Alhaitham - ENTJ
I will be going into detail on why I think ENTJ is more appropriate than INTJ for Alhaitham.
โโญห.โ โหโก โโญห.โ โฎโ หโโญห.โ โหโก โโญห.โ โฎโ
โโญห.โย โหโก โโญห.โ โฎโ หโโญห.โย โหโก โโญห.โ โฎโ
Alhaitham is a character whose focus is on living a fulfilling, simple, life. He doesnโt care about external status, and even benefits from his label as an unsociable lunatic. He is unambitious, and is quite content to hand off his prestigious title of Grand Sage as fast as he can. His trailerโs message can be summarized to โthink more and act less, everything is connectedโ. These are the common talking points in favour of him being an INTJ. Letโs go over these โ I wonโt be addressing social cognition as itโs not included in this system.ย
โโญห.โย โหโก โโญห.โ โฎโ หโโญห.โย โหโก โโญห.โ โฎโ
โก Te is goal oriented, maximizing efficiency. Alhaitham has no interest in advancing in his job, but focuses all of his time and energy into his own personal interests. He is an extremely objective character, and this is even brought up by other playable characters โ that he is โtoo logicalโ and difficult to associate with.ย
โHowever, the ENTJโs Achilles heel, like that of the ESTJ, is their repressed Fi. If we imagine Te as a bulldozer and Fi as a protestor, then the ENTJโs bulldozer runs the protestors over without mercy. This can be a serious problem for the ENTJ for two reasons. First, like the ESTJ, the ENTJ can have difficulty appreciating or taking into account the emotional values of others in their goals. This attributes to the ENTJโs brutality in combat, because they are repressing the function that normally values inner sentimentality. This can even, if unchecked, become sadistic, in the sense that the ENTJ can have trouble telling if they are becoming too aggressive and are actually hurting people.โย โ Pierce on ENTJs
โก Alhaitham is actually quite objective and good natured when speaking about most of the Sumeru cast (save for Kaveh to an extent). He makes no personal judgements or snide remarks about people he doesnโt agree with (Dori) despite people seeing him as rude, he only expresses a personal opinion on his closest friend (Kaveh), and even then, it was his objective comment that Kavehโs flaw of helping too much being unsustainable was what led to their falling out in their Akademiya years.ย
*Even his comment on Kaveh aligns with inferior Fi pointing out the strong emotional display.
โก Tertiary Fi will still make itself known โ Alhaitham doesnโt display a deep, emotionally charged personal philosophyโinstead, he analyzes situations purely through logic and takes actions that optimize outcomes, not ones that align with strong personal beliefs. His stance against the sages was not brought about by ethics, but that the aftermath would inevitably make his life much more difficult. The closest we get is his distaste for the lazy sages, and how people will become slaves to orders and unable to question things for themselves if their plan with the Akasha is successful.
โก Alhaitham when rejecting Sirajโs premise about the hivemind did not focus on the ethics, ie: โitโs morally reprehensible to subjugate individuals to a hivemindโ but the realistic impracticality of it; your premise of the hivemind is fundamentally flawed and bound to fall apart.ย ย ย
If he had tertiary Fi, we might expect more moments of moral contemplation or personal beliefs, yet he rarely shows any focus or introspection about his morality.
โโญห.โย โหโก โโญห.โ โฎโ หโโญห.โย โหโก โโญห.โ โฎโ
โโญห.โย โหโก โโญห.โ โฎโ หโโญห.โย โหโก โโญห.โ โฎโ
Alhaithamโs Ni is undeniable, but why is it not his dominant function?
โโญห.โย โหโก โโญห.โ โฎโ หโโญห.โย โหโก โโญห.โ โฎโ
Letโs look at some more examples of clear Te to keep in mind.ย
โโญห.โย โหโก โโญห.โ โฎโ หโโญห.โย โหโก โโญห.โ โฎโ
Alhaithamโs dialogue is largely Te oriented, especially his vision; if we contrast his dialogue with the other cast, it aligns much more closely with other Te users. Letโs look at some Ni dominant lines.
โโญห.โย โหโก โโญห.โ โฎโ หโโญห.โย โหโก โโญห.โ โฎโ INTJ Diluc: ย โVisions are a light in the sea of darkness that surrounds those who have lost their way. But for those who have faith, they are little more than badges of conviction.โย
Scaramouche: โA puppet consumed by a raging fire will leave behind ashes. As for what will emerge from them....โ โI'll leave that kind of thing to fate. Obsessing over something that's destined to be ever out of one's reach is just a waste of time. I have more important things to attend to at the moment.โ
Ei: โAll the world holds dear is but a backdrop of constant motion. I stand before it alone and unchanging.โ โ Rainfall alone does not constitute a storm. Thunder is required.โ โThunder's roar and lightning's flash. So ephemeral. This is why reaching Eternity is desirable. ...Actually, this is why reaching Eternity is necessary.โ
INFJย
Xingqiu: "I've come to an epiphany based on some things I've been reading โ ultimately, the arts of both the polearm and the sword are just the art of the "eye." Ugh, it's a little difficult to explainโฆIf you want to know more, come with me to Wangshan Hall. But first, you have to promise me you won't laugh." Nahida: โCan you hear that? The heavens are whispering to all living things, "It's time for bed now."โ
โโญห.โย โหโก โโญห.โ โฎโ หโโญห.โย โหโก โโญห.โ โฎโ Letโs compare this with Te dominant characters.ย โโญห.โย โหโก โโญห.โ โฎโ หโโญห.โย โหโก โโญห.โ โฎโ ESTJ Kuki: โJust like a certificate, this Vision is solid proof of my capabilities. The only difference is that I'm still not certain about a Vision's assessment criteria.โ Ningguang: โThere's no need to use a Vision in affairs that Mora can solve. As far as affairs only a Vision can solve go, I know of only oneโฆโ
ENTJ Ayato: โA Vision is an eminently useful tool, so it only makes sense to put it to good use. Also, I like to think it's happiest in my possession because it has the chance to shine away in all its glory.โ
Letโs compare this with Alhaithamโs vision line: โTo be completely honest, this Dendro Vision isn't of much help to my research... However, there's no denying the effectiveness of elemental powers when settling a physical dispute, so it still proves useful at times.โ
Here we see him focusing on it like a tool, very Te.ย
โโญห.โย โหโก โโญห.โ โฎโ หโโญห.โย โหโก โโญห.โ โฎโ
โAll scholars seek knowledge and the truth. Some do so for fame, while others, for ambition. And some others enjoy conquering knowledge and the truth, transcending them, and savoring the sense of superiority in the process. Alhaitham isnโt any one of them. He is only driven by what intrigues him. He believes that many scholars have already become lost in their pursuits, taking the truth as a tool or even a shortcut to self-realization.โ
โก This is Te, it is something external to be analyzed and used effectively, rather than something mystical or transformative. Ni-dominant characters (like Mona, Scaramouche, Raiden Ei) tend to view knowledge as a means to a grander vision or existential understanding. Alhaitham in contrast sees the pursuit of knowledge as a practical exercise based on curiosity, disagreeing with the idea that truth is a path to self-fulfillment.
โโญห.โย โหโก โโญห.โ โฎโ หโโญห.โย โหโก โโญห.โ โฎโ
โกENTJs do not seek meaning before structureโinstead, they use their auxiliary Ni to foresee how structures should be arranged.
ENTJ (Te-Ni): "This is the system. How can it be optimized?"
INTJ (Ni-Te): "This is my vision. How can I make it real?" โโญห.โย โหโก โโญห.โ โฎโ หโโญห.โย โหโก โโญห.โ โฎโ
โThere are many things in this world that may catch our eye, but don't always believe what you see. If what we see in the world were all there was to it, then there'd be no need to think, would there?โ
ย โก This might seem like an Ni statement initially, but Alhaitham isnโt emphasizing subjective insight or hidden meanings; he is advocating for rational thought as a necessity rather than relying on perception alone. This is external Te: one must think critically, using logic to analyze and verify, rather than intuitively assuming deeper truths.
โThey are a Judging type, they prefer extroverted judging and introverted perceiving. You could say that they are more aggressive towards the outside world and more receptive towards their inner experience.
Their preferred way of doing this is through extroverted thinking and introverted intuition. Extroverted thinking is inductive. It forms conclusions based on objective data, which they then aggressively try to fulfill. Meanwhile, introverted intuition is contemplative, in that it has no real interest in reality, but perceives the possibilities of ideas within their own mind, developing more and more compelling and intellectual ideas, theories and understandings. The INTJ, then, is a โtrailblazerโ for whom their subjective perceptions and musings hold more importance and interest than objective data and its resultant conclusions. They are primarily concerned with perceiving the possibilities of internal ideas, developing compelling intellectual insights.
Everything is connected. All I have to do is find the weakest link, deal with the causal factors, and everything else tends to resolve itself.โ โกThis is line is commonly used to prop up Ni, but we have to look at the context. Alhaitham is using the Te approach of maximizing his efficiency when dealing with problems: use problem solving to identify the weak point as the most efficient way to solve the problem at hand. Heโs judging the concrete external data.ย โENTJs analyze the rules of the game, finding every place where efficiency might be maximized, including themselves. They are oriented towards constant self-development, seeking optimization of their own workings. They reduce every resource to its essential nature (relative to their goal), and structure the situation in the most advantageous manner.โ
โโญห.โย โหโก โโญห.โ โฎโ หโโญห.โย โหโก โโญห.โ โฎโ
โกAlhaitham does not act based on an inner subjective vision. Instead, his Ni serves his Te framework by recognizing how things should be arranged logically rather than focusing on a personal interpretation of reality.
"The collective needs motivation to execute its plans, just as machinery requires energy to operate."
Letโs look at Raiden Ei as an example of an INTJ:ย
"The world remains constant over the centuries. But human life is like the dew at dawn or a bubble rising through water. Transitory."
โกAlhaitham doesnโt speak this wayโhis analogies are concrete, structured, and directly applicable. Ei makes use of poetic or metaphorical speech detached from tangible reality.ย
ENTJs are more adaptable because they rely on real-world structures, while INTJs go by an internal vision.
โโญห.โย โหโก โโญห.โ โฎโ หโโญห.โย โหโก โโญห.โ โฎโ
As stated above, Alhaitham is not rigid in his philosophy. If a more efficient way arises, he will adopt it (truth serves no master).ย
INTJs stick to their vision even when dealing with inefficiency. Their Te serves Ni rather than the other way around.
The statement above also is an example of Alhaitham seeing logic as a tool to be used, focusing on its functional purpose rather than subjective interpretation, focusing on how systems work objectively.ย
โโญห.โย โหโก โโญห.โ โฎโ หโโญห.โย โหโก โโญห.โ โฎโ
โHowever, whether one seeks it or not, the truth is always there, hanging high above the sky like an illuminating star. It is not the end of a trip or the destination of a match. It is and shall remain constant, regardless of human existence. Also, human pursuits will not simply end after certain knowledge has been acquired โ though people never doubt that they can claim the fruit with joy and are prepared to sacrifice everything for it, their desire for knowledge will keep them going.โ
โก While this is abstract and showcases Ni, Alhaitham is not trying to synthesize a deeper, subjective meaning of truth. Instead, he presents truth as an objective constant, independent of human perceptionโ showing Teโs external objectivity rather than Niโs inward conceptualization. His statement is descriptive, not interpretative. (*Alhaitham character story one. Itโs not clear if this is the direct thinking of Alhaitham, or the third person narrator filling us in on his characterization.)
โโญห.โย โหโก โโญห.โ โฎโ หโโญห.โย โหโก โโญห.โ โฎโ
โก โAlhaitham has no desire to take charge or influence people. Does this not directly contradict ENTJ?โย
This to me is probably the most compelling point against ENTJ. To an extent, Te will typically manage inefficient systems.ย
โก ENTJs may value efficiency over authority. If leading is inefficient or undesirable, they won't see the point of it โ we see this all the time with him rejecting extra unnecessary work and things that will waste his time.
Alhaitham finds leadership tiresome and inconvenient, but he still has a Te-dominant approach regarding his areas of focus and everyday life.
โกHe removes himself from unnecessary involvement, which is more about personal preference. We do see him very competently step up to take care of planning and acting out the plan against the sages, but it is clear that leadership and management is something he personally dislikes.
โโญห.โย โหโก โโญห.โ โฎโ หโโญห.โย โหโก โโญห.โ โฎโ Ultimately INTJs are more Ni-Fi driven, while Alhaitham believes in objective, external truths rather than internal, subjective perspectives.
โThe ENTJโs tertiary function is Se, and this gives a similar contrast between the INTJ and ENTJ as it does with the INFJ and ENFJ, in that the ENTJ has a better relationship with actual facts and reality. They possess both a contemplative perception of inner possibilities and a clear perception of the current state of affairs. For this reason the ENTJ is more comfortable working in real time, adapting to changes in the here and now.
While the INTJ wants to prevent interference in the manifestation of their vision, the ENTJ is not nearly as concerned with this, and may even welcome the challenge of real time changes and problems so that they can demonstrate their strategic prowess and flexibility.
I donโt have much to say on Se, the crux of this post is on addressing Ni and Te placement. Referring to the previous Pierce writing on INTJ, inferior Se cuts INTJ off from tangible reality to an extent. ENTJ has Ni and Se balanced in the middle of the stack, making it less likely for them to skip over the tangible facts and reality of the situation.
Unlike the ENTJ who is primarily interested in inductive reasoning and determining logical inconsistencies, this is not the focus of the INTJ. The INTJ, like the INFJ, is first an internal perceiver who gets hunches or sees visions of how the world really works.ย
Like the INFJ, the INTJ represses Se, which results in similar difficulties and reservations. The INTJโs perception of the real world is very unreliable; they are so focused on what could be that it takes concerted and unpleasant effort to focus on what already is. As a result the INTJ often misses or ignores even large amounts of data in the conception of their vision, always drifting away from reality before managing to review all the evidence.
Closing notes
I do see the merit in INTJ as a stance, and I do recognize that ENTJ is not infallible. However, regarding Alhaitham as a whole, he follows the trend of the objective impersonal truth seeker who lacks strong subjective visions, which leans more closely with ENTJ than INTJ.
Thank you for reading!
