Amidst the impressing power of technology in the social era, social media and technical skills are continually expanding to a wide range of positive and negative social impacts. While technology has improved people’s lifestyle, social media have also brought improvement of the individual’s sense of connectiveness. In this social era, media is considered as “information sources.” However, this must be given much concern. Considering that the Philippine society has a strong party system, social media can be used to expose diverse political issues which might be shadowed with partiality, favouring a political party and its beliefs. This impact can mislead the audience who do not bother to discern facts from false information. Much information is so easily and quickly available but it does not mean that all of them are worthwhile or even true.

This makes information literacy relevant. Knowing and understanding its significance will help the audience identify what is real. An information literate society can possess skills that can be used to evaluate information sources inorder to identify what is right and wrong. In the midst of social era, everybody especially the youth is becoming more active in communication. Using the media, many of the youth introduce strange languages, and they become susceptible to peer pressure, cyberbullying, and sending sexual images. These can make our society unhealthy if no action is taken. Information literacy is then timely. Young and old must be educated. It is not enough to read and hear information but each one must determine what trust he can give on the information. Today’s society needs to understand and adapt to the characteristics of the information age. To attain this, information literacy becomes an apt, inorder to contribute much for a healthy society.

The Good and the Bad: How Social Media Affected Me as a Gen Z Individual

The Philippine society is now grappled with great challenges more specifically in the outbreak of social media. The social media is grabbing the role of being the primary and rich source of information world-wide and eventually no one would like to take the back seat. Young and old choose to be active whether consequences may be good or bad. How can this affect the gen z individual? Honestly, I am one among many who use the social media in many aspects. Taking glimpses of the past, I feel that the birth of social media (as one of the technology advancements) has really made a difference in students’ lives. Because of it, the world would seem small since friends from far places can be brought closer to you. Views and current issues are accessible anytime. The benefits are tangible which effect the production of more quality outputs.

On the other hand, the downside of social media cannot be missed. The teens’ quality of sleep is distracted, hence, poor mental health is developed. The impulsive nature of the young gen may create negative consequences from posts exposing privacy concerns and the worst is when students pretend to make research but instead they make links to pornographic images. The young gen must then have focus, must know to discern good from bad, and set reasonable limits. Though it is true that one feels happier using Facebook, chatting and communicating with friends, this cannot outweigh the advantages of worldwide learning. Time management is important. Though technology can make life easier, the individual should not set aside media and information literacy because it is a strong defense against evil, helps keeps one’s direction in life, a citadel to lean on that tunes up every individual towards what is good and discard the bad.

Across the compressive force of advance technology, people now live differently. Social media is also taking its seat making everything happens in just a stone throw and push-button away.
Oftentimes the audience is simply wrapped blindly to this rapid revolution of changes. Literacy is then crucial. The fantastic views of the world, the streaming of the multi-colored games that arouse interest, making friends online and the thrill of cyberchatting, online merchandising become accessible with just a click and touch of gadgets. Is there an assurance of validity in all these encounters?

Assurance is vague. The media generously feed, the audience joyfully receives, but wait!  Shall every pinch be swallowed? Here is the great responsibility of an individual. Swallow what has been refined and beware of bit particles that need to be chewed. Be sensitive, always keep nourished to keep healthy ready to discern information from disinformation and be able to push out whatever unhealthy effects and pitfalls coming up with contradictions and oppositions. Impulsive people abuse and use the social media as exit of heightened emotions without thinking deeper problems come ahead. Media and information are fusions that work wonders to our social life as we live in an age of greater mobility. It wipes out traces of uncertainties and invalidities. An individual then has to be literate to realize what media and information can bring to the world and how the seat of responsibility is taken to search what is real. With its value, an individual is not prone to think wrong, do wrong but moves always for the greater.
