to lie down on the ground.

Note that suspect descriptions are usually along the lines of “we’re looking for a black male between 18 and 42.”

watching my people get killed is heartbreaking. its Xmas eve, I’m sitting by the TV with tears in my eyes. Its just getting worse, there’s families out there with no sons there for xmas, diplomas never received, weddings and grandchildren never to be had. Moment of silence for those lost to cold hearts. Just a reminder that its only been two days and already two cops are once again not being indicted for illegally murdering unarmed and innocent black men for doing literally nothing.

So many parents have suffered in front of us this year. Their children have been burnt in Mexico, executed in the U.S, and massacred in Pakistan.

I cannot even begin to explain the feeling I get from simply seeing pictures of these people cry over losing what they loved the most. And yet there are people who couldn’t care less. And my feeling towards that is equally indescribable.

Tumblr is such a biased website. I’m done. Mike Brown dies (which was highly tragic and may be rest in peace) and the whole website explodes and now 132 teenagers are slaughtered in Pakistan and everyone is just sleeping
