He ducked behind the curtains as he watched Madam Pomfrey make her final rounds before she settled for the evening. When the matron nurse had disappeared from his peripheral vision, he stepped out of his hiding place and strode purposefully towards the bed at the farthest corner, where a girl with wide, unseeing eyes stared up at the ceiling, her brown curls spilling in a wild disarray against the stark-white pillows behind her head. Her hand had remained frozen mid-air, fingers curled tightly to an invisible object. His eyes flickered towards the mirror at her bedside table, relief flowing through his veins as he realized what she had done. 

He could feel his heart thudding angrily against his rib cage and his breathing quickening at the realization of her being alive despite her temporary petrified condition. When he overheard Pansy and her gang of Slytherin girls whispering excitedly that she had been attacked, he felt a cold rush of dread coursing down his spine. He could not bring himself to speak, let alone eat or sleep. So when everyone was abed, he sneaked out of the dormitories to seek her out in the hospital wing.

His hand seemed to have a will of its own as he reached over to clasp her cold fingers. “Listen, Granger…” he began. “I never really liked you and I still think you’re a nightmare, but…” he paused to clear away the lump in his throat. “I know I said I wanted you to die but I came to realize…” he fell silent as he gazed forlornly down at her, his grip on her hand tightening. “…that I’d miss you if you were gone for good. I may hate you and your pathetic excuses of friends, but I wouldn’t want you dead. I didn’t mean those words, Granger… so come back.” he blinked away rapidly the hot moisture behind his lids. “Come back, Granger, so I can give you hell again.”
