This Prothonotary Warbler is the golden ghost of the swamp, as you will usually find these beauties hanging around areas with water. Did you know that its name was inspired by the Catholic faith? The papal clerks (prothonotaries) are high-ranking Catholic clerks from the Vatican who wore bright yellow robes. The Prothonotary Warbler was first described by Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, in 1779, and he gave it the French name "Le figuier protonotaire," which translates to "the fig tree protonotary." I’m not sure how many votes it took to secure its name in history, but it definitely is unique.
