“I… i think I have fangs.”
“Of course, the graveyard at midnight is super sexy and not creepy, let’s go there.”
“Wait, why does this grave have your name on it?”
“I don’t think this is our town anymore.”
“And this is why you shouldn’t screw with the laws of nature.”
“I can’t get a signal on my phone, the car is dead, and I’m fairly certain we are out of matches.”
“The mayor has declared a state of emergency. I told you we should have left.”

“Annleigh please!” A voice called out through the darkness, “I’m sorry Annleigh!” Annleigh searches through the darkness surrounding her, desperately trying to find the other voice.
“Farrah? Where are you?” Despite her greatest efforts Farrah didn’t seem to hear her calls, “Help! Help! Please, someone help!”
Annleigh tried to reach her sister one more time, desperate to grab onto the younger girl.
Then she woke up.

the sister i didn’t have, moved in
masterpost
ao3 link
When Annleigh was little she enjoyed playing on her own, she would have tea parties with her dolls and try to make it all the way across the monkey bars at the park. She also enjoyed playing with Clark, Clark was in her kindergarten class and went to her church so they became fast friends. Sometimes she would play with the other kids as well but it never lasted.
By the time six-year-old Annleigh entered the first grade she was content with her friend group; her best friend was still Clark, just like he had always been, and she had a pretty great group of friends who were all very fun to play with. Although, sometimes Annleigh still liked to play alone with her dolls in her room. She loved being able to have full control of games. Plus, that was when she could spend time with her imaginary friend.
Annleigh had always been very indecisive when it came to names, so her imaginary friend never really had one, although she had been nicknamed Fairy. Annleigh always enjoyed playing with Fairy and saw her as the sister she would never have. As Annleigh got older, she played with Fairy less, and by fifth grade had forgotten about the friend she had come up with to fill the empty space saved for the sister she would never have.
The August before Annleigh started highschool her mom remarried, her new stepfather was some man her mom had met who knows where and he came with a daughter. At first, Annleigh was excited at the prospect of having a sister, but then her dad moved out of state to “get away from it all for a bit” and everything started changing around the house and Annleigh was going to high school now so nothing was staying the same.
Farrah was sweet at first, the then thirteen-year-old didn’t talk much and was constantly out. In Annleigh’s opinion, the two girls would get on just fine if Farrah ever let her in. She reminded Annleigh of the imaginary friend that got her through what she now refers to as the beginning of the end . She was also very interested in magic and was constantly trying to show Annleigh new tricks that she had learned.
Farrah spent the whole of August trying to figure out some disappearing trick but just couldn’t get it (little did either girl know that in just two years Farrah would manage to pull off the world’s greatest disappearing act). Though, it was September when things got bad; Farrah was out almost every night and Annleigh constantly caught her sneaking home past curfew.
One particularly bad night Annleigh hesitated for a second before walking away from her step-sister. She couldn’t help but notice something was off about the thirteen-year-old, and as Annleigh grew closer she found an answer as to why. Alcohol, she’s drunk. She didn’t yell at the small girl, instead she helped Farrah get to bed and made her promise not to do it again.
When Farrah broke her promise and stumbled into the house drunk again not even a week later, Annleigh did yell, she said some pretty nasty things that made her wince when she reflected on the argument. At that moment Annleigh lost all faith in Farrah, and she went from being the little sister she never had to the intruder in Annleigh’s home.
The sisters’ relationship continued to splinter and crack as time moved forward and soon it was the night of the annual Giles Corey High cheer team sleepover. Farrah had long given up on magic tricks at this point, just like she had given up studying space when her mum had died in combat when she was eleven. Instead, she partied, drowned her thoughts and feelings with alcohol and if she woke up in an unfamiliar bed, then so be it. She knew nobody on the team liked her, that they would replace her at any given chance, that everyone would replace her at any given chance.
Maybe that’s why she went to a party that was farther away than usual, maybe that’s why she drank more, maybe it didn’t matter because she was just the drunk, and always would be. She knew that at fifteen she could be better, she should be better but she wasn’t and nobody around her seemed to understand that. In her drunken haze, she didn’t register Annleigh’s harsh calls that were getting louder. Was Annleigh here? Is she getting closer? What’s Clark doing here?
Annleigh was beside her now, so was Clark. Annleigh was saying something and she looked pretty mad, Clark was trying to calm her down. Did he care? No, nobody cares. Farrah got up as Annleigh pulled her arm, stumbling a bit causing Clark to reach out and stabilize her. Farrah liked Clark’s presence, he was calm while Annleigh was harsh and he often tried to soften her blows. Clark offered Farrah a warm smile and gently guided her to the car.
Clark and Annleigh sat in the front of the car while Farrah sat in the back, quietly humming along to whatever was on the radio. As Clark drove Annleigh couldn’t help but look behind her at Farrah, the smaller girl tapped her fingers against the side of the car. Farrah’s eyes were glazed over, the girl was conscious but not really seeing the world around her; she would never admit it but seeing her sister like this scared Annleigh to no end. She truly did love the girl deep down but she was still too angry to accept this.
Soon enough they pulled into Riley’s driveway, Annleigh got out of the car and gave Clark a quick kiss, thanking him for driving them and then she grabbed Farrah’s arm to drag her into the house. When they got to the basement Farrah went from being quiet to argumentative and standoffish, she also now had a water bottle that definitely didn’t have water in it, “I swear I took that when I took her flask.” Before long Farrah was picking a fight with Chess and Kate but Annleigh just tunned it out until Kate and Farrah were being separated, followed by Kate storming out.
“I’ll go talk to her.” With that Chess left after her friend. After an awkward moment, everyone else started to filter out. Annleigh went upstairs and pulled out her phone to text Clark, she didn’t hear Farrah following her up.
“I could’ve used your help.” Farrah paused for a moment, taking a step closer, “I’m sorry, ok? I just thought- I didn’t think…”
Annleigh shook her head and sighed, annoyed with the immature girl. She didn’t look up from her phone as she answered, “Yeah, that’s not new.”
Farrah huffed, “Can you put Clark away and look at me?” She moved closer to Annleigh again, trying to grab at the girl’s arm.
Annleigh just rolled her eyes and pulled her arm away, “I just need a second.”
Farrah moved forward again, this time reaching over Annleigh to try and grab the phone, “No, Annleigh. Give me the phone.” Annleigh’s phone fell to the ground, breaking on impact. Both girls jolted forward towards the phone.
“Shit” Farrah grabbed the phone, panicking as she tried to turn it on, “Um, I’m sure it just needs a minute! Put it in rice maybe?” Farrah tries, but it only gets Annleigh more upset.
“Stop!” Annleigh snaps, causing Farrah to take a step back. “You weren’t even supposed to have your phone; you broke the rule”
Annleigh just rolls her eyes, “You’re not supposed to be drunk Farrah! You’re not supposed to be living at my house! I’m not supposed to be wasting all my time babysitting a stupid child.”
Farrah looks down at her feet, ashamed, “I’m sorry. I wanna be a good sister.”
Annleigh huffs again, only getting angrier, “You are not my sister.” She then pushes past Farrah, heading for the kitchen.
The rest of the night passes in a blur, Clark broke in and proposed only for Cairo to interrupt, eventually, Kate came back but there was no sign of Chess or Farrah. This didn’t concern Annleigh, Farrah could do what she wanted. That was until they found Chess dead and all hell broke loose. Their phones were missing and there was still no sign of Farrah or Reeses, now Annleigh was panicking because that’s her sister, whether she likes it or not.
Riley ran back into the house, causing the others to follow after hearing Reese’s scream. They followed the sound to the upstairs bathroom, which was covered in blood. If Annleigh thought her night couldn’t get worse there sat Clark, her amazing boyfriend and best friend, dead with his head resting on the toilet and a look over her shoulder confirmed her greatest fears. Farrah sat in the shower covered in blood, not breathing. Annleigh rushed over to her little sister’s body and let a sob escape her as she held Farrah’s cold, lifeless body. “I should've been here, I shouldn’t have walked away, I'm sorry. I’m so so sorry.”
Soon she was ushered away from the bathroom and next thing Annleigh knew they were blaming the freshman, Mattie for the murders. Farrah’s dad rushed to her, still unaware of what had transpired in the house, he hugged her for a long time before pulling away and asking where Farrah was.
“She’s gone, I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry” Annleigh fell back into his arms, breaking down as he soothed her.
The next week was the funeral and Annleigh couldn’t bring herself to go to Clark’s instead she stayed home and burned his sweater and the pictures. They were together when they died, they had it coming. Farrah’s funeral may have been the hardest few hours of her life, it had been an open casket which just made it worse. Farrah’s hair that had been in braids when she died was now curled nicely, and she wore a sweet dress but this wasn’t Farrah, this wasn’t her sister . Farrah almost always had a mischievous smirk and a glint in her eyes that had faded in recent years, her sister was immature and caring and insecure and so full of life. Now she was just dead.
Farrah’s door had been closed and her room left untouched even a month after her death, the now family of three had silently agreed that doing anything to it made it official, Farrah wasn’t coming home. It was a gloomy Tuesday in February when Annleigh found herself sitting on Farrah’s bed, a pen and paper in her hand. She took a minute and a few deep breaths before she started to write.
Hey Farrah, it’s been a while.
I guess I should start out by saying I’m sorry; what I said was awful and stupid, you are my sister and it shouldn’t have taken losing you to see that. I tried so hard to convince myself you and Clark were together, together because how does someone kill a child for no reason. I know now that some people are just that cold blooded. You must have been so scared and I don’t know how I didn’t hear you scream, how I didn’t know.
You would have been 16 today Farrah, you would have begged mom and dad (sorry, is that weird? I don’t want you to think I’m replacing you by calling him my dad, I know he’s yours) to let you drive and Clark would have sat in the passenger seat to help you. I would have joked about not going anywhere near any vehicle you are driving but sat in the back anyway and you would have complained about how short you are.
Riley is in jail now, by the way, and Cairo is the captain, Eva Sanchez is the new flyer, Reese is the new base and the team is trying to heal. I guess I realized I couldn’t move on until I’ve apologized and maybe this will help me feel closer to you, I really don’t know. I don’t know why I was so cold and shut you out, I’d always wanted a sister and I remember how awful it was when my mum had lost her baby when I was about 6.
I came up with an imaginary friend to fill the space I had made in my heart for my little sister. Her name was Fairy and she was a lot like you. As I got older I forgot about Fairy, until you came into my life. I love you, Farrah, I always have and I always will. You were the best thing to ever happen to me and I’m sorry I treated you poorly. You are my sister and an amazing one at that. I love you so so so much and I promise I won’t forget you, I promise I’ll hold on to you and your memory for the rest of my life.
I guess this is goodbye,
All my love,
Annleigh
As Annleigh drifted off into a peaceful sleep Farrah smiled, her sister would be alright.

Legend of the Six has now been updated!
Chapter 23: Daughter of Shadow
Words: 5032
AO3 Link
When we are little, we are taught that the darkness is scary.
Children hide from it under the comforts of pillows and blankets, men shield themselves from it with torches and lanterns, and the general public escape it through dreams and sleep. From the day we are born to the day we die, we are told to fear the Dark, and the creatures that live amongst it. It’s personified as the unknown, as the wicked, as the evil. The Dark, many claim, cannot be trusted, nor can it be utilized without misfortune.
The many, to Anne Boleyn, are considered fools.
Ever since she was a little girl - even with the scary stories of the Darkness being evil and Light being good - Anne Boleyn constantly sought for a second opinion. It’s not that she didn’t trust the stories; far from it, as she had seen what the dark could do. But she’s also seen it do wonders: it hides her from an ambush when she’s younger, it reveals foolish enemies positions that don’t know how to control their shadows, and it is a comfort, still, when late at night. After all, Anne argues, the darkness is the reason why we are in awe of the stars. That’s got to count for something, right?
As she continued down this path of Darkness, she came to befriend it in a unique way. Shadows would race to her to say hello, like old friends. The Darkness often wrapped around her like a cloak, a better shield than the ones the finest blacksmiths of the Realm could make. She extended a hand to the dark and found that it not only accepted, but embraced her as their own. And she was happier for it.
Of course, her friendship didn’t go unnoticed; it’s what started the rumors in court to begin with. Many in the court would talk ill of her friends, of the comforts she held that were so unique and against the grain that people thought it scary. She was shunned by many in the courts - all afraid of this girl that could control the darkness, calling her a Servant to it, a thrall. To many, Anne was cursed, and her regency should never had seen the light of day.
Unluckily for them (and, eventually, for her), Henry wasn’t afraid of the dark either.

Turns out it wasn't the right time for the next week either. As the number of days since the initial blow up grew, so did the tension between Anne and Cathy. Anne spent most of the time locked in her attic room while Cathy stayed in her own room writing. The two queens spent as little time together as possible, which would prove to be a larger problem in the following days.
While Jane attempted to help both girls Catherine grew more anxious. Cathy was her goddaughter and she had always felt a sense of responsibility for the girl. Anne had been her lady in waiting for years before she had been divorced and she loved the girl to death despite how much she got on Catherine’s nerves.
While the tension in the house grew, another issue arose; Katherine seemed to be avoiding Cathy at all costs. At first, it seemed to be out of loyalty to her cousin but as time went on her subtle attempts to put space between herself and Cathy, turned to the girl frantically trying to hide behind the closest person to her when Cathy entered the room.
After nine days of watching her family splinter, Catherine had had enough.
~~~~~~
“Cathy, we need to talk.”
Cathy turned around to see María de Salinas and Catherine standing just behind her. Cathy tensed for a moment before noticing their relaxed body language and she let out a breath she didn’t know she was holding. Cathy nodded her head before turning to open her door and lead the two women into her bedroom. Cathy’s cheeks flushed red slightly as she noticed the mess on her floor, the entire room was covered in balled-up scraps of paper that were obviously supposed to be in the overflowing garbage bin that sat in the corner.
Though Jane was known as being the mum friend for the girls Catherine and Cathy had formed a familial bond very quickly. As such Catherine felt it important that she look after her namesake at all times.
The three women sat on Cathy’s bed, all lost in thought for a moment before Catherine pulled the sixth queen into a loving embrace. Cathy relaxed slightly, focusing on the soft thumping of her godmother’s heart and the calming smell of her lavender perfume. Soon Maria spoke up, breaking the silence.
“Times were different back then and we were all different people. There was a power imbalance between genders and when people get caught up in emotions they forget to look at the facts.”
Cathy looked up slightly and Maria almost thought the girl looked a bit like a lost puppy as she tilted her head to the side. Catherine brushed a hand through the girl’s curly hair as she nodded in agreement with her life long best friend. They needed to make it clear that they weren’t mad at her for what happened with Elizabeth all those years ago.
“Anne knows that too, she’s just hurting right now. I think she’s madder at herself than she is at you.”
Cathy nodded her headed, pursing her lips as she mulled over their words in her head. “I loved her, you know? I would have done anything for her and yet I let her into the home of a monster. I let him take advantage of her and I was so blinded by love I didn’t even realize it was happening.”
“Even the smartest of people make mistakes.”
The three women looked up at the doorway to see Anne standing there, the choker she always wore around her neck was gone, leaving the obviously agitated scar in the open for all to see, her hair was thrown into a messy bun, and the bags under her eyes were prominent, but she still held a slight smile on her face and a familiar spark in her eyes; Something that had been missing in the days beforehand. Anne moved forward sitting on the edge of the bed quickly examining Cathy, the girl was curled up in a ball between Catherine and Maria and she looked so small and fragile, Anne smiled as she shook her head.
“You and I were similar, both too smart for our own goods. I know you saw what happened to Kit when people found out what had happened to her and had seen how angry the men around me got when I started to talk back to Henry. I know you very nearly suffered the same fate as us. I also know you never meant for Elizabeth to be put in that position.”
“How do you know that? How do you know that I’m not just a bad person?”
“Because I know you, Cathy."
Cathy nodded as tears welled up in her eyes, she pulled Anne into a hug, repeating different apologies over and over. Anne just held her closer, finally letting the tears fall. The two girls stayed like that for a while, not noticing as Maria and Catherine left the room. Cathy laughed slightly as the two pulled apart.
“I’m not ready to forgive you fully, I don’t know if I ever will,” Cathy looked down at her lap, picking at her nails as she nodded slightly. Anne takes a breath before she continues. “But I’m ready to start. We’re a family and families fight and then they make up. No matter what.”
Cathy gave Anne a watery smile before they heard a loud voice from the door, “About bloody time isn’t it?” The two girls laughed at Anna’s blunt nature before motioning the rest of the queens and ladies in waiting to enter the room. Aragon quickly grabbed the remote for Cathy’s tv before sitting next to her goddaughter.
Anne turned to Cathy and laughed for a moment, “Est-ce qu’ils pensent vraiment qu’on va tous rentrer dans ce lit ?” Cathy shook her head and laughed,
“En les connaissant, ils trouveront un moyen.” Both girls laughed as the movie began to play.
~~~~~~
Cathy took the bedroom on the ground floor when they all moved in together, knowing her own sleeping habits and ability to think logically even when sleep-deprived would most likely shine through when the other girls were upset. This left Cathy on the night shift, she always made sure to be aware of any signs of distress throughout the night, she was always the first to get to Kit when she needed it, the one to make Jane or Catherine a cup of tea or talk some sense into Anna. Cathy also began to notice patterns in behaviour over the time the queens had lived together, yet the one pattern that may just have been the most disturbing was the one queen Cathy never thought needed comfort, Anne Boleyn.
It was late Saturday night (or maybe early Sunday morning, Cathy couldn’t tell anymore) when a piercing scream rang through the house, Cathy immediately jumped to her feet and ran up the stairs, fully expecting to find Kit having another nightmare. Yet to her surprise she found everyone standing in the hall, everyone that is, except for Anne. The five women rushed up to the attic bedroom in hopes of helping their friend.
Anne was still in her bed, clearly still in some form of unconsciousness and scratching fiercely at her neck. The sight of the blood dripping down her cousin’s neck sent Katherine out of the room immediately, mumbling about feeling sick, which sent Anna after the teen. Aragon went to get some towels and a first aid kit while Jane and Cathy spoke to the girl, attempting to wake her up or at the very least lessen her distress. Yet the thrashing and assault on her neck only seemed to get worse so Cathy did the only thing she could think to do; Cathy jumped onto the bed quickly, pinning Anne’s arms down and straddling the girl. She knew it would make Anne uncomfortable when she woke up and Cathy couldn’t stop thinking about Thomas and Elizabeth, but she pushed those thoughts aside.
The door flung open again as Aragon entered the room, the women immediately ran over to the side of the bed attempting to help Jane wake the girl. It took what felt like an eternity but Anne eventually woke with a quiet gasp. Cathy got off the girl quickly moving to hold Anne against her chest, hoping the sound of Cathy’s stable heartbeat would help calm the distraught girl. Cathy held her there as Jane and Catherine cleaned the blood from Anne’s neck, and she held the girl tighter as they applied disinfectant and bandages.
Soon the storm seemed to have passed as all six queens sat on Anne’s bed, a comfortable silence surrounding them. Cathy sat at the opposite side of the bed to Anne, her head resting on her Godmother’s stomach. A few jokes were made to lighten the mood softly but that was it. The queens cherished these quiet moments together, being able to leave their busy lives at the door and just be together for a few moments. That is until Anne’s phone started buzzing,
“So as much as I love and appreciate this you guys, we have a job to get to”
Anne pushed forward, falling onto her stomach, leaving her stretched across the whole bed. Katherine let out a small giggle at her cousin’s antics, pushing herself off the bed to get ready. The others all followed suit, so half an hour and plenty of complaints later the six queens were piled into the car on the way to the theatre.
“Anns! Annie! I need new clothes and there’s a big sale at the mall!”
Jane turned around from her spot in the passenger seat and smiled at Katherine’s bouncing around. The girl had really come into herself over the past few months, sometimes she was just as mischievous as Anne but they would take it over the scared little girl she used to be any day.
“We’ll all go to the mall after our first performance today Kit, how about that?”
Katherine bounced excitedly while she talked with Anne as they pulled into their parking spot. The queens all piled out of the car and began to walk up to the theatre.
“I call shotgun on the way to the mall”
Anne sprinted ahead, Katherine and Anna not far behind, leaving the three remaining queens giggling at the girls’ sudden bursts of energy.
Translations:
Est-ce qu’ils pensent vraiment qu’on va tous rentrer dans ce lit ? - Do they really think we’re all going to get (fit) into this bed?
En les connaissant, ils trouveront un moyen - Knowing them, they’ll find a way

life on mars
masterpost
so this is my first time writing for WATT so they may be a bit ooc, but i really like how it turned out!
tags: @thenameisnoone
Eva wasn’t really sure why they were having a team sleepover, knowing what had happened at the last one. Plus, the school board had asked they only ever meet on school property. Cairo had assured everyone that it was just a group of friends hanging out- no cheer involved. Plus, it was going to be at Annleigh’s house meaning two things:
There would be adults in the house (and even if there weren’t Annleigh has a landline)
They would get to see Farrah
While Chess had gotten out of the hospital a week and a half after the first sleepover, Farrah had only been released two weeks ago. Eva guessed that Cairo wanted to talk about it a bit, it had been a month and everyone was out of hospital now so it made sense. Although she hadn’t been there that night, Eva couldn’t help but feel the dread pool in her stomach as she rang the doorbell.
Eva still had yet to meet Farrah or even see what she looked like, maybe that’s why she didn’t make the connection between Annleigh’s little sister and her old friend, or maybe it was because her childhood best friend couldn’t be the same girl who had been stabbed by the high school cheer captain. No matter the reason, Eva still stood shocked as the girl she hadn’t seen in nearly two and a half years opened the door.
Both girls stood frozen as the other girls came down to greet the newcomer, it was only when Farrah’s dad spoke up did both girls snap back to reality, “Oh, hey Sanchez!” Eva looked over at him and smiled, “Hey, Mr. Torres” Farrah moved out of the doorway to allow Eva in. Eva dropped her bag and waved at the rest of the squad before turning around with a shit-eating grin on her face.
“You” Farrah returned the smile, “Me.” Both girls promptly broke out into laughter, leaving their friends all slightly confused. Annleigh was the first to speak up, tilting her to the side slightly like a puppy,
“So you guys know each other then?”
Eva laughed as she slung her arm around Farrah’s shoulder, “We were neighbours until they moved in with you, but we lost touch because SOMEONE didn’t have a phone.”
“Hey! Not fair!” Farrah stuck her tongue out at the girl next to her before making her way upstairs, the other following behind. Eva grabbed her bag, slipped her hand into Kate’s and followed the rest of the team up the stairs.
“They are currently redoing my room so Farrah and I are sharing for now, sorry it’s a little cramped.” Annleigh turned around with an apologetic smile before continuing, “We can use the basement after my mum is done with work, so probably around 4.”
The girls all settled in, the usual friendly banter bounced around the room. Kate was leaning against Eva with her feet in Chess’ lap, earning her a very dramatic eye roll from her best friend. Eva watched with a small smile as the rest of the team argued over something good-naturedly, possibly the cereal debate but she couldn’t really tell. Soon Cairo stood up, grabbing everyone’s attention.
“So, just to be clear this is not a cheer sleepover, we are hanging out as friends. That’s what this team needs to be, we can’t be divided anymore because this is a sport that requires trust and a team effort. What happened- what Riley did- was awful and we all are going to need time to heal but we can get through this together.”
Cairo gave a small smile and awkwardly sat back down as everyone gave different assurances of agreement.
“So, Cairo has feelings, who knew?”
Eva rolled her eyes at her sarcastic girlfriend, “Don’t start anything Kate” Kate threw her hands up in surrender, mumbling incoherently under her breath. Farrah snickered at the interaction, sending a knowing smile in her old friend’s direction.
The rest of the afternoon went on as planned, the girls watched some stupid rom-con and goofed off. Chess and Farrah disappeared for a while to have a long-overdue conversation and came back with a new understanding of each other. Around 4, Annleigh’s mum had finished work and the girls were allowed to use the basement for the rest of the night.
After dinner, the couches and table had been moved to make enough room for some tumbling passes because Farrah and Eva apparently had to make everything a competition. Soon enough everyone had settled down in a mountain of pillows and blankets to watch Cheer on Netflix because Annleigh was offended that Reese had never seen it.
After a few minutes, Eva looked around, she often liked to zone out and just observe. She soon realized that Farrah wasn’t with them anymore and she couldn’t remember the girl leaving. Set on making sure the girl was okay, Eva slipped out of her girlfriend’s embrace, told the team she was getting water and headed upstairs.
As she walked towards the kitchen, a bang filled the thick silence, followed by a weak “fuck”. Eva quickly opened the door to the kitchen and glanced around the room confused before her eyes landed on Farrah sitting on the floor between the sink and the island, a hand clutching her side and a first aid box sitting in front of her.
Eva moved so she was sitting in front of Farrah, watching the girl closely. “You good there?” She moved Farrah’s hand from her side before inhaling sharply, “Shit Farrah, you're bleeding.” Farrah met her eyes and gave a watery smile, her eyes slightly glazed over. “Yeah, I’m technically not supposed to be tumbling for another week even though the stitches are out. I don’t really know why it’s bleeding though.”
Eva shook her head before lifting up her friend’s shirt slightly, “let’s get this cleaned up and then see what’s wrong from there.” After a few minutes, the girls decided the scar had probably opened up a bit when they were tumbling. After putting a new band-aid on the wound the girls decided to leave it for now, if it bled through they would get an adult.
Soon the girls just sat in comfortable silence, neither really wanting to move, knowing they would be questioned and this would be the last bit of quiet they would get for a while. Eva examined her friend for a moment, concern crossing her features as she noticed the girl’s gaze flickering up to a bottle of alcohol on the counter, “Farrah, no.” Her voice was soft but firm, the girl in question turned to her, tears clouding her vision.
“It’s so hard sometimes, I just want to forget and for my head to be quiet, just for a little while, but I know I can’t go back to that. It’s just so hard.” Her voice trembled and Eva gave a small smile, pulling the younger girl into a hug.
“Do you remember when we were little, how we would get that old red wagon out and take it up to the top of the street since it was on a hill, and we would hop in and ride down?” Farrah laughed as she nodded, “We said we were going to mars.”
“We did. Because on mars, there were no problems, no dad’s got sick, there were no wars for mom’s to go and fight in. Everything was okay. Sometimes there was so much turbulence we would fall and scrape our knees but we would get up and push through because once we got to mars everything would be okay,”
Eva paused for a minute, looking down at her younger friend. Farrah looked up at her inquiringly, obviously confused. “This is kinda like the turbulence, you want to give up because everything is a little bit shaky right now but you’re almost there Farrah, you’re almost on mars.”
Farrah looked down and her hands, fidgeting as she thought for a moment before looking up, “I don’t know who to be anymore, my friends want me to cool, to go to parties and drink and hook up with boys and that’s not fun,” Eva nodded, shifting so she could look Farrah in the eyes, “If they want you to change for them then they aren’t you’re friends Farrah.” The younger girl nodded, she sat quietly for a moment, “It’s like, everyone has always wanted me to fit into this box but everyone had different ideas of what should go in the box so I just chipped parts of myself away to make others happy, I don’t know who to be.”
“Be you, no one else can.”
