Oh yeah, I caved and bought the Kirby Licca-Chan doll, and she is just so precious! Pretty different from the dolls I tend to collect, but she scratches an itch I didn't even know I had. Definitely see more Liccas in my future...

Sylvia is a poured wax doll c. 1900-1920, attributed to the Pierotti dollmaking family of England

And she has… Been through it, as you can see

She's missing one hand, and it feels like her body underneath her (probably original) nurses outfit has fallen apart in places. My friend who's an expert on wax dolls guesses that the outfit was modified to hold her wax parts roughly in place when the cloth body deteriorated. Most noticeably, someone has covered her lower half with a stuffed stump of cotton that is not remotely big enough to make her look proportional. I can feel what remains of her upper legs underneath it, and I'm not really sure why they didn't just make a new cloth legs to attach to the old ones. But here we are

I intend to undertake restoring her to some degree – at the very least de-stumping her and giving her legs again, and preferably rebuilding her entire body so that she can be dressed and undressed (although her outfit is held on her body with extremely rusted old pins, so I'm guessing it was not actually made to come off – that same friend of mine has a Pierotti nurse doll in an almost identical costume, although she said it's very strange to see one with a luxury portrait head like Sylvia's in that particular outfit. Most of them were fine ladies. So maybe it's not original? It's certainly been on there for a long time regardless)

I will keep you updated on her journey. For now she is going to rest while I rest – and tomorrow I will pick up some needlenose pliers to get those damn pins out

look back month challenge, day 4: do you still have any toys from your childhood?

i don't. i didn't play with toys a lot or form deep bonds to them because all i wanted to do was craft. not much has changed there.

but i do have these novi stars customs i made as a gift for my kid self. when novi stars released in 2012 i was already an adult, but if they had existed in my childhood, i would have been obsessed. i've been super into scifi and Space Facts since i was tiny, and most of my art as a kid was comets and galaxies and colorful little aliens. so when i found out about the existence of novi stars, i had to get my hands on a few and customize them in a way i would have loved 20+ years ago. and also do now; i need to reuse that solar system headgear idea for a bjd.

No but legit I asked what the fiber content of something was and the guy didn’t know so he cut a chunk off and lit it on fire and felt the ashes and was like. Yeah this is mostly cotton with a lil bit of silk. And that was the moment I knew. This is it. This is the fabric store for me. Also that guy is marriage material. Not for me but damn some person is gonna be so happy with him.
