It's just dawning on me that Rachel and Leon's names are maybe intended to be further animal-name metaphors like a lot of Targent already has. Rachel, Hebrew name meaning "ewe", can serve to juxtapose Leon, a Greek name meaning "lion". Animal known for comfort and vulnerability vs animal often associated with pride and violence; without Rachel to anchor him, Leon became both of those things and more.
Something I realized a long time ago but never had a chance to mention is how Leon and Emmy's names can go together too. While the name Emmeline can have a lot of meanings, one of the common ones is something along the lines of bravery, a trait commonly associated with lions. I just think it's interesting.
