As someone who is not from an English speaking country, nor an Italian the difference in attitude is quite startling. I always find it funny when a random English speaker calls it Dante's inferno and they're surprised it's not actually called like that or that there's more to it. And those are people who have at least a basic knowledge of him you'd be surprised how many people are like Dante who's that? never heard of him. I did my "research".
On the other hand I also observe the widespread popularity of Shakespeare in English speaking countries. But I feel it's more limited to literature and drama circles he's not generally remembered as the father of the modern English language the same way Dante is for Italians.
what do u think english speakers shld know about dante? :0
i feel like non italian people in general would benefit from reading about the cultural and historical context around dante and the divine comedy as they get into the poem. reading a book as it is, just for leisure, isn't necessarily a bad thing, but with all the rancid takes i keep seeing time and time again i think we should start normalizing getting informed about some basic context around the books we read, especially if they're that old, even if we're reading for leisure. as for anglophones specifically, i think they need to go a bit deeper, in the sense that most of them need to seriously look inward at their cultural perception of themselves and their language and literature, because they're often projecting a sense of superiority onto the foreign art and history they interact with and interpret, and this isn't just about the divine comedy, but it's still true that they tend to express a special kind of mockery of italy and italian culture, and you definitely see it in the way they talk about dante.
another thing i'd recommend anglophones to keep in mind is that dante is to us kind of what shakespeare is to them, culture wise, perhaps even more so considering that dante is considered the literal father of the italian language. although he is and has been misused for nationalistic propaganda purposes (like during fascism for example), he remains a beloved historical and cultural figure, as he has been for centuries, and rightfully so. you really couldn't overestimate his importance here. we still study him in school from an early age, sometimes elementary, almost every italian household has at least one copy of the comedy, we use phrases from the comedy in everyday speech, the list goes on; so, granted this doesn't apply to every single italian person you'll ever meet, we tend to be quite emotionally attached to dante alighieri. if you see italians getting """irrationally""" heated about foreigners mocking him, it's because you're touching quite a soft spot of our culture.
so basically, the clash happens because of anglocentric, often usacentric sense of superiority on one hand, and italian cultural pride on the other. so please, if you're an anglo, be mindful of your own mental frameworks and those of people from other countries whose cultures you're getting into. you'll be very welcome to fuck around with us if you just stay respectful and educate yourself just a little bit, that's all.

Yeah me too I remember seeing this picture for the first time years ago and wondering the same thing. That girl looks a lot like Mel I imagine that's how Melizabeth daughter would look like.
Tumblr media
Look at these two! I thought these were Meli and Zel’s kids when I first saw this drawing. I wonder who Nakaba intended for these two kids to be? 🤔
Either way, love them just the same 🫶

I decided to share a bit about my Divine Comedy retelling/reimagination I am not sure how to label it. It has Beatrice midway though her mortal life going on a field trip to hell (with Dante included, the boy sure likes revisiting that place I wonder why 🤔).

One of my fave facts about him is that he used to do a 13th century version of rap battles with his friends - he and his friends would roast each other through poetry and some of those poems actually survived to this day.
Do you know any cool little facts about Dante?? Sometimes I google him and I’m met with “fun facts” such as “bEATrice WaS hIs MusE” Like I wanna know some niche and fun facts about him. Like his favorite food or some shit. Fuck, anything at all
my plan was to post this on dantedì and then I forgot fuck- forgive me :)
I have to admit I find this a tricky question because we don't actually know a lot about him, and as I also don't know how much you yourself already know about Dante, I hope you won't find these banal!
1. Dante used to draw!
2. he possibly practiced falconry
3. some think he suffered from epilepsy (I'm not sure this is a fun fact though)
4. he was devoted to Saint Lucia because he had trouble with his eyesight (but I also think it's because she offers a lot of great allegories and metaphors)
btw I understand your frustration, when they present basic key-facts about something, that everybody knows, as 'fun facts' it's like,, what fun are you talking about I want to punch you 💀

Ok, there's one more thing that I've been wondering about. Since Kiane kids as half-fairies are canonically sexless... does that mean that Lancelot as a half-fairy is also sexless? I mean that would make sense.
Like I really haven't been following the manga enough to know much about Lancelot but I remember that he used to have long hair as a kid and get mistaken for a girl? And while many boys do have long hair but what if the reason was that he used to act more feminine as a young kid so Ban and Elaine assumed he will most likely turn out to be a female but then when he grew a bit he was like nah, mom and dad, I'm actually a boy.

Going to be honest this feels like an excuse just to not have nasiens be gay and date Percy and I don’t like it…

I think that I am gonna ignore Nakaba's explanation and headcanon that:
- fairies are not assigned gender at birth
- they're all very gender fluid as young kids, a fairy child can change their gender like 5 times per day based on their mood - fairy parents see it as a normal part of development
- some of them stay gender fluid their whole lives but many will settle to their gender at some point. It can be influenced by romantic feelings but also many other things. We never saw King or Elaine change their gender because by the time we meet them thery already settled to it.

Nanatsu no Taizai | The Seven Deadly Sins | King Harlequin and Diane This fanart was supposed to be made months ago …. but I was really busy with university and work, so I could only do easy things like colorings until now. But finally I finished this big Kiane fanart drawing: They taking a shower together in a waterfall and sharing an intimate moment. Thanks to Evka for giving me the idea of the waterfall!! I absolutely loved drawing this. Original drawing by Redworld96 Characters -> Suzuki Nakaba
If you’re going to share this fanart, I kindly ask to not modify or add new content to it, and please, always credit back to Redworld96′s blog. Please respect my decision, thank you.
