The Light House
The story of two men trapped in the confines of a lighthouse, a gnarly looking mermaid that uses her the voice of her song to drive one mad and the restless tale of one’s soul committing to the admittance of the urge to fuck a steak.

The Light House which is written by Max and Robert Eggers and directed by Robert stars Willam Dafoe and Robert Pattinson as two keepers of secluded lighthouse on the brink of a deserted island. Our story begins as the two men find themselves arriving on the island for a four week stretch of time in which they’ve been tasked with the mere duties of upkeep and maintenance. Things get a little, bonkers--to say the least--pretty fast, as we hit zero to sixty pretty sharply.
The beginning of the movie is pretty standard set up and pacing, moving almost a little slow, but builds to a pretty great speed by the end and overall has an amazing pace.  The two actors deliver a performance that is not only oscar worthy but completely worthy of being thrown in the listing for greatest performances of all time. The two do an astonishing job delivering, not one, but--many a piece, on monologues.
The fantastical use of black and white cinematography, requested from even before the script was written by co writer and directed Eggers, is used ever so brilliantly and almost acts as it’s own character to the movie, providing a setting tone that couldn’t be achieved without it. Speaking of settings and tone, the score of the movie, being minimalist at best is used to such perfection.Foghorns, waves and wubwub sub-woofing sounds provide most of the jarring and unsettling sounds you’ll hear throughout the movie.
Many sequences in the story leave you questioning so much but in a great way. There is most certainly a lovecraftian vibe to the movie but not in the way you’d expect going in. Several plot twists leave you on the edge of your seat wondering exactly how long has passed in the movie, as well as exactly who the good guy or bad guy, if either even exists, is.
In all, it’s most certainly a 9/10 and is definitely worth seeing in theaters for the lighting and camera work alone.   Just remember that you’re seeing an A24 arthouse movie and that things aren’t always as they seem. Also remember to never kill a seagull, it can bring bad luck.
