august 16, 1979 dolohov’s funeral. @heis-waldenmacnair
He didn’t want to be there. Then again no one ever wanted to be at a funeral for one of their friends. Cassius knew he should be sad. He knew he should be overwhelmed with shock and grief like many of the people around him were. But he just couldn’t feel that way. All he felt was relief, relief that he hadn’t received news of Augustus’s death. He was relieved that the man he loved was still alive and well. Glancing across the room, he saw Augustus making quiet conversation with some people he didn’t recognize. Normally, he would feel jealous and immediately go over to talk to him, but for today he was just happy to see him breathing.
Cassius shook his head to clear his thoughts before turning to find someone to talk to. The first person he caught sight of was Walden, standing near the back of the room. It had been a while since they last spoke, but the two of them had always been good at picking up their friendship and continuing forward like no time had passed. Sure, they saw each other at Death Eater meetings but those weren’t exactly social events. He walked up and leaned against the wall beside Walden, scanning the crowd of people as he spoke. “I wish it were under better circumstances, but it’s nice to actually have a chance to talk to you.”

expensive mistakes.
evening, august 27th, 1979 restaurant, wizarding london. @cassandraburke
Cassius hadn’t seen Cassandra since April. It may have only been a few months but it felt like decades. When she’d appeared back in the world, returned from wherever she had been, he sent her a simple owl:
I don’t like the way things were left between us. Meet me for dinner at that fancy restaurant our parents used to always drag us to? I’ll be there at seven on August 27th. I really hope to see you. -Cassius
Things had been insane in the time since he last saw her, but there were things they needed to discuss. The timing of her disappearance with Augustus’s release had always bothered Cassius. So many things weren’t settling in his mind with the situation. He didn’t know what Cassandra had done, but he didn’t believe it was anything good. Then again, who was he to complain? He had made a deal with her and she had promised to get Augustus back. She held up her end of the deal, regardless of whatever she had to do to make it happen.
Regardless, he still wanted to talk to her and he hadn’t lied in his letter when he said he didn’t like the way things had been left. So, there he sat, at a corner table as far from other customers as possible, hoping that would give them at least a bit of privacy. Now there was nothing for him to do but wait.

light up your wildest dreams.
august 17, 1979 Cassius's townhouse @avgvstvs
Timing had never been Cassius's strong suit, in fact it was probably one of the things he was the worst at. So it shouldn't have been surprising when he decided to pack a bag, grab Augustus, and leave for a spontaneous vacation as the wizarding world literally crumbled around them. Antonin's funeral had been the last straw for him. He needed a break, needed to clear his head. It had been months since anyone had gotten a peaceful moment away from all the fighting. Normally Cassius wouldn't bother taking a break, he'd just keep pushing through, but this wasn't for him. This was for Augustus.
Augustus had been through so much lately and, against all of Cassius's normal feelings, he couldn't stand to see the other man suffering. Both of them had been kidnapped, held captive, and tortured, and both of them had done their fair share of damage in return. Any single thing that they had been through was enough to drive anyone crazy, and yet here they still stood solid as marble. But even marble would eventually begin to crack under the pressure. Cassius hoped he could fix them. Sure, a small vacation wasn't going to miraculously make all their problems go away but at least it would give them time to breath and the ability to think clearly.
Cassius walked over to his desk and opened the drawer where he kept the sea shell that he used at a portkey to his family's vacation home. He turned to Augustus with a smile on his face for the first time in a long time. "Portkey is scheduled for a minute from now," he said as he held his hand out with the sea shell in it, signaling for Augustus to take his hand and hold the shell with him.

CHARLIE BARNES ♔ TWENTY-EIGHT ♔ PUREBLOOD ♔ AMERICAN ♔ NEUTRAL ♔
“How are you supposed to run away from things that are in your head?”
Aesthetic:
⊗ foggy forests ⊗ frigid breezes ⊗ dark alleys ⊗ hearing yelling on the other side of a wall ⊗ bass turned up too loud ⊗ waking up in a strangers bed ⊗ nose bleeds ⊗ bruises ⊗ lit cigarettes ⊗ hair falling in their eyes ⊗ watching the sunrise after not sleeping
Personality Traits:
✓ Light-Hearted ✓ Adventurous ✓ Adaptable ✓ Independent
✕ Hedonistic ✕ Faithless ✕ Selfish ✕ Abrasive
Character Description:
Charlie is a fairly simple man. A girl broke his heart and he left America and came to Europe to get as far from her as possible. He’s been backpacking across Europe for nearly two years, refusing to settle down anywhere for more than a few weeks. Sometimes he returns to towns he may have visited previously, but for the most part he tries to find new and more exciting locations. Places he can give into all of the temptation he hid from in America. He doesn’t have an end goal, he just wants to explore. Or maybe he’s afraid to settle down. Either way, he’s enjoying himself as he travels. He’s a wizard but he has very little to do with the politics of the wizarding world and if you ask his only response is gonna be: “I didn’t like the way MACUSA worked so why would I bother with the Ministry? I’m sure they’re the same.” For the most part he avoids the politics and he will not align himself with Death Eaters, Aversio, or the Order.
Cassius met Charlie in a bar one night and the two struck up a conversation. The more Charlie talked about spending his nights partying, doing anything and anyone he could, the more Cassius wanted to be able to do that too. Maybe kidnapping Charlie, stealing his identity, and keeping him in the basement wasn’t the best way to go about freeing himself from his social expectations, but he did it anyway. At least he keeps Charlie under a very strong hallucinogenic hex, as far as he’s concerned he’s still partying. All of this happened about two months before the death eaters took over the ministry, so Cassius is getting more use out of his undercover identity than he ever thought he would.
CHARLIE BARNES is portrayed by JASON RALPH and is the polyjuice persona of CASSIUS MULCIBER.

Character Description:
Haley grew up under stress, working herself as hard as possible. Her parents raised her never to quit even when her body was screaming and begging her to stop. Now an adult, she still doesn't know when to stop, doesn't know when to quit pushing herself. It used to be just a physical issue but over the years it has crept it's way into her mind as well. Sleeping more than four hours a night is a miracle and having time to relax is a pipe dream. Two years ago she was diagnosed with depression and bipolar disorder and since then her doctor has also added psychosis to the list of ongoing issues. Despite all of this she continues to force her way forward in life, accomplishing everything she puts her mind to. Her friends are wonderful and supportive, though many of them are long-distance they still find time to talk.

WHISPERS IN THE DARK: aurora & @mvlciber
“With a flick of his wrist, he locked her in place so she couldn’t go for her wand. “No snarky comments? I mean, at least brag about the fact that you knocked me on my ass,” he said with a laugh. He walked over to her and began pacing in tight circles around her, brushing his hand against her waist. He stopped standing behind her, his hands on her hips and whispered into her ear, “what should I do with you now?”

“I know you didn’t. I’m just…overreacting, I suppose,” he said in a softness he didn’t know he had in him. In a way, they were all in danger. It’s what being a Death Eater meant, but it was different this time. For Orion, it wasn’t how it use to be; everyone’s identity use to be a secret, but now it felt like everyday another Death Eater was being exposed. He wondered if that’s what happened to Augustus, if he got caught and the only way out was to become an informant of some kind. Orion didn’t want to believe it either. He didn’t want to think anyone in their ranks would do such a thing, but thinking that alone was naive and ignorant.
Then again, the only time Orion ever opened his mouth while at the mercy of Aversio was to spit more insults and to ask if that’s all they fucking got. How did Augustus handle that under the pressure of Aurors, of whoever had him alone in that room at the Ministry? Orion shook his head at both himself and Cassius, “No one will think you’re guilty by association just because you’re his friend. No matter what happens, especially if I have anything to say about it.” And he would have a lot to say about it if it ever came to that. Did Cassius know that? Orion hoped he did.
Orion liked to think that he has seen Cassius for all that he is, but never once has he heard him say that he was scared. Him? The man he would always want by his side in a fight? Orion couldn’t believe it; he tried to keep his face neutral, but the confused wrinkles on his forehead gave him away. He opened his mouth to say something, but it occurred to him that he didn’t know what to say. Instead, Orion watched the way Cassius balled his fists up, watched as he got angrier with each word. “Cassius…” he started, still unsure of where he was going with this. He’d never seen him like this before and if Orion was being honest, that scared him. He wanted to point out that only Augustus would be getting hurt, possibly even while he was proving his innocence, but Orion knew that wasn’t the right thing to say. “If he is innocent then he has nothing to fear, even now, even you.”
Orion watched him closely, knowing there was nothing he could do to calm him down. He had turned his head away for maybe a second, trying to organize his own thoughts, when he heard Cassius punch the wall. Orion was standing and stalking over to him before he knew it, eyes narrowed. This wasn’t like Cassius. The anger he was familiar with, but it wasn’t what he was use to seeing from him, and frankly, Orion wasn’t going to let him feel that way any longer. “No, you listen,” Orion roughly grabbed a hold of Cassius’ hand to observe what little damage there was before making eye contact with him. Despite his harsh actions, Orion spoke calmly for the younger man, “I don’t think you’re losing it and I don’t think you look like a maniac. You’re scared, maybe even a little confused. That’s normal. You said you’re angry– let me help you. What do you plan to do?”
I don’t think you’re losing it... let me help you. Orion’s words rang in Cassius’s mind. After the way he had just acted and the insanity of his actions, Orion was still willing to help. The more he thought about it the more it baffled him. Cassius always thought of their relationship as very surface level, not delving into deep emotional territory at all, but Orion’s actions tonight were making him think otherwise. He knew that Orion cared for him, but he was just now starting to realize how much he cared.
Lost in thought he finally realized that Orion had asked him a question. For the first time that day Cassius smiled. “What do I plan to do? Orion, this is me you’re talking to, I never have a plan.” It was true, he had no plan, no idea of what he could do. What he wanted to do was find out who held Augustus captive and tortured him. He wanted to find out who actually revealed the Death Eaters secrets. While he had inklings towards who may have been the informant, he didn’t feel nearly confident enough to share that. Especially considering he thought it was Cassandra and he knew how close Orion was to her. The last thing Cassius needed right now was to lose Orion’s trust by accusing someone he cared for.
He slid his hand from Orion’s grasp and examined it for himself. As he had suspected there were small tears in the skin on and around his knuckles. Though he could have healed it with magic, he didn’t particularly want to. It was a minor enough wound for him to leave alone so he walked over to the kitchen and grabbed the small box of bandages and potions he kept out of the cabinet. He quickly and haphazardly wrapped a bandage around his hand. As he spoke he leaned forward, resting his weight against his hands which now lay flat on the counter. “I feel so lost.” He wanted to think of something to say, something witty and more like his usual. However, the gravity of the situations unfolding in their world simply weighed too heavily in the air to be ignored. He felt like he was suffocating, like he was completely helpless....
No.
Cassius took a breath, thinking about what he needed to do. How has everything gotten so fucked up? It was a question he wouldn’t be able to answer anytime soon. He wasn’t going to let his mind delve into the depressing and nearly incapacitating thoughts it kept trying to drag him into. “What do you think I should do? And I understand if you don’t want to be involved in any of this. It’s not your cross to bear.” Of course he hoped Orion would help as he had said he would, he needed a strong and mentally stable person in his life right now, but it was hardly fair to ask the older man for help in a situation that had no effect on him. The outburst that Cassius had had moments ago, felt like hours with the speed his mind was moving at. And yet despite the rapidness of his thoughts, he still couldn’t come up with any solutions or answers.

( aurora )
If she wasn’t fed up with Cassius before, she was now, but she didn’t deign his antics with a response. He was just trying to throw her off and Aurora wasn’t going to let that happen. No, it just angered and motivated her to do more. Now she wouldn’t hold back. No more Mrs. Nice Aurora. Now she was going full dark, no stars. “Don’t worry doll, I can fix my aim.” She waited for his spell to hit her desk before she popped out from behind the desk and hit him square in the chest.
Having a little bit of an advantage, Aurora moved forward bombarding him with spell after spell. She would be getting out of here alive today and if Cassius didn’t, well then it really wouldn’t be a loss to the rest of the world. Somewhere though, Aurora lost her rhythm giving him the opportunity to gain some ground. Her wand went flying out of her hand, not anywhere within reach and for a moment Aurora’s blood went ice cold.
With a flick of his wrist, he locked her in place so she couldn’t go for her wand. “No snarky comments? I mean, at least brag about the fact that you knocked me on my ass,” he said with a laugh. He walked over to her and began pacing in tight circles around her, brushing his hand against her waist. He stopped standing behind her, his hands on her hips and whispered into her ear, “what should I do with you now?” Ideas flew through his head but all of them seemed dull at the moment. Finally a plan formed in his mind.
Cassius walked over to pick up her wand, twirling it between his fingers. “You won’t be needing this.” Pointing his own wand straight in the air, he cast a simple spell and watched as all light disappear from the corridor they were in. It wasn’t pitch dark, but it was damn close. “Alright, doll. I’m gonna release you and then we’ll see who fights better without their wand.” He moved to a corner of the room and released her from the spell, then he placed both their wands on a shelf he’d seen earlier.

Aurora could almost growl at him for calling her doll. Oh she absolutely detested pet names especially when they were used in a patronizing way. “Don’t worry, I’m not fragile like a doll. There’s plenty of fight in me Cassius Mulciber.” She hissed his name knowing that probably wouldn’t throw him off, but decided to give it a chance anyways. She knew who Cassius was. Only two years younger, Cassius was a quick-witted Slytherin who she currently had the upper hand on and she needed to keep it that way.
She needed to stay on the offense for now, but be ready to switch to defense at a moment’s notice. Easier said than done, but it was the only plan she had. That and finding some cover were important at the moment. “I’ll let you guess my name. It’s much more fun that way.” In a quick, rapid succession, she threw spell after spell at him. A jinx, then a curse and a jinx again. While the spells went flying from her wand, Aurora backed up to a desk that he been thrown into the hallway from one of the offices close by. She crouched behind the desk before sending another jinx his way.
“I like it when you say my name like that, makes me all tingly, could you say it again?” Cassius chuckled at the thought of what her face might look like under that mask. Damn, he wished he could see her facial expressions. They were probably hilarious. “Oooh, a guessing game. I do love a woman who knows how to play games,” he said winking at her. At this point he was almost glad she destroyed his mask, it was certainly making things more entertaining.
The spells she cast were expected. Cassius blocked them one after the other, laughing at how pathetically predictable this was. He spread his arms wide in a sweeping gesture. “You’re gonna have to aim better than that, doll.” However, his victory was short lived as a final spell hit him square in the chest. He was knocked onto his back several feet away from where he’d been. He threw a spell towards the side of the desk, getting to his feet as the spell flew towards it’s target.

( orion )
He didn’t know what he was expecting, not really. A dozen scenarios had crossed his mind while on his broom, then another dozen after he figured out how to rectify the first dozen. Cassius was…is…someone Orion wasn’t willing to let get hurt, no matter how much he knew he could take care of himself. Whatever he thought he was going to see when that door opened, it wasn’t this– Cassius looked just fine on the surface. Orion had barely heard Cassius speak, barely felt the handshake between them. Every bone in his body was relieved to see Cassius safe, but he wished the kid would have at least let that be known in his letter. Orion knew he was partially responsible for the rapid beating of his own heart and the quick fire of thoughts in his mind, but Cassius should’ve known what a letter like that would do to Orion. He almost felt mad, if it wasn’t for the defeated look in the young mans eyes.
“It’s…good to see you too,” Orion finally said as he stepped inside. He glanced around the house quickly, “I thought you were in danger.” There was no fire, no blood, or dead bodies. For a moment, Orion could relax. He watched Cassius with furrowed eyebrows as he took his time to take off his gloves, hang up his jacket, and lean his broom against a wall. Maybe he wasn’t in danger, but something was clearly wrong. He stood near the door as he watched Cassius for another few seconds, gathering his own thoughts as well, before following his footsteps and sitting down next to him, close enough so their knees knocked together.
Orion wasn’t sure what Cassius meant at first, but then it became all too clear. Augustus. Orion inhaled deeply, as silently as he could to not give his body’s reaction away, even though one of his hands made a fist without him realizing it. He felt like he could breathe again when he made eye contact with Cassius. “Yes, I’ve been told about Rookwood’s compliance,” Orion chose his words carefully and let his left hand find a place on top of Cassius’ knee. “But I trust you, Cassius, you and your judgement. If you think he’s innocent, he deserves a chance to defend himself and then the truth will come out.”
Cassius attempted to maintain eye contact with Orion but he couldn’t. “I didn’t mean to worry you,” words flew through his mind so quickly he couldn’t gather any to say. There were things Orion needed to know and deserved to know, but Cassius couldn’t make the words leave his mouth. He settled for saying the things he knew he could without burying himself in regrets. “I am in danger, though not directly. My relationship with Augustus has a target on my back and if he’s not proven innocent then people will think I’m guilty by association. No matter what anyone says I believe in his innocence, but for the first time in a long time I’m scared.” He coated his true feelings with mild lies. It’s not that he didn’t want Orion to know he loved Augustus, but something about the timing wasn’t right. He’d tell him soon, but not today.
“I’m scared for...” he trailed off, not knowing how to finish the sentence. He was scared for Augustus and himself, but he was also irrationally scared for Orion. Even if Orion stood up for Augustus, it wouldn’t change his standing among the Death Eaters, too many respected him to flip on him for that one decision. However, despite that fact Cassius still feared for the older man. “I don’t want anyone to get hurt because mudbloods and blood traitors decided they could frame an innocent pureblood for revealing information they clearly got somewhere else.” As he spoke he got angrier, his hands balling into fists in his lap.
Anger cleared his mind, helped him think, he needed to add fuel to that fire. He stood from the coach and began pacing back and forth. The angrier he made himself the less fear he felt. He wasn’t lost and confused in his own thoughts because his objective became infinitely clearer. He needed to protect Augustus by getting revenge on whoever framed him. Without really realizing he was doing it, Cassius turned and punched the wall, his hand going through the drywall. He sighed heavily before speaking. “Listen, I know you probably think I’m losing it right now, but I’m not. I just don’t know what I’m doing and I’m trying to sort through all my thoughts and I’m cycling between crippling fear and anger that actual motivates me to do something. So despite looking like a maniac I think I’m gonna use anger to my advantage right now.” He didn’t know if he was trying to convince himself or Orion but he just rolled with it and prayed the other man wouldn’t get up and walk out due to his crazy outburst.
